The graph is a critical and useful concept in designing many information processing systems. Systems such as transaction processing systems, decision support systems, and workflow systems are all helped immensely by a graphical structure. Simple graphs and digraphs allow for the construction of a variety of system design tools that provide a convenient and appealing format for illustrating information infrastructures, while allowing any subsequent analyses to be performed by the user. However, the metagraph, a new graphical structure that is developed in this book, goes beyond the representational and provides Information Systems with a robust, analytical modeling graphic tool.

METAGRAPHS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS is a presentation of metagraph theory and its applications that begins by defining a metagraph and its uses. They are more complex than a simple graph structure, but they allow for representation and analysis of more complex systems. The material contained in this book is presented in two parts. The first develops the theoretical results with the emphasis on the development of a metagraph algebra. In the second part of the book, four promising applications of metagraphs are examined: 1) modeling of data relations, 2) the modeling of decision models, 3) the modeling of decision rules, and 4) the modeling of workflow tasks. Hence, the theoretical results in the initial chapters lay the foundation for the application areas in the second part of the book.

The book concludes by examining several possible extensions of this work. Of special interest is the structuring of the metagraphs modeling process, which may enhance the body of work on systems analysis and design (including software engineering), the development of a metagraphs workbench to support such a process, and the possible application of the results presented here, suitably enhanced, to social networks.

Finally, a Clearly Written, Reader-friendly Textbook!!

Organized, Concise, Relatable, Readable. Vocabulary Myths is THE model textbook. Folse's book is written in language that is "fluff-free." Two of the strongest attributes to this text is its user-friendly layout and its ability to be informative, yet concise. Each chapter is filled with useful information, reliable sources, personal experiences of the author directly related to each topic, and practical pedagogical recommendations. Most chapters are under 15 pages and the font is larger than most texts, which makes for a more enjoyable, engaging read--students will never feel "bored" or frustrated while reading the text. As a graduate student, I wish more textbooks were modeled after Folse's Vocabulary Myths. Most graduate level textbooks present chapters that are over 30 pages written in extremely formal language, and overloaded with too much information that students get "lost" in the text and ultimately have difficulty recalling crucial points of learning. Conversely, Folse's text propels students to learn and develop an interest in each "vocabulary myth" without the boredom usually associated with typical college texts. Lastly, Folse is EXTREMELY knowledgeable- having traveled, lived, and taught in many countries outside of the United States. His expertise is evident in Vocabulary Myths.

Informative, critical review of conventional wisdom about methods for teaching second language vocabulary

The author contends there are eight commonly-held beliefs about the teaching and acquisition of second language vocabulary that should be considered as "myths" rather than well-founded conclusions. The author draws on his personal experience and his evaluation of the results of research studies of second language teaching and acquisition to: (1) explain the critical importance of vocabulary learning for second language students; (2) critique each of the eight "myths" about vocabulary teaching and learning; and (3) recommend various techniques and methods for teachers to improve their vocabulary instruction.

The book is written in a readable style, and the author's contentions and arguments are fairly easy to follow and understand. The author's recommendations are specific and offer practical advice and guidance about vocabulary instruction for second language teachers. Even if the reader is not persuaded by all of the author's contentions, arguments, and conclusions, it is still a worthwhile book that offers constructive, thought-provoking ideas and suggestions that a language teacher could benefit from. I strongly recommend this book to any English as a Second Language teacher or instructor.

I’ve been looking forward to this book for some time, and Tia Louise did not disappoint! Amy and Marcus’s story is a stand alone in the One To Hold Series, and it is hot and full of twists and turns! If you’ve read the previous books you know that Amy is the little sister of Patrick and Stuart Knight, and Marcus is Elaine’s older brother.

Amy doesn’t do relationships, she doesn’t do commitment, she just does flings that don’t require feelings other than friendship and some good times in bed. Marcus is also not into commitment and relationships, so when these two are pushed back in to one another’s lives, things definitely take a turn for both of them.

