Really helpful for detoxing

I debated whether or not to purchase this book after reading a review on here saying that it was very basic knowledge on detoxing. I'm by no means a detox expert, but I do consider myself someone that is decently educated on the topic. Because of that review, I kinda debated downloading it for awhile and read a few other books..but was intuitively pulled back to it. I'm so glad I was! This is a very comprehensive guide to a lot of the essential oils, supplements, etc...infused with spiritual concepts and prayers that were REALLY helpful. I think this handbook would be very useful for the average person who hasn't extensively studied detoxing. I don't think it was written for someone who's already naturopath practitioner or anything..you probably won't find any new information that you don't already know. But...I am a spiritual weight loss coach and found tons of helpful information in here. If you're looking for a guidebook to take you through detoxing with a spiritual approach...this is a great place to start :)

Healing methods are introduced that are simple, and safe. The reader is guided on a healing journey, by letting go of anything that no longer serves you. The end results are rewards, and happiness. In addition, the authors discuss how to stay happy, and secure, through the ability to also help others. There is information on what to expect from a detox, letting go of unhealthy lifestyle habits, the life force of food, and more. There is also material on A Naturopathic Perspective; Diet & Lifestyle; How Often We Should detox; Healing Methods; Addiction; and The Purpose Of Healing crystals.

The importance of Mother Nature, Outdoors, and Sunlight is discussed. Information is presented on the Red Flag alert when digestion is in trouble, Food Allergies, The Importance of Water, and the disadvantages of Fluoride. Very worth your time!

I have to admit that this is the first Doreen Virtue book I’ve read. I received the book for free from Hay House Publishing in exchange for writing a review. This review is solely my own opinion.
This title intrigued me because I thought it would compliment my ongoing experiment in writing to my cerebral palsy and further my studies in the mind-body connection. Plus, I am in the midst of a 28 day clean eating program, so I had already begun much of the herbal support and food elimination that is suggested in the book.
I suspended my skepticism about working with angels and dove in. The book is well organized and thought out. It contains prayers to God and the angels to emotionally and physically cleanse body and mind, along with detailed suggestions for flower, crystal and herbal therapies. Virtue suggests journaling thoughts, feelings and questions and consulting the angels about any concerns. She also suggests asking the angels to guide food choices and steer the reader away from allergens.
I have not worked with all of the prayers and therapies, but I have done some journaling and eliminated sugar, coffee and the top allergens (gluten, dairy, soy, corn, eggs and peanuts.) I know from medical tests that I am gluten and lactose intolerant. I am impressed with the authors’ emphasis on physical healing. There are chapters devoted to dairy, gluten, coffee, sugar, smoking and alcohol detox, as well as detox from other addictions. Each chapter walks the reader through a seven day cleanse with detailed steps and prayers for each day.
I remained skeptical about the angels until I did a cord cutting meditation with Archangel Michael. I settled into a quiet space and asked Michael to remove any cords of fear and negative energies from my body. I felt and could see in my mind’s eye dense negative energy in my lower abdomen and low back. I did my best to stay non-judgmental of the experience. When I felt that the cords had been released, I thanked Archangel Michael and came out of the meditation feeling lighter and clearer.
I think ultimately, it does not matter if you believe that the angels are separate entities, or a way to access your own inner wisdom. The book helped me remember that I can ask for help from and be supported by the universe. That reminder alone makes the book well worth your time.

Welcome to Wareville

Wareville is an unique little town where magic , “witches, goblins, and ghouls are money in the townspeople’s pockets.” It is also where a nifty witch named Foxxy (Harper) Beck owns the Funky Wheel, a psychedelic roller rink. Inheriting the rink from her deceased father was the best thing that had ever happen to Foxxy, that is until she discovers the dead body of her accountant taped to the floor of the rink. It was pretty obvious that a practitioner of the occult was the murderer. Unfortunately, the hunky detective in charge of the case, (Detective Wyatt Bennett) is convince he has enough evidence to arrest Jeb (Foxxy's close friend and employee ) for the murder,.

