Clear and straightforward book

I found the book very helpful and straightforward. There were about 6 years that I haven't used a Linux OS and as result my knowledge was quite rusty. I found the basic commands and general explanations that I was looking for; and in case you want to investigate further there is a "Deep Dive" part at the end of each chapter.
The only warning I would give about this book is that you would need some minimum OS background; if you're a complete newbie some things about it could be challenging.

About the Author

Ian Knight is the leading authority on the Anglo-Zulu War and has written over thirty highly regarded publications on Zulu history, including the award-winning National Army Museum Book of the Zulu War. knight has wriiten a long (700 pgs) detailed work that deals not only with the two battles in detail but the prelude & post periods including lives of many of the survivors from both sides; he deals with the controversies surronding the war & many of the myths generated by previous books/articles & the movies zulu dawn & zulu; he credits those from both sides who fought;died bravely as well as some who did not; i thought it was a fair/objective account & is well written for a military history; i recomend it for anyone interested in the colonial period in south africa & military history in general

I found that the narrative was often bogged down by unnecessary details regarding minor characters and inconsequential reference

This is the definitive book for historians studying this period in British/African history. However, it is not a light read. I found that the narrative was often bogged down by unnecessary details regarding minor characters and inconsequential references to too many regimental maneuvers. With respect, I found it distracting to be informed of almost every soldiers name, and unit details and family history. Be warned! It took 300 pages just to set up the first battle. Then another hundred before the actual fighting started. The book itself is 700 pages. I slogged through it because I wanted to know about these events, but I have to say, it was not a very fun read.

Real story

I read Washing of the Spears some 50 years ago and was much impressed. However with Zulu Rising a lot of the myths and falsehoods that were believed at the time of Washing of the Spears have been addressed and corrected such as the story
that it was near impossible to open the ammunition crates. I would be surprised if a better book on Isandlwana can be found.

Fabulous book that provides comprehensive information on media and youth research

Media and Youth provides a comprehensive overview of the research pertaining to media and its effect on today's youth. It is organized in a sensible fashion, first presenting general information about the pervasiveness of media and the various theoretical views on why media has an effect on children. It then launches into key research topics - such as media and body image, violence, medical uses, etc. It does a wonderful job commenting on past research while simultaneously discussing the various holes and open questions that are remaining for future research. I taught a college seminar utilizing this book, and my students reported that is was reader-friendly and provided a good overview that was a nice complement to reading empirical journal articles. I highly recommend this book for other instructors selecting a textbook on this "hot topic" of media and youth, or for anyone who wants a good picture of the current state of the research into media and youth.

One of seminal thinkers

If we had more books like this then perhaps we would be healther and the health care system would be more efficient and affordable.

Another seminal book of this sort is Why We Get Sick: The New Science of Darwinian Medicine by Randolph M. Nesse and George C. Williams.

The latter book was praised by an even greater groundbreaking thinker, Dr. Robert Ornstein, whose many works unveil for the reader how we really see the world and think about it. Look at his MindReal: How the Mind Creates Its Own Virtual Reality.

Speaking of which you might try to develop your own flexibility through the books of the British thinker and author Idries Shah, for instance in his Veiled Gazelle or Magic Monastery, which you may find in any better library or Amazon. The coming medical revolution?

My first job out of graduate school was as a consultant in Nixon's War on Cancer. My background was in quantitative policy analysis not medicine. So I and the other consultants (also chosen for their mathematical skill not their medical knowledge)began to bone up on what was known about cancer. One thing was clear - it wasn't infectious.

We were wrong then. In the seventies the conventional wisdom was that maybe one percent of all cancers were caused by some infectious agent, usually suspected to be a virus. I was part of The National Cancer Control Survey. I interviewed State Public health Officers (every state has one). Nobody ever mentioned controlling viruses or any other pathogen.

Ewald traces the changing medical opinion about cancer in the decades since. Today at least 10% of cancers are considered to have been discovered to be caused by an infection. The trend is up. He thinks that someday soon medicine will consider cancer an infectious disease like TB or peptic ulcers.

At the time "The Lady of the Camellias" (La Traviata) was written no one knew that consumption was infectious. That's why Armand (Alfredo)kisses Marguerite(Camille-Violetta)without a second thought. TB was only discovered to be infectious in the late nineteenth century. Similarly for most of my life the medical establishment considered peptic ulcers to be caused by "stress". Only recently has the bacterium that actually causes it been found.

Ewald thinks that all chronic diseases like cancer, atherosclerosis, diabetes, arthitis, and schizophrenia are also caused by some as yet unknown virus or bacterium.

I think he's right.