This book is a little different than the other books in the series, as it’s set in Chicago, and dealing with the ins and outs of the elite society. Amy is a part of this society, but left after high school and never looked back, because of some things that had gone down. She wasn’t looking forward to being back, but wanted to be there for her mother. But Amy is thrown back into the drama of the high society, and Marcus is new to the Chicago elite, so he’s not aware of the past and why there is some tension regarding Amy.

I loved watching Marcus chase Amy even though he was adamant that he doesn’t chase and Amy start to fall for Marcus, even though she swore she didn’t do relationships. I don’t think either one of them really realized that they were chasing or falling, but it was awesome to read.

When Amy and Marcus are together, they are HOT HOT HOT! I enjoyed seeing them peel away they layers and walls they have built up, and even though both make some stupid mistakes, I loved Amy and Marcus together. Marcus is definitely hot, dominant, but has a soft spot for Amy. Amy is stubborn, funny, guarded and strong. Together these two are amazing, and reading their story was absolutely beautiful. The chemistry between these two is so hot, it will burn up your kindle!

I truly enjoyed Amy and Marcus’s story and really hope that we get to see more of them in future installments of the One To Hold series. I hope this series goes on forever as Tia Louise has a way of telling stories that never get old and always leave me wanting more!

Another favorite in this fantastic series!

‘Looking at her beautiful body naked on the bed, blindfolded, I tried to think of every way possible to blow her mind, to make her never want to run, to seal her to my side. I never expected such passion. I never expected my own response to having her that way.

Now I’m above her, holding her securely in my arms, wanting to know what’s inside her. I’ve got to find the skeleton key that will unlock her to me.’ Marcus

I loved it! This 7th installment featuring characters from the Alexander-Knight group of friends and family members is now my second favorite in the One to Hold series. I loved that Marcus was a successful sexy lawyer who also knew how to have fun and recognized that the immediate chemistry he had with Amy was worth pursuing full tilt in spite of her diehard love and leave ‘em modus operandi. It was a rather nice change of pace to have a strong female character be chased and wooed by a strong male character.

Marcus persistently showed Amy that he wouldn’t be so easily walked away from like the other men in her past had been. He had to prove to her that he wouldn’t take her “freedom” away, something that Amy witnessed her lovely mother give up first hand during her marriage.

"In life it seems you always arrive at the point where one person has to give up their freedom, has to sacrifice what they want for the other. It’s always the woman.” Amy

I loved the various ways Marcus successfully proved Amy wrong, both inside and outside the bedroom, eventually worming his way into her heart.

'He’s all I want. My heart moved to his, knit with his, and now I’m sitting here trying to figure out what comes next. I’m in unchartered waters, but the scariest part is I don’t want to run.’ Amy

Not only was One to Chase a hot as hell read, but it also had cool pop cultural references, social manners dynamics, as well as funny and heartwarming moments to round out Marcus and Amy’s love story. I always enjoy getting the updates on couples from the previous novels. And of course, no One to Hold novel would be complete without a juicy epilogue.

Up next in this fantastic series is a return to Stuart and Mariska in One to Take (One to Hold # 8) available in the Fall of 2015.

Hot sexy and begging for more

Hot and Super Sexy!!!!!!! Tia once again has brought her readers a well written story that is fun, exciting with heart touching moments. I love this series and One to Chase is no exception! Marcus and Amy know how to steam up the windows with their passion. They have a one night hook up at Derek and Mel’s wedding- not exchanging full names- and definitely never expecting to see each other again.

Marcus Merritt, Elaine’s older brother, the hot-shot lawyer who represented Derek when he was arrested for murder. Marcus is gorgeous, rich and a confirmed bachelor who is not willing to settle down. He also is on top of the social anarchy which is why Elaine request him help introduce Amy to some of his business associates.

Amy Knight, is the younger sister of Stuart and Patrick Knight just moved back in order to spend more time with her mom. She is independent and reluctant to agree to the meeting. Amy doesn’t want to hurt her new sister in law feelings to she takes the meeting.

