Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, September 2014: In 2006, a pair of rocket scientists died on a Utah highway, killed in a collision with a student named Reggie Shaw, who had been texting at the time of the accident. A Deadly Wandering uses this moment to launch itself into an investigation/rumination on the increasing presence of technology in our lives, probing for answers to the question How much is too much? This might have been boring if anyone but Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Matt Richtel had written it. The result is anything but: Richtel has combined his savvy as a New York Times science reporter with his skill as a writer of technology-infused thrillers to weave two separate, if related, stories together: the tragedy—and ultimate redemption—of Reggie Shaw, and the deleterious effects of technology on our brains, bodies, and culture. A Deadly Wandering is a riveting blend of humanity and science, and a masterful work of narrative nonfiction. —Jon Foro

Review
“Keen and elegantly raw. ... Not just a morality tale but a probe sent into the world of technology. ... Richtel draws all the characters with a fine brush, a delicacy that treats misery both respectfully and front-on.” (Christian Science Monitor (One of the 10 Best Nonfiction Books of the Year))

“Richtel’s compassionate and persuasive book deserves a spot next to Fast Food Nation and To Kill a Mockingbird in America’s high school curriculums. To say it may save lives is self-evident.” (New York Times Book Review (Editor's Choice))

“Americans are addicted to their technology, putting us on a modern day collision course with very real consequences. Matt Richtel brilliantly tells the story of the aftermath of a deadly distracted driving crash. His portrait is riveting. I could not stop reading, and neither will you.” (Ray LaHood, former U.S. Secretary of Transportation)

“A portrait of our digital age that will deeply frighten you and cause you to reevaluate many common aspects of your ‘connected’ life. ... An extraordinarily important book that everyone—and I mean everyone—should read.” (Douglas Preston, co-author of The Monster of Florence)

“A masterpiece of reporting, insight, and empathy. ... A beautiful, cautionary tale that reads like a novel, and that we disregard at our risk.” (Robert Kurson, author of Shadow Divers)

“A Deadly Wandering is more than a page-turner. It’s a book that can save lives.” (Nicholas Carr, author of The Shallows)

“Matt Richtel’s riveting book is narrative nonfiction at its finest. ... This book should be placed in every school and legislative chamber in the country.” (Jon Huntsman, former governor of Utah)

“This book does that most amazing of feats: it makes cutting-edge scientific research feel relevant to the choices we make every time we get in a car, sit at a desk, or talk to our friends and family.” (Charles Duhigg, author of The Power of Habit)

“A gripping book. ... This is human drama and the latest knowledge about obsessive technology woven together in memorable style.” (Ralph Nader, author of Unsafe at Any Speed)

“Illuminates the perils of information overload... Raises fascinating and troubling issues about the cognitive impact of our technology.” (Publishers Weekly)

Intensely gripping, compelling, and sobering... A Deadly Wandering gives the potentially lethal risks of the digital age a very human face -- one which we can, if we’re honest, readily see in the mirror.” (Winnipeg Free Press (A Best Book of the Year))

“Exhaustively researched. ... Richtel brings a novelist’s knack for unspooling narrative conflict to bear on Shaw’s real-life drama.” (San Francisco Chronicle (A Best Book of the Year))

“Each page is... irresistible. ... A richly detailed and compellingly readable exploration of the ‘clash’ between our brains and the electronic devices that, for many of us, have become essential to ‘every facet of life.’” (Minneapolis Star Tribune)

An Important Book for You and to Gift to Those You Love
By Lawrence Sterne
This book will change your life. It could save your life. If you know someone— anyone — who has a cell phone and drives a car, buy them a copy of this book.

