My one-year-old loves this book

This book is an oldie but goodie, and I'm reviewing it because my one-year-old son loves it so much. He loves it so much, in fact, that he cries when he thinks that we have finished our readings. Yes, that's readings, plural, because we must always read this one more than once. "One thumb, one thumb, drumming on a drum," the text reads. The first few times, until eventually I am tempted to read "One head, one head, banging on a wall."

The entire book features monkeys, mainly drumming on drums, but also doing a few other things, with sing-song rhyming text. "Dum Ditty Dum Ditty Dum Dum Dum" is an oft-repeated refrain.

There is a board book version of this book and a regular version. The board book version is slightly shorter than the original version.

You might like: If you have a little one, he or she might be hypnotized by the sing-song rhymes, and want to hear this book over and over again. There is also some rudimentary counting, and your little one may learn a couple of words like "apple" and "plum."

You might not like: If you have something against monkeys, you might not like this book. In fact, the climax of this book features literally millions of monkeys, kind of like a joyful looking Planet of the Apes. Maybe that is why they look so happy: they finally exterminated all the humans. Also, if it bothers you that creatures which are actually apes are continuously referred to as monkeys, you might not like this book (it doesn't bother me all that much, but just throwing it out there).

I give this book one star, and my son gives it nine stars, so I will average them out and just give it five stars. How could I give something my son loves so much any less?

One of the Best Early Books to Read to Your Kid

We always give "Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb" to our friends who have recently had a new baby. The cadence is, from our experience, much appreciated by pre-readers and is a great book for them to learn to read. Al Perkins is a genius for writing this excellent attention-holder that parents will never tire of reading. From our kid's fascination with this they easily went on to more complex books. I recommend this for pre-readers (to be read to) and early readers without any reservations.

She loves monkeys, apes and primates of all kinds, I ordered the hardback based on other reviews which stated the board book edition had been abridged. She loves the repetition of the text and is beginning to memorize it even after only a few readings. Toddlers love repetition and she is no exception.

Miguel Oliveira

Miguel Oliveira is a versatile IT architect, system engineer, and information security enthusiast who has been living in Switzerland since 2012; before then, he lived in Portugal. During that time, Miguel worked mostly as an IT consultant, having worked with the major companies in Portugal (namely Novabase and Microsoft) with which he designed, developed, and implemented several System Center solutions across different clients, from the banking/financial industry to energy/oil companies. In Switzerland, he worked for international organizations and for a private company as an infrastructure architect and as a senior systems engineer at the time of publishing this book. Miguel's experience in IT started early as huge curiosity developed in him when he was very young, and it hasn't stopped ever since. The will to develop his knowledge was so strong that at the age of 16, he had his own server at home, and with it, he achieved the first step of his career as an IT systems administrator in 2003, making him an expert on Microsoft products today. He also has good knowledge of VMware, Unix, Network, and Security, which he uses in his daily tasks as an infrastructure architect providing insight and expertise for solutions that are requested by his company. This book is Miguel's first ever published book, and it has been an amazing and interesting adventure.

A well structured and organized book on SC Orch 2012 R2

I find most of the information on SC Orch scattered across forums and blogs with no structure or end plan. That is why i prefer a centralized source of information on a complex product as this.

This book is very well organzied not only for a simple installation guide with the best practices on the product but if you grasp the knowledge passed on by the author you will end up with a clean and easy too use piece of software as a Sys Admin in your infrastruture.
I hope to see more on the other System Center products.

In an age in which the perception of Catholic Christianity tends to be marred by ideological bias, it is refreshing to see a book that explicates the existence of the Church as the continuation of the presence of Jesus Christ in history. Giussani's goal makes clear that it is possible to have a concrete, historical relationship with Christ--not as a figure of our imagination or a product of wishful thinking (we know that would be as flawed as we ourselves are) but as God who is present and still acts through the Holy Spirit's use of men and women who are both saints and sinners. Giussani clarifies how it is that our individual temperaments and personalities can remain vehicles for the divine in time and space, and how throughout the history of revelation, those chosen to carry out God's plan in history, beginning with Abraham, Moses, David, were not perfect, but rather, were human beings as prone to weakness as we ourselves are. Nevertheless, this is only a part of the book's thesis. The entire work itself is a fitting and complete elucidation of Giussani's thought, beginning with "The Religious Sense" and continuing with "At the Origin of the Christian Claim." This is an author who brings the newness of his personal charism to truths that are eternal, and the mix of these two aspects of his work are both thrilling and life-giving.