Marcus and Elaine believe this is their first meeting, when their eyes meet- they are both stunned when they realize it is not the first time they met.
Marcus and Amy meet once before- at a mutual friend’s wedding- where they hooked up for a one night stand.

Marcus does not chase and Amy does not do relationship- but they cannot get enough of each other. Amy holds secrets from her past and Marcus has a secret from the present- can they get passed them and have something special?

One to Chase is seventh book by Tia Louise- They can be read as a Stand Alone or as a series. Each one gets better. Every story is new and fresh- the characters grow but remain true to their original introduction to the series. I cannot wait until Tia goes back to the writing cave giving us more of her hot men.

This book has a very practical approach to RPD construction. The many illustrations make the subject extremely comprehensible. It makes a good reference in dentist's professional library and very helpful to new graduates.

Great illustrations with clear labels, point-form summaries. Amazing review for exams/ boards. Very comprehensive and very readable. Some designs look a little esoteric but still very useful. Wish I had it when I was in dental school.

About the Author
Stephen Cole liked books, and so went to the University of East Anglia to read more of them. Later on he started writing them too, with more TV and film tie-ins than he cares to admit to along the way. He has been the voice of a Dalek and an editor of fiction and non-fiction book titles for various publishers, including the Doctor Who novels The Feast of the Drowned and The Art of Destruction.

A very intriguing "New" version of the Doctor

While I was always aware of Doctor Who having started in the 1960's, because of when I was born, I only got into Doctor Who from Peter Davison's era onwards. I've never watched any episode of the first two doctor's, and only a handful from the third one. In fact, my idea of the Doctor is really the current "modern" revamped one, the one who is the last living free Time Lord who had to vanquish both the Daleks and his own race, the one who knows so much, has experienced so much, and is always on the side of good.

Thus Ten Little Aliens was unsettling for me.

I saw a Doctor who, because of his young age, was a little uncertain, did not instantly have all the answers and know everything. In fact, sometimes it seemed as if Ben was the one who was more solid, more courageous, who was looking for answers. I saw a Doctor whose character, along with that of his companions, was obviously a product of the 1960's.

I saw a Doctor who was in his first "life", with a young Time Lord brain, but physically old body. This is totally different to his subsequent regeneration incarnations. He's also less eccentric.

Ten Little ALiens was also interesting because it starts off being a totally different novel, focusing on the military squad who eventually become stranded with the Doctor. In fact, I had to go back to my contents page to make sure I was, indeed, reading Doctor Who, and not one of my other sci fi books. It was quite disorientating to have a novel concentrating not on the Doctor, but a group of totally unrelated people, and then when they subsequently meet, encounter a Doctor who is so different from any other I'd seen or read about before.

Assuming the first Doctor's character has been faithfully reproduced, this novel has been a very interesting eye opener for me, and I suspect would be a novelty for any Doctor Who fan who has only seen the modern Doctors.

And then there was one...

Ten Little Aliens is a sci-fi mystery set in the DR. WHO universe. The main characters, besides ten human soldiers and ten dead aliens is the First Doctor with Ben and Polly. If you read my review of Stephen Cole's To The Slaughter you will know why I grabbed this book. My two problems with To The Slaughter was its speed was more fitting of a mystery novel then a thriller and its style was more fitting of the First Doctor's and Second Doctor's stories than the Eighth Doctor, who to be honest I am not a fan of and think he is an underdeveloped character.

And here is a story of the First Doctor with a mystery on his hands. A perfect novel for Stephen Cole's style. If you have glanced at the other reviews you know about the Choose-Your-Own-Adventure set up near the end of the book, which I think is a great idea, and also know that the book may seem slow at the start. Well, the First Act of any mystery story has to cover a lot of ground when you have so many characters. That can't be helped. You have to give the reader hope, no matter how slim, of figuring out who the bad guy is before you reveal it in the end.

I even enjoyed the A-T E-Zine which allowed us to know the backgrounds of all the soldiers in the unit. Mr. Cole put a lot of time and polished ideas into the story and I say - Well Done!

