Beware: Amazon's records are fouled up with respect to this book. Although the title of this book Sea Power and the description show up correctly, the picture on this page is of a different book, "The Great Sea War", which was derived from "Sea Power", and in fact, that's what I got the first time I ordered the book. You may have better luck searching on "Sea Power Potter", which should get you this book: Sea Power.

This is a collection of articles written by historians of American sea power; some articles are dissertation-like. If you can yawn through the text-book style writing, it contains LOTS of great historical information about the ebbs and flows of the American navy and merchant marine.

The recently-released "Introduction to Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing" by Luks, Glenny, and Robertson completely hits the mark as a clear, concise, and complete source for understanding CPET interpretation. This useful, but complex test has many nuances that makes interpretation difficult. Also, the concepts required for understanding CPET are typically difficult to teach. That is where this primer comes in; the book is divided into several sections, starting with an overall description of the test and a review of the basic respiratory physiology terms that are vital to CPET. Next, there is a detailed section on data collection, followed by a stepwise approach to data interpretation. The graphics are superb with clear descriptions and the various colored plots are clearly marked. Finally, there is a section containing cases with history, data, graphics, diagnosis, and excellent stepwise explanations. I read this book in a few hours over two days. It is compact, but packs a significant educational punch. This is an excellent source for anyone who has an interest in cardiopulmonary exercise testing, such as pulmonary fellows, students of exercise physiology, and specialists in sports medicine. Highly recommended!

Economic and cultural history

This book is an overview of the culture and business of tobacco. After a introductory chapter that covers the botany and chemistry of tobacco, Goodman presents a cultural and economic history of the plant and its products. He begins with Native Americans, who used tobacco in ceremonies and approached it with reverence. He then details how European explorers took tobacco back to Europe, and how its use was quickly adopted there by the general public. Its adoption was hastened by medical reports claiming numerous health benefits of consuming tobacco, from preventing colds to curing bowel ailments. Goodman describes how tobacco played an important role in settling the New World and how its role in the early history of slaving cultures there. He goes on to describe the role that tobacco growing played in colonial economies and how the invention of the mass produced cigarette helped change consumption patterns worldwide. Towards the end of the book, he explores the history of government involvement in tobacco production and consumption, before turning to big business, consolidation and diversification of the tobacco industry. He closes with a short chapter on modern health concerns relating to tobacco, and how they may affect the culture of tobacco consumption and production.
The book is very academic in tone and structure- -it reads like a dissertation. Original sources are cited throughout the text, and there are numerous tables. At the end of the book is a 2-page glossary and a 40-page bibliography. Although Goodman's style is reasonably clear, he does have an annoying habit of explicitly stating his main ideas only at the very end of a section, or at the beginning of the following chapter. If he had introduced his sections with explicit statements of his ideas, the text would have been easier to follow.

Meticulousness in all aspects.

What is often neglected when writing about "tobacco", the book covers next to all aspects of it, i.e. from the production of the plant to processing the crop, buying, trading, cigarette manufacture, advertising, sponsorhsip and control policies. I profited a lot from the precise information on indivdual farmers (who started the commercial business in 1602 ? You'll find it here, and also why he is better known under the name of his wife), as well as on companies. etc. Fascinating for a geographer with historical interest to see the similarity of interlinkages between rise and fall of growing areas as well as farming societies - and to draw conclusions what is about to happen now in Third World growing countries. While most of the large monographies put a blind eye on the detrimental ecological consequences of growing - the author does not. Since the chapters are ranked chronologically, with a special interest for example in Africa, you sometimes get lost - and learn a lot about other areas.

First Original Sword Art Online Manga

Written by the series author, the "Girls' Ops" line focuses on the side characters of Sword Art Online in a manga format. You won't find Kirito or Asuna here with the focus instead on Liz, Silica, and Leafa. The plot is simple, the two lead characters are out of town and the three remaining want to complete a newly released quest in ALfheim Online. It's a mostly lighthearted tale, but becomes more serious when they run into another survivor of Sword Art Online, one who is still struggling with the aftereffects.