There is no way Foxxy is going to let her friend Jeb rot in jail for a crime she is sure he did not commit. With the help of her best friend Paul, her spooky witch grandmother and the very reluctant detective Bennett (soon to be her new boyfriend), she sets out to find the real murderer. However, there a lot of twists and turns before the hidden murderer is finally revealed

This was a great story and I am definitely look forward to the next book in this series. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good paranormal romantic mystery.

"Roller Rink Witchcraft" by Raven Snow is the first Novella in the "Foxxy Witch" Series. Harper, also known as Foxy, is the owner of a rollerskating rink in the middle of the small town known as Waresville. At twenty six, she's lost both her mother and the father she never knew. But thanks to her father, he left her his roller rink. Her grandmother, the proud owner of a witch supply store, is her only family. The two have a trying relationship. Harper is trying to be patient with her grandmother and her grandmother is trying to get on her nerves. But since they are family, they tolerate each other.

Harper's world is turned upside down once again when she enters to the roller rink to open for the afternoon only to find the dead body of her accountant in the middle of the rink. Her bouncer is arrested for the crime. Can Harper clear his name before she become the next victim to this murder's black magic?

Overall, I enjoyed this novella. I'm glad that it was combined into one addition. Nothing is more frustrating than getting into a story to only find out that half of it is published for free while the other half is for sale. The characters are amusing, and the plot flows at a good pace.

Potential for a great witch series

This light novella, has the potential to be a great series. It's packed with 70's grooviness, witty witches, adorable weird children (like myself), a budding romance, and a town that I would give everything to live in.

This 70ish page read is packed with a mix of everything, and is a fast, fun read. Some parts of the story were a bit rushed, and I would have liked to got to know the characters, town, and the groovy rink a bit more. The setting is definitely unique, and adds a fun new twist to witchy paranormal romance novels The skating rink, with the cute town, the interaction between the characters is simply magical.

I can not wait to read further adventures of Foxxy, as I enjoyed her character. She is a vibrant oddball, that has some funny comebacks, and just adore her attitude. I hope that future novels will be longer, and have her explore more of her witchy heritage. Gran seems like she is hiding something, and I hope it's some magical twist.

Definitely recommend this to anyone that wants a fast fun read, loves witches, supernatural towns, and paranormal romance.

About the Author
Kate is a Mechanical Engineer with almost 20 years of experience using ANSYS for engineering design and analysis in academia and industry. Kate specializes in finite element modeling of micro scale surface phenomena, new product development, design for manufacturing, engineering design theory and methodology, and engineering design education and assessment. She taught ANSYS and finite element analysis at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and has held engineering faculty positions at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). She earned her S.B., S.M., and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

John is a Mechanical Engineer with almost 50 years of experience using the finite element method for engineering analysis. From 1967 to 1971, he worked with special purpose finite element programs at the Westinghouse Electric Corporation. He switched to general purpose finite element programs with the initial release of ANSYS in 1971. John served as a consultant to the ANSYS Headquarters Technical Support Group for 20 years where he specialized in nonlinear material models, APDL, User Programmable Features, specialty applications, and other non-standard uses and customizations of the program. He has used ANSYS as a consulting engineer to support Fortune 500 companies and has taught ANSYS and finite element analysis at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Korea Advanced Institute of Technology (KAIST). John is currently a Professor of Industrial and Engineering Technology and a registered Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He earned his B.S.M.E., M.S.M.E., and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh.

Lorraine Farrelly is Deputy Head of the Portsmouth School of Architecture. Her studio teaching focuses in particular on the promotion of a mixture of freehand and computer drawing skills to encourage a range of approaches to architectural drawing and representation. Her previous books include Interior Structures: Bars and Restaurants (2003), Representational Techniques, and Fundamentals of Architecture (both 2007).