Is this the best First Doctor story they could put forward for the 50th Anniversary?

This is a very dark and violent story for Doctor Who; a retelling of Agatha Christie's Ten Little Indians. It's too dark and gory for the telly, but that's one of the benefits of having a book format, so these sorts of stories can be told.

Stephen Cole captures the First Doctor very well, and probably captures Polly and Ben about 90% or so. But the soldiers they encounter are too numerous and not enough time is spent on them for any of them to truly be developed in any way. You feel no sympathy for them.

And while it was overall written rather well, two things detracted from the overall grade and were each worth a star. The first was a glaring language issue. All of the characters used me in the nominative. And this got very old quickly. It became a glaring shibboleth that they were all written by one man.

The second glaring issue was a sort of choose your own adventure chapter. The idea is that all of the minds are linked together and you can choose which perspective to view. It's a novel idea that had potential, but I quickly grew quite annoyed with it.

I wonder if they couldn't find a better First Doctor story to do for the 50th Anniversary.

Flints plain and folksy verse stays true to its humble intentions: in short-line forms, ballads, odes, and elegies, he records moments of joy. Take the Moment: Thursday Aubade remembers a lyrical time in Perugia, on his wedding anniversary, with a worker singing outside; in Windfall from Edna Millay, hes amazed by an actual windfall of apples in a field; Strawberries like Raspberries describes the wonderful fruit of economically depressed Bulgaria; and Henry & June the Movie defends the sexiness of its female leads against criticism. Sex is often a laughing matter for Flint: Never Again Would Birdsong is a ditty about the link between laughter and orgasm, which Flint expounds upon at length in HaHa, a poem that plays on the Old English roots of the word laugh. Raised in the austere Midwest, Flint recalls his mothers difficult life in a few poems; and maintains a simple faith (And it was good) and a belief in the virtues of labor (Do You Have an Extra Saw). His ode to friendship (Pamela) is further supported by his own elegies for Tom, with whom he shared the ordinary passages of time. About the Author

The author of six previous books of poetry, Roland Flint was appointed Poet Laureate of Maryland in 1995. He has been awarded many resident fellowships at retreats for artists, most recently at Yaddo. He taught literature and writing at Georgetown University for thirty years.

An exuberant, finely wrought lexicon of laughter & grief

EASY is acclaimed poet Roland Flint's 7th book, and in a career marked by the rare marriage of multiplicity of style with knuckle-busting consistency of vision, this may be his most compelling collection to date. A native of North Dakota, Flint's plainspoken, masterful eloquence informs line after line, carefully measuring the liveliest, smartest, most sensual poetry of our day. He is more than partial to a laugh (see "Monkey House," "Land of Cotton," "Ah, Venus," "HaHa") -- he's stubbornly bent on laughter. His work possesses the cleverness of Roethke, the lyric, ingrained sensitivity to rhythm and occasional rhyme of Wright, the psychodynamic jazz of Matthews, the hard irony of Berryman. And that's merely the beginning. What stands out in poem after poem is the compassionately rendered, unsparing clarity of emotion -- whether of hilarity or piercing loss or both at once -- that without the poem had gone unnoticed, unrescued, unpraised, unredeemed. Take his characteristically precise and moving "Strawberries Like Raspberries," in which the poet recalls a trip to Bulgaria, where he tasted "the genius/ or luck of Bulgarian horticulture," especially in the country's strawberries -- "small, a delicately sweet dark red." He's learned just enough Bulgarian, from a communist text, to misconstrue -- for the varietal name of the fruit itself -- a local friend's comparing these strawberries with raspberries. Later, back in the states, the poet reads of the transition (or translation) from communism to capitalism, of the saddening kinks in the new food distribution chain, regretting all that wasted genius, and concludes: "... for a while, at least,/ the harvest will be only of fruit -- / bitterer than sour cherries --/ of what had been more deeply sown." EASY is replete with such poetry of harvest: in "Little Men Who Come Blindly," fathers reap what they've sown in their children; in "Seasonal, 1991," early spring in Bagdhad, following the Gulf War, brings from military triumph the mortal grief in "a season of heat and winds/ of cholera and typhus;" in "Pamela," adolescent love bears the fruit of enduring loyalty. These are poems ripe with their moments, coming off the page easily, of their own weight. Flint's earthy versatility calls to mind a maple on the plains in October, whose lower limbs still are green, whose middle branches are yellow, and whose upper leaves are orange-red: a single figure for loss, austerity, and an abundance of bright-hard laughter. EASY is a collection you will respect, and thoroughly enjoy in each of its many facets. Roland Flint will make you smarter at heart.

