A step down from the 1st edition...

I've used this textbook in both the first and second edition, but have decided that I won't use it again.

I generally liked the first edition, but this second edition was inferior. First, the CD-ROM with the primary readings has been made more difficult to use. Many of the entries no longer open a text box on the screen but take you to a website with numerous options, making the precise reading assignments difficult to find unless you want to assign the whole text of something really long. Besides, if all these primary sources are already on the internet, why should we all pay extra to buy the CD-ROM?

Second, the book is organized in a confusing way. As someone who likes to teach the development of Western philosophy from Ancient Greece until today, there was no straightforward way to teach this. You have to jump around topic to topic. (OK, I acknowledge that some people like the topical approach so maybe this is just a personal perference)

Third, it is pretty obvious from reading the book which views the author prefers. I consider this to be inappropriate in an intro level book.

So, while there are some good things about the book such as its attempted breadth, I'll be using something else next time.

A Fun Read...

The 2nd Edition is riddled with typos, about one every two pages. This is annoying because they tend to appear right in a sentence where the author is driving home a point or asking a critical question.

Aside from that, it's a fun read, but some sections are far beyond the reading comprehension of beginning college students. At times, the author makes better sense of a long passage with his remarks and synthesis, while the context of the excerpts sometimes just do not come together.

I have to commend the author for picking some "choice" images for the margins to keep a sleepy reader alert. These include: the gradation of skin color changes over Michael Jackson's career span, death photos of Malcolm X, people picking through garbage, planes flying into the twin towers, etc.. I get the sense that the author is a cynical yet intelligent man, which is why the book works for me regardless of typos and small context issues.

Decent but not a great read

I read this for enjoyment, not for a class. I found the topics suited to an entry-level philosophy student, but for this purpose it does a good job of explaining the central viewpoints from which philosophers can approach a subject.

That said, these types of entry-level books are better when they include a chronological approach to philosophy. I saw jumps between topics and even within topics which seemed to ignore hundreds of years of thinking and debate.

As a cursory overview, this book delivers. As a middle-level book, the writing begins to falter. Seasoned philosophers will probably want to stay away from this one.

The Master Dentistry series provides a good overview of the subject areas and I found them particularly useful during exam times. The text is appropriately supplemented with great diagrams and the layout of the books makes all the subject areas easy to access and find.

At the end of each chapter there are self assessment questions which were really useful and would aid any student’s learning. Each chapter has a helpful overview and learning objectives are provided throughout each chapter.

The books give a great summary of all the subject areas they cover but need to be used in conjunction with a more detailed textbook. I used them quite often if I didn't understand a certain part of a lecture as the wording is easy to understand and is uncomplicated. They're a must for any dental student’s bookshelf!

About the Author
Paul Tripp is president of Paul Tripp Ministries, a nonprofit organization whose mission statement is "Connecting the transforming power of Jesus Christ to everyday life." This mission leads Paul to weekly speaking engagements around the world. Paul is also the Professor of Pastoral Life and Care at Redeemer Seminary in Dallas, Texas, and the Executive Director of the Center for Pastoral Life and Care in Fort Worth, Texas, and has taught at respected institutions worldwide. A must-read for anyone who wants to see their chuch become a discipling/soul care church

The evangelical Christian community who believes the Bible is sufficient for all life needs to read and believe the message of this book again and again and again and again! We are indeed people in need of change, helping people in need of change.

The church has bought the following lies from the world: 1) The Bible is not sufficient to handle all our "problems". 2) we must "farm people out" to "experts" 3) we can only hope for the best the world has offer in "behavior management".

The truth:
The Bible is sufficient, it is more than sufficient.
We are each equipped to counsel or comprehensively disciple (as I like to call it). If you read the Scriptures and take them seriously, then you are equipped. A bit of reading and training will show you what you already know to come alongside another sinner and help them not just "survive" but THRIVE in their lives, despite anything that is happening to them (or happened to them).
The Bible promises genuine heart change: if the Gospel saves, it also sanctifies, but the Million Dollar question is HOW? I know so many Christians, myself included, who have been beset by so many sins and the sins seem to strangle the life out of us.