A great book to enter into an understanding of the Church!

This book explains that the Church is a life - not a place where people follow a bunch of old rules. Giussani brilliantly explains what constitutes this church, what its mission is, what it claims to be, and what it is not. A great book to enter into an understanding of what the Catholic Church really is, from someone on the inside of this life. If you are not a believer I would venture to say it would make you curious about this phenomenon that was started 2000 years ago by a carpenter's son from Nazareth. If already a believer, I think that it will educate you to a deeper understanding of what it is and expel some notions about it that are false. An indispensable book for any Catholic or any person who really wants to know what the church claims to be in history.

Huge resource

I just got this book and I can't believe how many songs there are. They are also listed by their nationality (Irish, Scottish, Welsh). I play a little guitar and I was looking for an Irish song book I could just play the chords with. This book has simple chord charts in the back and tells you which to play during the song. It doesn't give any type of strumming pattern, which would be helpful for me the beginner, it shows just the melody notations. Being in the SCA, it's nice to have so many traditional songs at my fingertips. It also DOES give a few instrumental pieces, the ubiquitous "Irish Washerwoman" being one of them. I would have liked to have seen a little bit about each song, although I know this is not a history book, but would have settled for a general time frame each song was created in. Other than that, a wonderful resource.

great fun

This book is one of the best. I have many, but I always return to this one when I want to play for fun. I play the accordion, and the guitar cords allow me to make music out of the simple melody. It's a great choice, with many songs I never knew existed before I bought this book, and I heard a few.

It is a very nice book containing over 400 tunes and songs from Ireland Scotland and Wales. I particularly liked the Hebrides folksongs section, as I have recently listened to some of them and I liked them very much. The book contains sheet music in simple form and simple chords even for someone who is still a beginner in music studies.

About the Author
William B. Gudykunst is a professor speech communication at California State University, Fullerton. He received his B.S. and M.A. degrees in sociology from Arizona State University. After completing his M.A., Bill spent three years in the U.S. Navy stationed in Yokosuka, Japan. He became interested in intercultural communication while working as an Intercultural Relations Specialist in the Navy. After being released from active duty, Bill went to the University of Minnesota, where he completed his Ph.D. in 1977.. . Bill�s work focuses on developing a theory of interpersonal and intergroup effectiveness that can be applied to improving the quality of communication. Bill is the author of Bridging Differences (Sage, 1994) and coauthor of Cultural and Interpersonal Communication (with S. Ting-Tommey, Sage, 1988), Bridging Japanese/North American Differences (with T. Nishida, Sage, 1994), and Building Bridges (Houghton Mifflin, 1995). He has also edited six other books with various publishers..

Young Yun Kim is a professor of communication at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, and formerly taught at Governors State University in Illinois. Young was born wand raised in Seoul, Koreas, where she received her B.A. degree from Seoul National University. In 1970, she moved to the United States and completed her M.A.. degree at the University of Hawaii in conjunction with the East-West Center. She received a Ph.D. degree in 1976 from Northwestern University. Young teaches courses and directs doctoral theses in the area of international, intercultural, and interethnic/interracial communication. She has published her work in journals such as Communication Yearbook, Human Communication Research, and International Journal of Intercultural Relations. She is the author or editor of a number of books including Interethnic Communication (Sage, 1986), Theories in Intercultural Communication (Sage, 1998) Communication and Cross-Cultural Adaptation (Multilingual Matters, 1998). She is a member of the editorial boards of Communication Research, Human Communication Research, and International Journal of Intercultural Relations.