On a rainy morning in 2006 young Reggie Shaw, ever so briefly distracted by a text message, crossed the divider, causing an accident that left two young fathers dead. Although this occurred only a few short years ago there was little consensus and even less case law around the concepts of distracted driving. In the hands of author Matt Richter the history and challenges of technological innovation and the ability of the human mind to adapt take on a page-turning urgency. From about the year 1850 scientists have been studying stimuli's effect and the limits of our ability to process multiple inputs. In the book we become familiar with how today's devices work on our brains, why they are addictive and compulsive and we ever so gradually come to recognize some of the downsides of technology, particularly, in this case, multi-tasking. For a techno-believer like me it is an eye opener.

In Christianity it is often said that you don't really accept Christ until you loose everything. While this isn't a "Christian story" it shares much of the loss/redemption theme, especially the concept that we can build a better world through certain behaviors without which we are doomed. Don't get me wrong. This book isn't about God or the afterlife. It's about unintended consequences on a massive scale. You realize that it's not just about the other guy, it could be, could happen, to you or someone you love. Once you understand the stakes I am sure you'll become proactively tuned to the need to keep technological advances within the limits of human capacity.

You will be moved by the story of Reggie's loss and redemption, troubled by the powers we have given to our own creations but ultimately a believer that we can -- must -- control them. Buy the book. Give it to everyone you know. This is important.

This is an important and enlightening book, a "must-read"
By L. Nakajima
I just finished A Deadly Wandering last night and was very moved by it for a number of reasons that I am still contemplating. This is a very well written, absorbing, enlightening and factually well supported non-fiction novel. I found it hard to put down, but even more importantly, found it extremely relevant to my life and my work.

I have not been an in-car texter for a decade now, having realized very early how dangerous it is, but was thrilled last year when my new car came with hands-free ("legal" in CA) phone capabilities, which I have used on occasion. After reading the book and internalizing the sobering science of attention, I turned off the Bluetooth on my new iPhone 6 before getting into the car this morning.

I have a super long commute to and from work each day and, like many, consider those hours “productive time” when able to take a work call or catch up with a relative or friend while commuting. However, I will now not be using my phone in the car while in motion ever again.

People's lives and safety are unquestionably more important than any of the multi-tasking conveniences these increasingly capable devices can bring us in our busy lives and I do not want to end up like the book’s protagonist, Reggie Shaw. So, through Matt Richtel, that young man with a tragic past has touched one more life.

For folks like myself who have worked in the internet technology industry, and particularly the mobile industry, since its early days, it is really moving to read a true story about how these technologies are distracting people even to the point of death either in traffic causing horrendous and preventable accidents or in their personal lives, with children tuning-out, relationships being eroded and very real and unnecessary stress being added to our lives with the gadgets and services demanding or even addictively sucking away your attention.

Having spent most of my career working for the biggest names in mobile evangelizing mobile technologies like texting, mobile internet, mobile navigation, and mobile apps, I feel a tremendous amount of responsibility for increasing awareness for this important new scientific evidence for technology’s impact on attention, awareness, brain function and brain health. There are positives and negative implications and possibilities and as a society should make raise awareness of both and take action. Awareness is an opportunity to find solutions.

As a yogi, a meditator and a stepmother, I also see the impact of technology on our selves, our relationships and on our children. We must think about how our children use these technologies and monitor whether we feel they are helping or harming our or their personal physical, spiritual and emotional wellbeing.

I believe this is an important book and I hope that others will take the time to read it and to examine their own relationship to technology, that of their families and, if relevant, in their work.

Overcoming a Deadly Connection
By dutch pie
This compellingly eloquent book is of immense importance for our society. Matt Richtel weaves together significant scientific research into the reasons for and effects of our powerful attachments to our cell phones with the poignant and complex true story of a particular deadly accident caused by a teenager who was texting while driving. Every person who owns a cell phone and drives a car should read this book and absorb the dire reasons why ANY use of a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle is potentially disastrous. Richtel's talent as a writer allows him to combine the emotional impact of the pathos of the story of the accident, which killed two talented scientists who were husbands and fathers and completely transformed the life of the youg driver who caused the accident, with the stark logos of undeniable scientific facts about the inability of our brains to focus effectively on more than one thing at a time and why we are so irresistably tied to our devices. Richtel moves our hearts and informs our intellects in order to get us to examine our own habits and reform them appropriately. The more people who read and respond to this amazing book, the safer our streets and highways will be.

