Peter Kaminsky’s cookbooks include collaborations with Daniel Boulud, Michel Richard, Francis Mallmann, and Sheila Lukins. Nice addition to my bread baking skills

I received this book in the mail without knowing about the exposed spine or the black pages. I took it as kind of an artistic expression what Zachary Golper is trying to do with the bread: expose the process, and bake it dark. So it's Artie's is not a big problem for me although I think it's kind of hipsterish. i think the black polished/painted edges are cool actually, but I'm against the black recipe pages because I can't easily take notes. My cookbooks are written on all over as I try things and maybe I'll have to buy a white pen to do that here. I have made three pretty complex breads so far, probably the three most complex ones in the book: 30 hour sourdough, 60 hour sourdough and Multi grain. I think the breads have been outstanding in flavor and texture. I'm an experienced baker so it's hard for me to know how a beginner might feel about the way the recipes are written, but I found them thorough and precise. I will eventually wander into the quick bread chapter and make some of the interesting scones and biscuits, but right now I'm super happy with the results.

so far, so good!

I just received my book. It was packaged appropriately (just like every book I've ordered from Amazon). Yes, the spine is exposed. I want to bake from this book, I don't care what it looks like on my shelf. Most of the books I bake from have broken spines and are covered in flour. I'm not careless, but I buy books to use them. The recipes look interesting and the images are beautiful.

I am in no way connected to the author or publisher. I buy lots of books on Amazon and rely on reviews. I understand people questioning the spine but to me it's not a problem.

I will update after I bake!

I really like this book

I really like this book. It surprised me. Aside from being an excellent book about baking, it is a good read---entertaining stories about the chef's career and development as a baker, and the authors' quest for good bread and good food in NYC. I read it cover to cover, which I have never done with a cookbook.The insights and useful tips clearly come from someone who has acquired his skills through hands on kitchen experience working with some of the nation's best bakers and chefs. The book is also packed with astonishing photography.The publisher's choice of binding (spineless binding?) was not typical, but this isn't the first time I have seen it...same as another (Amazon offered) cookbook, Polpo, written by a Venetian restaurateur in London.

A quality, detailed and professionally-presented book!

This is a very detailed, high-quality guide dedicated to "Why Projects Fail". It is full of interesting photos, pictures and messages/principles that accompany, emphasize and illustrate each point being made, to really drive them home. Naturally there are numerous facts and statistics regarding company project success rates, including a non-exhaustive list of failed projects of some of the big brands (Nike, McDonalds, Ford, Virgin etc), and the reasons why they failed, such as cost overrun, software errors, insufficient training etc.

Even the "big boys" make mistakes, which the smaller company can learn from. The scale of the problem may be different but the principle is the same. I bought this as I needed to do some research for the company I work for, and it has certainly surpassed my expectations and given me a huge amount of insight and knowledge into this particular area.

It is full of relevant information in the 16 chapters, for example the failure rate, main elements of project failure, reasons for project failure - followed by a few chapters of specific real case studies in failed projects, how they failed and the reasons why. Chapter 16 is titled "How to prevent project failure", and is followed by a Bibliography at the very end.

This is a very impressive and professionally presented book. The quality is excellent and I highly recommend this for anyone who requires information on this subject!

Learn from mistakes of others:

I enjoyed this book because it felt new. This book covers (pretty much exhaustively) the types of risk you may encounter in any new project, in a concise and readable manner. I got this book by chance, but now intend to get more by the same author, as I like his style and the way in which he presents information. Rather than just being theoretical, this is a book which uncovers failed projects of familiar brand names of large public and private companies from all over the globe. I have found this book to be a great help when thinking around project risk and how best to audit a project. It also offers great insight around the project lifecycle and how best to ensure a smooth and successful project.