BUT I don't know what I don't know. You don't know what you don't know. Read this book and begin the journey to see that discipleship is an "everyone - all of the time" activity", not reserved for the specially trained and highly exalted "professional". We are each called to this, our ugly sin included. That is precisely what makes our discipleship stand apart from the world. It is sinners reaching out to other sinners both in need of change, and Paul Tripp's book makes the case eloquently and fervently.

The church should be the epicenter for all christian soul care. It is sadly not (overall).
Even in churches where the sufficiency of Scripture is not an issue, the "referral mentality" is still firmly ensconced: "send that hot mess over to the Pastor" we say to ourselves, "I cannot help him or her"... Paul Tripp explains why this is simply not true.

Excellent read if you were ever wondering how to begin to see your church and everyone in it part of this "everybody - all of the time" ministry.

Good book

This is a good book for people who want to counsel others or for those who are looking for some answers for some of life's troubles. I wrote a critique on this book and if amazon will let me i will post it below:

This is a critique concerning Instruments in the Redeemer’s Hands by Paul Tripp published by P&R publishing company in 2002. This book is part of a series titled Resources for Changing Lives published in cooperation with The Christian Counseling and Education Foundation. Tripp does an excellent job presenting the biblical reason for many life problems Christians face and the biblical solution to those problems. I found this work to be highly edifying and encouraging.
The root of the problem is sin. Christians sin because they are rebellious at heart but God offers another way. God can use anyone and every member of the body of Christ has a purpose. The Christian’s initial purpose is to bring the word of God to others. The problem here is that many Christians do not know how to use the Bible in their own lives and fall short as a result. The root of the problem is the heart of the individual. Every human at heart is a worshiper; some worship sin while others worship God. Those who worship God will deal with conflict. This conflict can come from family, co-workers, themselves, or any number of other things. However, God calls us to walk in him and trust in him to get us through these conflicts. He also calls us to be ambassadors to represent the message, methods, and character of the King. Tripp presents a four part solution to life problems titled “love, know, speak, and do.” This is not a four-step process; rather, “they are simply four important elements of biblical ministry”
Tripp continues by setting the foundation of personal ministry in love. Counselors are to help people with the love that Christ shows the church. Many counselees will face fears and anxieties about their problems and counselors must help them face those fears as opposed to just spouting scripture at them. The counselor must let the counselee know three major things: the counselor has heard his/her struggle, God is there and understands his/her struggle, and the counselor will stand with the counselee and support them biblically. These things will build horizontal trust, vertical hope, and commitment to the process. Suffering will happen but it has a purpose. Counselors can tell personal stories to build a bridge between their past suffering and the suffering of the counselee. The counselor must not assume anything but rather, they should ask questions. All questions asked should be open-ended questions that provoke more than a simple yes or no answer.
Confrontations are necessary and they require love not condemnation. Counselors must not be afraid of confrontation. Confrontation serves a biblical purpose such as when Nathan confronted David and told him a parable that allowed David to see the error of his ways. Counselors must be like Nathan in that they must allow the confronted party the right to condemn themselves and repent of their sins. Tripp follows with a poignant point; the counselor must not become a mini messiah by confusing his or her own personal agenda with God’s agenda. Then, he concludes with the importance of accountability. Accountability provides structure, guidance, assistance, encouragement, and warning.
Tripp points out some biblical truths that were particularly edifying for me such as, “Sin is fundamentally idolatrous. I do wrong things because my heart desires something more than the Lord.” As a Christian, we do not often think in this manner but it is true. He follows shortly with “At its core, sin is moral thievery. It steals the worship that rightly belongs to God and gives it to someone or something else.” In addition, “Every human being is a worshiper, in active pursuit of the thing that rules his heart.” These statements concerning the nature of sin caused me to look at sin in a different manner. I gained a more thorough understanding of the problem of sin and how every Christian is susceptible to the problems it causes. Another enlightening passage is found in Tripp’s section on confrontation: “Failure to make loving rebuke part of our relationships gives the Devil a huge opportunity.” Here Tripp stresses the importance of love and the biblical preparation a counselor must undertake to achieve this love in any situation.
This is a highly edifying and encouraging presentation of the biblical reason for many life problems Christians face and the biblical solution to those problems. This book will serve as a tool that I will use on a regular basis. With the helpful appendixes and homework suggestions, that the publisher gives the counselor the right to reproduce and distribute freely, I will find many uses for this book in the future.