Anne Finch and Her Poetry: A Critical Biography, by Barbara McGovern

Anne Finch and Her Poetry is the first major critical examination of the life and works of the foremost English woman poet of the eighteenth century. This biography places Anne Finch (1661-1720) in her social and literary milieu and includes discussion of such topics as love and marriage, female friendships, melancholy, and nature as they relate both to Finch's life and to her poetry.

Barbara McGovern gives considerable attention to the methods by which Finch developed her artistry and molded a largely masculine literary tradition to her own designs through a variety of rhetorical and stylistic devices. She examines the entire body of Finch's work, including two verse plays and a number of previously unpublished poems and letters, and corrects numerous misconceptions about the poet and her work.

Though recognized in her lifetime as a talented poet, for nearly two hundred years Finch has been overlooked or, when anthologized, misrepresented. McGovern focuses on the historical place and displacement of Finch in Restoration and early eighteenth-century England in terms of her involvement with Britain's most critical religious and political controversies. An Anglican and Royalist who along with her husband was attached to the Stuart court at the time of the Glorious Revolution, Finch was an outsider because of her politics and religion as well as her gender. Despite her marginal status in society, Anne Finch was able to develop her poetic identity in part by defining her relationships with other early women writers, including Katherine Philips and Aphra Behn. Her female friendships, as well as aristocratic family ties and titled position, gave her access to a number of the most famous literary figures of her age, including Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift.

A thoroughly researched, well-written, and compelling work, Anne Finch and Her Poetry will no doubt become the standard biography of the finest woman poet in England before the nineteenth century.

Idella: Marjorie Rawlings' Perfect Maid, by Idella Parker

"A warmhearted and insightful tribute to the author of Cross Creek and The Yearling, and it’s the story of Parker herself, a tough-minded Floridian devoted to her family. A charming book."--ALA Booklist

Idella Parker’s recollections of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings are as intimate and frank as their ten years together. This long-awaited memoir, by the black woman who was cook, housekeeper, and comfort to the famous author from 1940 to 1950, tells two stories--one of their spirited friendship, the other of race relations in rural Florida in the days before integration.

By turns kind and generous, moody and depressed, the Pulitzer Prize winning author emerges as a woman of contrasts--someone with "few friends and many visitors . . . who seldom smiled." Idella’s own life is part of this memoir, too, as she describes her courtship and marriage, her family lineage back to Nat Turner, and what it was life to grow up in a segregated society.

From Library Journal
This unique memoir tells the story of one black woman's experience as maid, cook, and confidante to noted writer Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. Set in North Florida in the 1940s, Idella deals openly and frankly with the ambiguous relationship between a white woman and her black retainer. Fascinating details of Rawlings's kindnesses (sometimes patronizing) as well as her drunken rages and depressions are interspersed with Parker's observations on race relations in the pre-Civil Rights Movement South. Although "ahead of her time" in her defense of Idella as "the perfect maid," Rawlings still viewed blacks as inferiors and never bridged the racial divide that separated her and Idella. This book provides an important and neglected perspective. Recommended for all major libraries.