These are original stories not found in any of the novels with artwork very reminiscent of that found in the light novels albeit by a different artist. The art was one of my favorite things while reading this since the artist puts lots of background and sight gags that would be lost in a text form.

Not the best I've read, but with hooks that could lead to much greater stories in future volumes.

SAO: Girls' Ops Vol 1

This was a really good read! As someone who got into anime because of SAO, I've always had a special place in my heart for the series, despite the mistakes here and there that it's made. Nevertheless, I went into this manga with high expectations, and they were all met. I was once again introduced to some of my favorite supporting characters from the series, Liz, Silica, and Leafa, and got to see them, just hang out as friends. Kirito and Asuna play a very minimal role in the story, relegated to mentions only, as the spotlight is on the aforementioned trio and their adventures in Alfheim Online. If you enjoy SAO, you'll enjoy this manga.

Very interesting

I like a good comic reading but SAO reading for Gun Gale or the Death game gets my head out the show but reading the new spin off makes me happy with a bit of fan service. All you hear is Kirito this but not his real name Gazuto. But Girl Ops after you finish the reading you think they want to integrate a world without Kirito but pleasing fans by introducing a new character from the death game to the SAO universe.

Educational Testing & Measurement ~ Classroom Application & Practice was a required text for a college course, so I need the book for the class. Being able to purchase it loose leaf for on third of the price that the college book store was charged, saved me over $100. That is a serious discount just to get the book unbound & have to put it in a dollar binder to use. The text is identical to the bound version. This option to purchase a needed text in unbound format is great to stretch the college budget.

Can You Get Away with The Previous Edition?

To me, a book published in 2009 vs. 2013, with a price difference of a US penny vs. $150 begs the serious question of updates! In the case of this text, the authors have been very ethical in producing a substantial update, not just a new edition like a software text repeated as a "must" every 6 months to rip off students.

Which then brings us to the next question: how much has really changed in the last 4 years? First, for background, I've been in edu testing all my life, and I'm one of the founding directors at preptorial dot org, the free test prep databases; narrow, but relevant to this text. There are two sources for potential changes in measurement: government policy and technical research, which only matters in a book like this to the extent which ETS developers adopt that research.

On the first, it comes down to Bush vs. Obama with no child left behind vs. what was initially called "affordable college" and "teacher training." RTI, IDEA and other updates show that President Obama's derision of "teach to the test" vs. Bush hasn't really changed a lot of the way in which things are done in 2014 vs. 2009! I'm not making ANY political statement here, just trying to give you a foundation to decide on spending an extra $150! The REAL, subtle, lesser known changes in IDEA and RTI (and president Obama funded disabled education with 12 billion via ARRA in 09) are on the LEGAL side, and these are not covered as case precedent updates in this fine text (lessening the moving party persuasion burden on parents of disabled kids, for example, a traditional and confirmed decision effectively putting a burden on those parents in 2005, softened in 2013 with case precendent, for example).

What about more recent developments in the relationship of RTI to IDEA? Response to Intervention is controversial, and most of the relationships (in the legal system) were ironed out by 2007. So, for purposes of this book's added value, that is (temporarily) stable, and not a significant factor between editions. The details are, but those change monthly, so web/journal research would be needed with either edition. What about from an Obama/ in practice standpoint? The practical application comes down (to oversimplify) to balancing the trade off of labeling a child "disabled" vs. not responding with special ed or programs when needed. This tension has not changed between editions. Since (practically) this disproportionately affects minorities and the underprivileged (most public school teachers know this all too well and it is what I deal with daily at Preptorial), it is perhaps surprising that many of the funds that have been allocated in that general area have not really impacted the day to day in testing at this writing.