The only reason why I'm bringing this up first is because he starts the book this way. The text begins with the author saying that he's straight. He noted that many proof-readers and Two-Spirit men themselves were skeptical of that claim, but others said his sexual orientation gives gay studies legitimacy and that he'll be viewed as "objective" unlike what would be supposed of gay researchers. I am surprised that while he goes out of his way to declare his heterosexuality, he never says anything about his whiteness. Like almost all Two-Spirit books, this one was written by a Caucasian person. (Others include Walter Williams, Lester Brown, Sabine Lang, Will Roscoe, and the list goes on.) I don't know why the author feels that his sexual orientation stands out, but his race doesn't. Some Indians, of all sexualities, have said, "Don't send us your anthropologists!" I highly doubt that Two-Spirits thought nothing of his race, but only of his sexual identity. The author really needs to freshen up on books being written about whiteness and white privilege.

The most powerful impression this book left upon me is that Two-Spiritedness concerns action and not just labeling. Previously, I thought any gay person with some Native ancestry could call themselves Two-Spirit. This book, however, talks of how a legitimate Two-Spirit person would learn of their tribe's customs and dedicate themselves to helping others in the tribe. This promotion of communal action will impress Native heterosexuals, I imagine.

This book touches upon many issues that non-Native gay men and lesbians of color face. When the book mentioned that Two Spirits often care for young people that are not their biological children, I thought of something similar stated in the book "One of the Children" about gay, African-American men. When it mentioned Two Spirits that "tone it down" among Native straights, I thought of what J.L. King said in his "Up from the Down Low" about the Black community. In "Global Divas," gay Pilipino men had drag contests and spoke a slang just as these Two Spirit men did.

This book details Native homophobia, for example, when a man said, "That mess doesn't need to be thrown in our faces" and gay white racism, for example, when a gay white man says, "If I hear one more drum!" Still, there was one scene that I thought could be seen not as prejudicially as the author imagines. The author recalls a biological woman who resented a transgendered Native dancing in female competitions. However, in "Paris Is Burning," competitors squabbled over trivial things. Remember when Dorian Corey said, "Did you see that gymnast disqualified from the Olympics because her coach was within a certain distance of her? That's shade!"? This anecdote just could have been Native shade, a person trying to win at all costs.

The author writes "non-gay" rather than "straight", and "non-Indian" rather than "white" (no other people of color are ever mentioned), so one has to read carefully. Though I purchased a new book, my page 11 was smeared, I hope other readers don't get defective copies. The author never mentions any bisexual men, though Two-Spirit author Terry Tafoya once wrote that many Two Spirits are bisexual. The author notes closeted Natives, but never says whether any of these men had wives. Bisexual activists may resent this.

Geographically, most Natives leave west of the MS River, so the focus on Oklahoma and Colorado makes sense. Still, the author teaches at a Northeastern university. It would have been nice to learn about Native, gay men from that region. Any gay Oneidas in New York? Gay Naragansett in Rhode Island? This book never says. Perhaps someone else can write a book covering that topic.

"Eh" is right

This is a much needed contribution to ethnography: contemporary Native American people, and especially Native American queers, are in need of better representation, and this work fills a clear gap. I can't help but thinking, though, that this work could have been handled much better. Gilley, in most of the text, clearly conflates Two-Spiritedness and gayness. (Two Spirit seems to be the combination of "Native" and "gay," and nothing more, invisibilizing polysexual and trans* individuals who may identify as Two-Spirit.) Bi-erasure is a theme in this book: When he initially introduces one of the Two-Spirit societies he studied with, he says it consists of gay and bisexual men. Every instance thereafter, the group consistently becomes "gay men," effectively erasing any bisexual man who may have been present. Diversity is further erased as Gilley refuses to identify the importance of tribal background to Native culture, creating a generic, unified Native culture.

Again, the core content of the book gives an uncommon view of queer Native life; I just wish it had been handled a touch more delicately.

This manual on test preparation in radiology is the first of its kind, and one frantically needed as medical examination joins the digital age with the abolition of the oral boards and the corresponding well-established preparatory methods. As Aristotle was a student of Plato, who ultimately surpassed his teacher in philosophic largesse, so too shall Prometheus Lionhart, as his gift of knowledge turns to wisdom, and that wisdom to the ability to repay student loans… maybe.