Joy Rediscovered

I have never been able to say this about any other book: I enjoyed EASY so much that I read it through twice in one sitting. Roland Flint is a writer of great heart who has suffused each of the thirty-seven poems in his new collection with quiet beauty. It is hard not to feel grateful after reading these poems, and most people will most likely also be more aware of the pleasures they take in daily life, the ones they might not readily recognize. In one of the poems in the book's third section, "Strawberries Like Raspberries," Flint describes the delight of eating a perfect pear in such clear detail that I immediately thought of a pear I had recently eaten and wished for another. Flint's language is always lucid, his lines and stanzas crisp like fall leaves, and there is sometimes an autumnal melancholy to his poems, e.g. "After the Spanish Mass with Nena," "Pamela," "Grief November," "Prayer." Others, however, are more celebratory: "Never Again Would Birdsong" and "HaHa" examine the link between laughter and sex, revealing that the two are often closely related. Still others amuse with anecdotes or mild wordplay: "Henry & June the Movie" and "Land of Cotton." This is a collection in which readers will rediscover joy. Praised be Roland Flint! Praised be!

Good book!

This was an interesting book. It took a while to really understand the world the kids were living in, but once you're in, you are definitely in. The concept of everyone dying off at 17 is one that I thoroughly enjoy and the story moved along at a good clip, with lots of interesting events happening. Definitely recommend it.

I've given several four and five-star reviews lately, but the reason is because I've been very particular about what I choose to read. I found the blurb for Chris Von Halle's novel, The Fourth Generation, interesting, but I actually had no intention of reading the book. Then fate stepped in and I won a copy in one of his giveaways. Well, alllll righty, then, I guess I will just have to read the first few pages to see how it goes, then put it on my TBR pile, right below the six other books I *must* read on a deadline.

It was a good thought. 5:00 the next morning, I finished the book and started this review. Yes, I still have six other books that have DEADLINES on them, but The Fourth Generation was worth the quick detour. In the distant future, children live to be roughly seventeen years old before they die from the plague, a horrible, irreversible illness that has afflicted Earth for generations. It's simply the way things are. Or is it? Is the plague natural, or part of a more sinister, underlying plan?

The plot, characterization and especially world-building are very tight in this book, at least for the first three-quarters until the climactic scenes. Even at the end, the writing is tight; however, there is the strong sense that either the writer rushed the ending, making it somewhat 'pat' or clich�d, or that he suddenly remembered he was writing Young Adult fiction and couldn't write as intense or realistic a scene as was called for. Either way, the climax was slightly anticlimactic – at least for an adult reader.

I'm certain, though, kids 12 to 16 years of age will LOVE this book and will find none of the imperfections I noticed. As an adult reader, I would give this book four stars simply for its entertainment and "ok-just-one-more-paragraph" value. However, if I take the target audience into consideration (which one must ALWAYS do when reviewing, I believe), then the novel is clearly a five star read for Young Adults!

Fortunately, now that I know how this book ended, I can get back to WORK … unless there's a sequel coming out anytime soon?

A brave, new world, as bleak as Huxley's, but modernized to current concerns makes this a must read!

I loved this book. It's bleak setting and the harsh reality of the powers that be creating a stark reality for the common people give the story a chilling reality; almost hopeless existence for the underdogs, while the wealthy experience comfort and ease...a blatant disharmonious society where the majority are subject to cruel death at seventeen, never to live to see their children, no hope for a better, fairer life; it's all very dark, until the heroes risk all to challenge those in power. It's a powerful message of a world that could be, a reminder to be alert and apprehensive of false gods and empty promises.