This is an exceptional book! Paul David Tripp's book is more than just a guide to counseling, it is a guidebook to real and lasting change. This book is a difinitive treatise on how to assist fellow believers in lasting change, while we are changing as well in the process. Any Christian, whether in the pulpit or in the pew has a obligation to stand alongside our fellow strugglers. Paul Tripp's book provides the tools and gives the blueprint to do just that.
Very well written, deeply practical, and throughly scriptural, you would be hard pressed to find a better ministry or life tool. Instruments in the Redeemer's Hands is outstanding!

Money more than well spent

Inspired grandkids(teens) to set up a "spa" roomm in their house and offer us free massages, and pedicures, manicures when we stay with them. I know I was impressed with their techniques, and Grandpa didnt want the spoiling to end! Think I got my money-s worth out of this gift!

Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812-1852) was one of the most influential architects and designers of the 19th century. He pioneered an appreciation of medieval art and architecture and established in his polemical writings and design manuals the principles upon which the 19th-century Gothic Revival was based. His ideas were adopted and developed by followers as diverse as William Morris and Frank Lloyd Wright. Pugin virtually invented modern concepts of interior and industrial design. A master in the use of colour, pattern and ornament, with no fear of modern technology, he was also a prolific product designer, creating furniture and woodwork, silver, metalwork and jewellery, pottery and tiles, textiles and wallpapers, and books, all of which reflected his desire to adapt the principles of medieval art to the modern world. This catalogue and the exhibition it accompanies establish Pugin as a figure of worldwide significance. The objects in this catalogue, which are illustrated primarily in colour, reflect Pugin's diversity as a product designer and the modernity of his design principles. Ten essays and their illustrations are included. They show the development of pre-Puginian Gothic and underline the nature of Pugin's role in the history of architecture and design.

English architect, designer, polemicist and convert to Catholicism, Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812-1852) changed the course of Gothic Revival by linking it firmly to its medieval roots. No mere revivalist, he regarded Gothic as a living language, and his cathedrals, churches, colleges, seminaries, cottages and secular buildings are highly original and personal in their concern for context and texture. Pugin's design of the interiors of the Houses of Parliament reveals his mastery of pattern, color and ornament. He suffered periodic bouts of insanity and loss of eyesight, dying at 40 shortly after a complete mental breakdown, yet his legacy lived on in the Gothic movement in Europe and North America. The catalogue of an exhibition at the Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts in New York City, this handsomely illustrated study includes essays by 10 American and English scholars who discuss his tragic life, his architectural theory and the full range of his work in ceramics, furniture, sacred vestments, metalwork, textiles, jewelry, stained glass, tiles and wallpaper.

A Helpful "life-and-times" of Jane Austen

This review was originally written for the hardcover edition, but on the assumption that this is fairly similar, I'll repeat it here.

This book is a Companion in the sense that it attempts to give the reader context for reading Austen's work, not in the sense of a reference work listing all her characters, etc. It is perfect for anyone beginning to read Austen's works, especially if they have little knowledge of the era. It would also be helpful as a basic guide to the late Georgian period, which is the setting of so many historical and romance novels.

Ross starts off with a brief (44 page) biography, followed by 8 chapters on the era: "The Common Daily Routine", "Of Lovers and Husbands", "Politics and Public Events", etc. In each, Ross discusses the era in general terms, and also relates the topic to Austen's life and writings. I read the book straight through, but it appears that each chapter could stand on its own: information is sometimes repeated if it relates to more than one topic. Lydia Bennett's finding ornaments in a book store is mentioned in both "The Present Fashions" and "The Subject of Books."

There are numerous plates of well-chosen pictures relating to both Jane Austen's personal life and the era in general.

There are no notes, but there is a helpful, but admittedly not exhaustive bibliography and an unusually detailed index. This index isn't perfect, it only lists one of the references to Lydia mentioned above, but it is much more thorough and in depth than most indexes, and helpfully has little notes after some of the entries that may be enough in themselves to refresh the reader's memory.