Decent book in bad need of an editor

First the good. I liked the style of this book. Easy to read vernacular and colloquialisms. It's like having a classmate explain things to you in a way that you can easily understand. And it seems to cover all of the topics that are fair game on the core. So it's definitely worth a read.

The bad -- (1) it strongly relies on "buzz words", especially the "gamesmanship" chapter; I don't know if the author appreciates that the test is very different from the USMLE or "writtens" and is "image rich" and not going to ever give you a descriptive sentence full of buzz words to run with. instead they will show you the picture. So it doesn't help if you associate "punched out lytic lesion" with gout -- you need to get there from looking at a radiograph of gout. As such this book would benefit from significnt addition of images. Or you need to use it in conjunction with the Internet and look up images as you read along (which makes it a much less quick read). (2) this book needs an editor, badly. Clearly the author was in a rush to get it out in time for the next offering of the core, but there's a typo or grammatical error on virtually every page. And the author apparently doesn't know the differences between the word "effect" and "affect" -- he pretty consistently uses the wrong one, which is a bit distracting.

So basically this is a very nice first draft, but hopefully there will be a cleaned up, more "image rich" second edition on the horizon.

Wish I came across this resource sooner.

I bought this one week before the examination, but wish I had it for longer. Used in conjunction with question banks and cases, it is a great reference to organize and consolidate your thoughts. Does a great job of explaining questions correctly. It is an excellent reference and I would recommend it to anyone studying for the core.

Many typographical errors should be fixed imo - but still the best source out there.

but I enjoy the style

This is a review book. Clearly not intended to be your only resource studying for the CORE. I'm not sure why it helps me that the author calls all the silly things we need to know "trivia" or "high yield random facts", but I enjoy the style. There is a high correlation with Rad Primer questions, my other favorite study tool.

Superb book on music from Monteverdi through Bach and Handel

Although written in 1947, this book remains a very fine text on what we call the Baroque era of music. This is roughly the transition caused by the aesthetics of the Florentine Camerata at the end of the 16th century through the culmination of the late Baroque in Bach and Handel. Bach's sons and their contemporaries were the transition towards the Classic period (Gallant and Rococo).

The writing is clear with lots of helpful musical examples and illustrations. More than just a chronology or lists of dates and names, there is a great deal of focus on style that helps us understand what the people of those years said they were trying to achieve with their music and art. Bukofzer is also excellent in pointing out the differences in the aesthetics of various countries. It was not like our time where everything is broadcast at once by the media or produced in vast quantities by huge manufacturing concerns. Ideas traveled more slowly from court to court and at varying rates. Sometimes the changes happened more quickly than others. And, as always, there are differences between what the people in the sixteenth, seventeenth, and early eighteenth centuries thought was valuable and what we value two or three hundred years later.

The extensive bibliography is still valuable even if it doesn't include the huge number of valuable publications on this subject that have been published in the last fifty years. It is not that this book is outdated. What it discusses it discusses very well. However, a great deal of research and thinking about the Baroque has been done in the past twenty or thirty years and your reading and listening will have to become informed by this later work as well. Just don't miss out on this wonderful book, especially since used copies can be had so inexpensively!

A compelling discussion of Baroque musical style

More than 50 years after its publication, Professor Bukofzer's book remains as an examplar of how to discuss musical style. His revelatory insights into the origins and details of Baroque style have set standards respected and imitated by generations of scholars. Another beauty of the book is the clarity and accessibility of his ideas. Performers, amateurs, and scholars will all find many interesting ideas in this book. Some details of chronology and attribution of music have since been corrected in more recent scholarly books, but the real value of this book is in the excellent discussions of the origin of style, and Bokofzer's gift is timeless. Anyone who reads music and has an interest in Baroque music will find this book to be well-written and of immense value.
