About the Author
Matthew Restall is Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of Latin American History at Pennsylvania State University. His areas of specialization include colonial Yucatan and Mexico, Maya history, the Spanish Conquest and Africans in Spanish America. Since 1995 he has published some forty articles and essays and a dozen books, including The Black Middle: Africans, Mayas, and Spaniards in Colonial Yucatan (2009); Mesoamerican Voices (Cambridge University Press, 2005); and Seven Myths of the Spanish Conquest (2003). Professor Restall also serves as co-editor of the journal Ethnohistory.
Kris Lane is Professor of History at the College of William and Mary in Virginia. He has published widely on slavery, witchcraft, mining and piracy in the Andes region of South America and is the author or editor of multiple books, including Defense of the Western Conquests (2010), Colour of Paradise: Emeralds in the Age of Gunpowder Empires (2010) and Quito 1599: City and Colony in Transition (2002). Professor Lane has served as Visiting Professor at the National University of Colombia, Bogot�, and the University of Leiden, Netherlands, and currently edits the interdisciplinary journal Colonial Latin American Review.

A Rather Limited Introduction

This is a textbook for undergraduates and, from what is said within the book, for undergraduates on introductory courses. As a textbook, it has some good points: it is laid out logically with plenty of maps and illustrations, and frequent "focus boxes" to summarise the salient points as an aid to revision. On the negative side, it presents a single, rather basic, narrative with little attempt to explore different interpretations, and its suggestions for further reading are limited, particularly in relation to the Hispanic kingdoms and Africa. The book's writing style is also quite dull: generally short simple sentences, and a rather clumsy presentation when it tries to deal with complexities. It is adequate for conveying information, but not for bringing the subject to life.
Part One of the book is an introduction with a chapter each for pre-Colombian South America, the Iberian kingdoms and western Africa. The first, on South America seems to be a reasonable introduction, although the late date and single route given for the peopling of North and South America seem questionable. The chapter on the Iberian kingdoms seems superficial, as to a lesser extent does that on western Africa. These two chapters are not well constructed and, as they are at the start of the book, they give a poor impression of the credibility of the whole.
Part Two of the book deals with the European conquest and Part Four with Late Colonial times and Independence respectively; Part Three deals with Colonial Society between these times, the "Colonial Middle". These contain a fairly full introductory survey of Colonial Latin America. However, they do betray the interests of the two writers. Matthew Restall's interests include Mexico and Central America, and Africans in Spanish America; Kris Lane is interested in the Andean region and marginal social groups. A wide zone of Latin America from Argentina, through Brazil to Venezuela and the Caribbean islands is under-represented. They are not ignored but most of the detailed examples given are Mexican or Andean. Although at the time of the European conquest, these were the most populous parts of Latin America, this was no longer true later on. The prominence given to Africans, in Spanish America as well as Brazil, and the chapters on resistance to colonial rule and on deviancy from expected behaviour in religion and morals correct the past tendency to ignore them. However, (as with the regional focus on Mexico and the Andean region), it may distort the overall balance of what, as an introductory text, should give due weight to all sectors. Part Four on the transition from late Colonial rule to Independence is quite short and does not really explain how the independent Latin America states were shaped by a combination of late Colonial structures and the course of the independence struggle. In addition, where it deals with the effects of European conflicts in the 18th and early 19th centuries on Latin America, its comments on those European conflicts are at best alarmingly simplistic and at worst plain inaccurate.
Overall, the book was quite disappointing, and in part this is because it was published by Cambridge University Press. I would generally expect a higher standard for textbooks from that imprint.

Well written but its focus is too unbalanced

A well written summary of colonial Latin American history by a rigorous historian, but the focus on Mexico and Central America is too strong. The Spanish conquest of the Andean region, the Portuguese inroads into Brazil and other smaller expeditions are all fitted into one chapter to a whole chapter for Cortes and Mexico. Chasteen's "Born in Blood & Fire" remains a better and more well-rounded introduction to the history of this period.

Interesting, but lacks clarity

The included stories were interesting, however, I felt like I was reading a brain dump rather than cohesive stories with a timeline. The writing in each section seemed to jump back and forth, included far too many irrelevant individuals, and lacked structure. At times I had to ask myself if I was reading the correct section because the title and the content seemed very different.