Nice to look at, annoying to read

This book presents a great variety of examples of ways to represent the city. However, I'm only on chapter two (which I was assigned to "read") and the text is mind-boggling. The paragraphs seem to be in completely random order. Here are the topics of five consecutive paragraphs, each only 2-3 sentences long:
1. Sketches can be drawn from different viewpoints and you can include plans or sections.
2. You should study the context of the urban environment (nothing about how this relates to drawings).
3. You can draw different spaces in the city and compare them.
4. You can use different media for different effects.
5. You can write notes on the drawing (this was stated three pages ago, and the graphic examples were four pages ago and are not referenced here).
The book repeats itself and sometimes it is not apparent how the text relates to the attendant drawings. It reminds me of when I used to review people's papers when I was an undergrad, and they were completely baffled when I asked them to make an outline of what they wrote.
Do not buy this book if you like coherence or plan on actually reading the text.

About the Author

Bernhard Hennen was born in Krefeld, Germany. He studied archaeology, history, and German studies at Cologne University, and he traveled extensively while working as a journalist. With Wolfgang Hohlbein, Hennen published his first novel, Das Jahr des Greifen, in 1994. Since then, his name has appeared on dozens of historical and fantasy novels as well as numerous short stories. Hennen has also developed the storyline for a computer game, and he has worked as a swordsman for hire in medieval shows and as a Santa Claus mercenary. In 2000, the author returned to the city of his birth and lives there with his wife and children.

James A. Sullivan was born in 1974 in West Point, New York, and grew up in Germany. During his studies in Cologne, he, together with Bernhard Hennen, became involved in the adventure of writing The Elven. He continues this work, following Nuramon in a novel focused on the tragic fate of one of the most popular figures of German fantasy.

Fantastic! Enthralling! Easily one of the best fantasy novels I've ever had the pleasure of reading.

I've been wracking my brain for the past day or so, struggling to find the best way to articulate my thoughts on "The Elven." I've found little success: "The Elven" somehow manages to tell a story both both familiar and refreshing. It can often be difficult to fully express the quality of a novel--the adjectives that come most easily seldom confer nearly so much meaning as they ought to.

I first discovered "The Elven" entirely by happenstance. I was aching for a good book to read, and the discounted price on Amazon--along with the discounted price of the eBook--convinced me to give Hennen's story a shot, even though it had only one user review on Amazon.com. Cursory research revealed the Bernhard Hennen is a fairly prolific Fantasy author in German, whose works have been translated into many different languages. This unfortunately-titled novel, "The Elven," is (more unfortunately) the first of his stories to be translated in English. Hennen has approximately 17 books available on Kindle on Amazon.de, all of which are rated very highly--the majority scoring a 4.5/5 review average (including "The Elven," which has reviews from more than 400 users). The reviews for the "Elven" series were particularly glowing. I took the liberty of translating a bit from the two most helpful German reviews:

The most helpful positive review, by "Martin H." (5/5) declares the book to be harmonious, fascinating, thrilling, sad and vivid. The first three novels form a trilogy of sorts, but each stands alone as a complete story. He states, "The world and characters are vividly and lovingly described so that the reader is immediately immersed into the world of the Elfs. Everything is written with a great deal of detail that never feels too wordy or fails to hold the readers attention." He also states that the story manages at times to be dramatic or melancholy without ever feeling contrived or cheesy.

Conversely, the most helpful critical review, by "Media-Mania" (3/5) declares the book to be a very good read, but "brutally" short. This first novel is a complex book that tells a "marvelously intense story," with a great deal of suspense, action, mystery and magic, as well as a great deal of humor. He/she/they declare it to be "A true adventure story and a master work." The review has nothing but praise for the novel itself, but instead criticizes the (German) audiobook adaptation, which apparently lost much of the content from the novel.

So: now that I've read the book myself, what do I think?