I think I enjoyed this book more so than the class that I took on communication. It had very modern, practical examples of communication. It went beyond the question of communication among various cultural backgrounds, it also touched on how men and women communicate or don't.

Well Written, Great Mix Of History And Human

I love books about aviation and I love books about flying, so this looked really good - I ordered it. I find it to be a compelling story, well researched and written.

The story is almost unbelievable. Even in a time of heros, "Pappy" Gunn stands out. He was a former enlisted man who was in the Philippines when WW II broke out. From the first, the story is breathlessly fast, moving as fast as the Japanese advanced. He managed to scramble together the aircraft and personnel to support the fighting, even while worrying about his wife and two kids who were with him in Manilla. In the end he was deceived and ended up leaving them there as he went off to war - and the Japanese took Manilla shortly afterwards. That didn't stop his plans to go back and rescue them. The entire book is about his struggle to this purpose - even while fulfilling his duties to the military. The parts of the book about the prison for foreigners caught in the Philippines was absolutely gripping, keeping me on the edge of my seat, so to speak, as I wondered how it would turn out. In order to get back to them, he had to win the war, and he developed a revolutionary method of warfare (in spite of the resistance of higher command) - and it is still in use today. This is a story of American innovation and presents a different light on the events of the Pacific war.

The writing is excellent. The author has to use some license in his description of the conversations between people, but that makes the story very readable. I can tell from the various battle details that the author really researched well. He writes from the third person, providing a great perspective of the events, while still being able to delve into the background of things that were happening of which Pappy could not have known. It is an excellent method, and I never got bored. By the first couple of chapters, I was hooked, and read through long into the night.

Summary: Well written, gripping human and historical details - well done. Highly recommended.

Never a dull moment!! This story has everything you could ever want! When will the movie be out?!?!

My grandfather was a pilot in World War II and had so many incredible stories from his own experiences and those of friends of his and I always begged him to write them down...or dictate them so I could accurately capture the stories. It was an era of incredible acts of heroism that often went unknown and definitely were rarely acknowledged. The war was replete with these acts of valor and they were often performed by incredibly interesting and complex characters! This story of heartbreak, torture, dogged determination, heroism, intrigue, action and love goes beyond any of the stories I heard growing up. The details are nearly too jaw-droppingly implausible that if not for the outlandish stories I believe were true of my grandfather's experiences, I would almost doubt this. I feel like this book should start with Paul Harvey's famous line..."And now...for the rest of the story..." as the way this story becomes a history-shaping journey also feels surreal.

It is truly a gripping tome...yes, the book is long, but you are so engrossed in the story, that you will not even notice! I plowed through this because there is literally never a dull moment!

Compelling, engaging, and very well written novel about a most interesting WWII aviator

Very well-written compelling text, keeping my interest and making a long airline flight go quickly. The story is one that I hadn't heard before, bringing the reader to a fascinating time (the start of WWII) and place (initially Manila) in the presence of an equally fascinating family. There are a few minor issues that I encountered along the way which can perhaps be fixed in the final iteration:

1) Gunn's 1939 Buick is referred to as having a 5.2 liter Fireball Straight-8. Of course, no one would have called it that then. We used cubic inches until just a few years ago. The engine was Buick's 320.

2) Gunn is said to open the throttle "all the way" on his Beech 18 before checking his magnetos. Mag checks are not performed at full throttle, but rather at some fixed setting just a little ways above idle.

3) During the initial nighttime Japanese bomber run overhead, Julie recalls seeing the silhouettes of the pilots and Nath saw the Japanese insignia against milk colored wings. The raid is later said to have come in at 20,000' to avoid the poorly capable defense batteries. If the bombers had actually flown in at 20,000', the planes themselves would not have been visible, particularly at night, and it would have been impossible to see either the insignia or pilot silhouettes.

I'm nit-picking, obviously, but in addition to this being a compelling story of interest from WWII, it's also an aviation story which pilots will very much appreciate. And pilots nit-pick. In any case, the story left me wanting to fly right seat for Pappy.