So, bottom line: First, this book is a MUST in one of the two editions. I completely disagree with folks who trash talk the authors because it is expensive, and then say it is "not worth it." You MUST know these materials if you teach, period. BUT: if you are willing to spend a few hours online brushing up on RTI, IDEA and some recent articles on educational testing, DO consider the previous edition. This comes down to your budget vs. how you value your time. If you have money, or access to it, DO get this edition, and save yourself time. If you're a student, or on a tight budget, or value scarce funds more than your time, DO get the previous edition and augment it with web updates. The publisher won't want to hear this, but not everyone can afford $150 bucks, or even the $70 for the loose leaf version.

Disclosure: due to preptorial dot org, I'm a testing advocate, but not in the derisive "teach to the test" sense as much as using testing TO teach, in a fun, "puzzle" and detective like format. To be VERY honest, a child isn't going to get into Harvard without a good SAT score. I don't "advocate" this, it is just reality! I recently helped add a whole translated database of 50,000 questions to preptorial on PhD testing in China. From a planetary standpoint, testing is far from going away. In fact, in a broader sense, it is the essence of science, and has been proven in numerous fields (eg. early testing in software development) to be a must.

Perfect series for young children

I was looking to start lessons with my music loving, but rather hyperactive 4 1/2-year old. I found this series of books to be perfect. Right now, we're working on the Lesson Book, the Theory Book, and the Activity/Ear Training book. The combination is wonderful. The lesson book introduces the initial topic and that topic is supported by the other books with lots of drawing and coloring activities that my daughter adores (and which significantly help reiterate the concepts being taught). Early examples include circle the two black key groups, draw the down-stems on the left-hand notes, color the #2 finger pink/#3 finger green, listen to the clap patterns, etc. We will move to the other books in the series when we're ready. I really like how each of the "helper" books refer back to the specific page in the initial lesson book that is being supported. Likewise, the basic lesson book has footnotes to say when it's time to move to the next "helper" book. I bought a used copy of the teachers guide for myself. However, get the new books for your kid as I would guess that any used copy would already come "pre-colored". In all honesty, this series would probably be considered too "babyish" for kids much above the age of six. However, for your preschooler or early elementary-aged child, you won't find better than this.

ETA: My copy of the book also has a CD which this particular book does not appear to possess. However the edition with the CD is also available here on Amazon.

This whole series is fantastic! I've been playing flute and guitar since I was eight, and have recently wanted to get my whole family excited about the piano. I did a lot of research to find books that would cover all aspects of learning (Theory, Technic, recital pieces, etc.) and Alfred's piano library has it all. It introduces all the necessary elements of music, while making it fun and easy to learn. For children, I would recommend getting at least the Lesson, Recital, Theory, and Technic books for each level. For adults or those with some prior music knowledge, I'd recommend Alfred's All-In-One Piano Course. Great series!

Alfred Method is great for beginner students . . . and teachers!

I would call myself a beginner piano teacher, as I play the piano myself but have had no instruction as to how to teach others to play. I now have four beginner students, whom I have been teaching for a little over a year.

I love the Alfred method. The four books: technic, lesson, solo/recital, and theory all seem to really work well together. The songs coordinate with each other, so for each new concept taught in the lesson books, the student has a warm-up, a solo piece, and some theory work to back it up. I find this to be very effective. It gives the students a chance to see several examples of each concept, and practice each new concept in different ways until they achieve perfection with it. It also really walks the teacher through each concept very clearly, giving definitions for musical terms and clear instructions for which songs go together. I feel like the order in which concepts are taught also makes a lot of sense.

Overall, it's a good method for a teacher who doesn't know a whole lot about HOW to teach another person to play the piano!

I currently have some of my students on this level, and others on the regular beginner levels. I love how all of the different levels are interchangeable, so gifted students can advance more quickly, and students who need a little extra reinforcement can stay on the lower levels. The map for how this all works is on the back of all of the books, which you can see on the book preview. So many great things about Alfred!