It's fantastic. Possibly even a little sublime. The Elven is very much written directly in the mold of the old Norse sagas. At first glance, that may seem to be a mark against the novel. After all, is there any setting more cliched in fantasy than the Norse-inspired mythic realm? Elves, Dwarves, Trolls and lots of hearty men with stout Scandinavian names, epic beards, and double-headed axes?

But where most Fantasy authors conjure their settings through the lens of Tolkien (whose own work was a lens through which to view the old Sagas), Hennen ignores Tolkien and emulates the source itself. So, despite the many similiarities to Tolkien's masterpiece, "The Elven" feels more like a parallel work than a derivative one.

I guess my "review" is getting pretty long, huh? I'm sorry about that. I really want to "sell" this book to everyone out there, but at the same time I don't want to rob any enjoyment of the story by spoiling anything, no matter how minor. The story of "The Elven" has humor, but treats its plot and characters seriously--with respect. The central conceit of the novel is lifted directly from some of my favorite myths and fairytales. To get from one point or another, the characters travel by means of magical portals--portals which are not altogether reliable, and have a bad habit of dumping our heroes out at their destination far later than they'd expect. This allows the story to be focused and personal, while still managing to fill out a truly epic, historical scale spanning centuries.

And, covering entire generations as it does, the novel is able to constantly provide each scene--each moment--with genuine tension. Because people do die, and the world does change, and if there's one clear and obvious theme to Hennen's story, it's that everyone is at Time's mercy. In other words, it's impossible to be certain in the safety or success of any one character, because their trials and triumphs are presented at a historic scale. This transforms the "draw" of the story from seeing what the characters do to, instead, seeing why and how they do the things they do.

What makes the story of "The Elven" truly memorable is the pacing. The "time travel" conceit allows the tale to be neatly divided into small chunks--each like a self-contained story that is connected to both the preceding and succeeding tales, but also enthralling in its own right. Rather than a single novel, "The Elven" feels like a collection of heroic stories tied together more by the characters involved than the machinations of the overreaching plot. None of the scenes feel wasted, and nothing at all feels superfluous (which, I now realize, is praise I can confer upon preceious few books, fiction or otherwise). The prose itself is--and I cannot stress this enough--magnificent.

I wish I could discuss the quality of the translation, and maybe someday in the future I will. What I can say, having learned German myself solely to read Herman Hesse's stories in their original tongue, is that translating German to English is a very difficult task. And while I cannot yet comment on the accuracy of Edwin Miles' translation, I CAN comment on its overall quality. The prose... is simply fantastic. The writing conveys action, humor and beauty quite deftly. So deftly that, if I did not know better, I would never have suspected this to be a translation at all. Miles clearly put sufficent effort into his translation to make it appear effortless. If more of Hennen's books are to be translated into English (and I very much hope they are), I hope they are translated even half so well.

The great story-THE SLOPPY END.......

I would have preferred to have given this a 5 star, but I was so let down by the ending, I just could not do it. The whole book had me mesmerized, so involved. This book was truly a piece of literary art, I couldn't put it down to do anything so mundane such as cleaning or making meals!!! And after all the work that was so obviously, so heartfelt put into it, it finished like a rush job to get rid if it and be done....I wanted to yell to Mr. Hennen=HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME???!!!!

A Great Saga

I really enjoyed the epic sweep of this story, spanning generations and centuries. The saga draws from primarily Germanic mythology, and fits well within that body of literature. I'm reminded of Tolkien's statement "[I] set myself a task, the arrogance of which I fully recognized and trembled at: being precisely to restore to the English an epic tradition and present them with a mythology of their own." Few modern stories I've read can comfortably claim to stand in that tradition, but I felt The Elven" was among those few.

The story starts with Mandred, the chieftain or jarl of a northern village, and his effort to save his home and family from the ravages of a Man-Boar which has arrived nearby. That leads to to his encounter with the eleven people and a centuries long companionship with two elves in particular - Nuramon and Farodin.