The heroes stay real, come to believable conclusions that speak of hope and redemption, this book caught my attention from the first words. I highly recemmend it.

divided - some good advice but not a good book.

I am so divided on this book. On one hand, I like the philosophy and it has given me a whole new view on my toddler. I now realize he is no longer a baby and I need to give him more independence, like letting him try to put on his own clothes, or giving him tasks like asking him to put things away. In many ways, it has made me stop and think about my reactions to his natural explorations - and I've been able to change my reaction or use a more effective tactic to redirect him.

Similar to The Happiest Toddler on the Block: How to Eliminate Tantrums and Raise a Patient, Respectful, and Cooperative One- to Four-Year-Old: Revised Edition, it has the philosophy that you will not need punitive time-outs (or other punishments) if you work with the toddlers' nature. If you give your child the attention they need, as well as plan ahead for difficult situations like visits to a jewelry store (to give one example from the book), and understand their natural inclinations and development stages, you can avoid many discipline problems. It was great to understand that "No, don't touch that." is completely ineffective; I've stopped interacting that way with my 18 month son. Now, I instead say "could you give that to mommy?" and he does.

But the authors make the mistake of explaining every good technique with a bad example. In other words, I am forced to read sad stories of misguided parents, children who are spanked for asking questions, kids in bad childcare, and what ill effects it has on the kids. It makes me sad, depressed, and in the case of timeouts, which my pediatrician told me to try, now I feel guilty for scarring my poor kid for life with my timeouts!

Also, nary an assertion is made that has a footnote. No, these folks don't like to reference any actual studies that one could look up and learn more about. Lame. In particular, there was a section on how there is a narrow window to wean your child from breastfeeding, before it becomes "habit". Great, now my kid is a breastfeeding addict. I guess it's better than drugs. I couldn't find any evidence of this anywhere - where is the proof of this supposed "weaning" window?

I've read actual scholarly books on the effect of TV on children, but they (wrongly in my opinion) did not reference the people who did these studies, as they should have. It's called proper citation and you're supposed to give the credit to the researchers and writers who come before you.

another part that killed me - you're not supposed to let your kid see you working at a computer. If you work from home, it said, try not to let your child see you spending so much time in front of a screen. Excuse me? I'm a professional IT project manager and I do use a computer for work, as do the developers I work with. It's a great career. I'm supposed to be ashamed of it and hide it from my kids? Why? I'd love it if they grew up and used a computer someday - it's good clean work! I mean, we can take our kids to see the firefighters and the police, but we can't let them see that people work with computers? B.S. All "screens" were lumped into the same category. I agree that I do not play violent video games in front of my kid and the only tv show we watch once per week, we watch (and discuss) together. But I don't consider my cellphone and my computer to be evil and things that I need to hide from my kid. When I read that chapter, I really started to lose it and didn't want to finish.

I loved the final chapter and it gave me a much more positive spin. It was all about appreciating these little moments from babyhood through toddlerhood. I also appreciated their support of childcare, and how to find a good childcare situation - all too often, parenting books that otherwise resonate me will put down childcare or assume that I am a full-time parent. (During babyhood, I was more into attachment parenting but I had to make serious adjustments considering that I was a working mom.)

In the end, Dr. Karpp's Happiest Toddler book is a much better read on the same topic. It's more lighthearted and won't pull at your heartstrings with sad stories or prick you with the guilt pitchfork.

Good book gets better after recent update

I am a fan of positive discipline, but I do nurse my toddler and we co-sleep. So I was a bit apprehensive when I read some of the other reviews. I had read the older edition from the library and agree with posters on that edition. However, they have come out with a newer edition. Even though I thought it was pretty plain to see that they do not endorse extended nursing nor co-sleeping, they say some families choose to do and provide references if you choose to do it. And no pics of bottles, that I noticed, at least!