From Booklist
Parker, with coauthor Keating, continues the story, begun in Idella (1992), of her 10-year stint--from 1940 to 1950--as cook and housekeeper for Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. Though the Pulitzer Prize^-winning author referred to Parker as "the perfect maid," their relationship was often troubled. Rawlings was strong-minded and impatient, qualities made worse by her growing alcohol dependency. Though an unsophisticated observer--Parker admits she had never heard of most of the famous guests who routinely visited the Cross Creek home--she does convey a vivid sense of her employer as a person who could be thoughtful one moment and utterly exasperating the next. By including chapters on her early life as well as the years with Rawlings, Parker also conveys an unsettling sense of the black experience in the rural south of the 1920s and 1930s. It will be difficult for contemporary readers to understand Parker's nostalgia for her youth when "we respected the `Whites Only' signs." In the end, Parker's feelings about segregation seem as conflicted as those for her late employer. Michael Cart

From the Back Cover
Idella Parker's recollections of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings are as intimate and frank as their ten years together. This long-awaited memoir, written by the black woman who was cook, housekeeper, and comfort to the famous author from 1940 to 1950, tells two stories - one of their spirited friendship, the other of race relations in rural Florida in the days before integration. Personal details - Marjorie's abandon behind the wheel of her cream-colored Oldsmobile, her boiled egg for breakfast, her shoe size, and her penchant for wearing mismatched ankle socks - accompany accounts of visits from Julia Scribner and Zora Neale Hurston, of Marjorie's unconventional marriage to Norton Baskin, and of their moves back and forth from Cross Creek to St. Augustine, Florida, and to Van Hornesville, New York. Idella describes Marjorie's work habits on the porch at Cross Creek - as time went by, she notes, a whiskey bottle, wrapped in a paper bag, often sat alongside the typewriter. By turns kind and generous, moody and depressed, Rawlings emerges as a woman of contrasts - someone "with few friends and many visitors . . . who seldom smiled". Promises to stop drinking were made and broken repeatedly, and Rawlings' emotional demands on Idella escalated. Idella quit working for her three times, leaving for good three years before Rawlings' death. "I loved her then, and I love her still, but what could I do?" she asks. Idella's own life is part of this memoir, too, as she describes her courtship and marriage, her family lineage back to Nat Turner, and what it was like to grow up in a segregated society.

the rest of the story!!
By Patricia Chambers
An avid fan of Majorie Kinnan Rawlings, and the Cross Creek scrub country she lived in, this book about/by Idella will round out your image of their life there. The only other way to add to this would be a visit to Marjorie's home, now a state park but kept in the genre of when she lived there, in Cross Creek, to spend time taking the tour of it, and with that bringing the feel of what you read in hers and Idellas books into your vision!!!

Mary Keating, who worked patiently with Idella, in Reddick, obviously had a talent for bringing out the little details, and and able to put them into a visionary scope!!

If you like Cross Creek you will love Idella
By Chichi
I am African American and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings is one of my favorite authors. I loved Cross Creek and she is an excellent writer. However, I had to understand the times in which this book was written also I had to overlook demeaning remarks. If you can look pass these occasional remarks and see the dignity assigned to Martha Pickens and old Will, see the difference between truths and prejudices, relate to the author's life, you will enjoy Cross Creek. NOW, read Idella: Marjorie Rawlings' Perfect Maid and you won't be able to put it down. Miss Idella was a woman of her times and I felt I was reading about the lives of my grandmother, great grandmother and aunts. She gave me pieces of history left out by my relatives. I use to love for them to talk about their lives and the history and legacy given to me by them is priceless. Miss Idella wrote/told her story well and gave me a perspective I could relate to 100 percent. A must read!--full of pictures of her and her lovely family :)

Read "Cross Creek" First, Then Read What Rawlings Left Out ...
By squiggysmom
I loved this book. Idella greatly fleshes out and explains many of the indcidents in Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings "Cross Creek" while adding her own perspectives that dovetail perfectly. Idella helps us have just a taste of what it meant to be a black housemaid in the South in the early 1930s. Especially insightful are the glimpses into the racism she endure from the white people she served- all along having to smile and remain silent. Idella was a proud and intelligent woman, who in one anecdote, told how she refused to mend Mrs. Rawlings's dress on her one day off- Sunday- a day that she always included church and socializing with friends.

My dad's uncle, Fred Tompkins, was a good friend of Marjorie Rawlings, and he is mentioned several times in her books- so I have a great interest in them.