There are a variety of heroic themes in the story as well:

* Choices, sacrifices, and responsibilities of leadership
* Conflict between role of father as protector and as nurturer
* Loyalty between friends and comrades
* Spite, forgiveness, and common-cause

What the story avoided, to its credit I think, was a quest for the single magical trinket that would save the day. Although the characters were not developed in the same way that they might be in a modern soul-searching novel, this is primarily a story about people and the challenges of the quest.

this is a unique,thorough. and entertaining-yet-serious description of how we should all treat others..... NOT an instruction book, nor a book of rules.....simply how to show respect to our fellow human beings. The hardback edition is much easier on the eyes than the softcover/paperback edition.

Short and sweet. For anyone who loves to get a hand-written thank you note, a birthday card in the mail, or the perfect gift just because-this book is for you. Donald McCullough first is a magical writter, and second a wise and kind teacher.
We need to get back to the nature of caring and doing the little things that make human life special. Saying please and thank you are such fundimental human feelings, the loss of these words in our language will no doubt be the loss of the very threads that help to create the weaving which is the nicer side of our human family.
The gift for all ocassions (I purchased 20 of them!) and a great place to start with the kids. Help us keep the sweetness of human kindness alive, read and enjoy "Say Please, Say Thank You...!

I wish I could drop millions of copies of this book from the sky. It should be required reading by every human being. Has the author been on Oprah? Larry King? Good Morning America? Today? Rosie? How about a PBS special? If so, I'm sorry I missed those segments. If not, then where's his publicist? Can we get rid of Dr. Laura and replace her with Donald McCullough?
It would be such a lovely world if we were all to get back to the basics of mutual respect and consideration. There would be a lot less stress in today's world if everyone followed the very simple principles in this book.
Buy it, read it, share it, and most importantly, DO IT. You'll stand out among the herd--that's for sure.

Gruen traces this pattern of adaptation and smoldering rebellion through a number of case studies, sociological phenomena - from Nazism to Reaganomics - and literary works. The insanity this attitude produces, unfortunately, goes widely unrecognized precisely because it has become the "realism" that modern society inculcates into its members. Gruen warns, however, that escape from this pattern lies not simply in rebellion, for the rebel remains emotionally tied to the object of his rebellion, but in the development of a personal autonomy. His elegant and far-reaching conclusion is that while autonomy is not easily attained, its absence proves catastrophic to both individual and society. "With compassion and conviction Dr. Gruen carefully exposes the undiagnosed and undisclosed insanity unwittingly accepted as normality... According to Sigmund Freud, man is born with an innate tendency to destruction and violence; in The Insanity of Normality, the psychoanalyst Arno Gruen challenges that assumption, arguing instead that at the root of evil lies self-hatred, a rage originating in a self-betrayal that begins in childhood, when autonomy is surrendered in exchange for the "love" of those who wield power over us. To share in that subjugating power, we create a false self, an image of ourselves that springs from a powerful and deep-seated sense of fear. Gruen traces this pattern of adaptation and smoldering rebellion through a number of case studies, sociological phenomena--from Nazism to Reaganomics--and literary worlds. The insanity this attitude produces, unfortunately, goes widely unrecognized precisely because it has become the "realism" that modern society inculcates into its members. Gruen warns, however, that escape from this pattern lies not simply in rebellion, for the rebel remains emotionally tied to the object of his rebellion, but in the development of a personal autonomy. His elegant and far-reaching conclusion is that while autonomy is not easily attained, its absence proves catastrophic to both individual and society.

Rich and clarifying. 20th century intellectual must-read. Right up there with essentials like Alice Miller and Ernst Becker. As a practicing psychotherapist, this elucidates applicable substance of psychoanalytic theory. Indispensable. Essential. (And to think i got to it via a back page ad in NYRB).
