Hellspawn, by Ricky Fleet

10.35 AM, September 14th 2015. Portsmouth, England.
A global particle physics experiment releases a pulse of unknown energy with catastrophic results. Scientists in their laboratories search desperately for a solution to the broken fabric of existence, but they are already too late, the sanctity of the grave has been sundered.
There is no virus or bacteria to combat, just chaos and horror as a million graveyards expel their tenants from eternal slumber. The world is unaware of the impending apocalypse, realisation only dawns with the appearance of the mouldering corpses who devour everything they encounter. Governments crumble and armies are scattered to the wind.
Kurt Taylor, a self-employed plumber, witnesses the start of the horrifying outbreak. Desperate to reach his family before they fall victim to the ever growing horde of shambling corruption, he flees the scene, watching the unfolding cannibalism and destruction in his rear view mirror.
In a society with few guns, how can people hope to survive the endless waves of zombies that seek to consume every living thing? With ingenuity, planning and everyday materials, the group forge their way and strike back at the Hellspawn legions. Rescues are mounted, but not all survivors are benevolent. The evil that is in all men has been given free rein in this new, dead world. With both the living and dead to contend with, is there any hope for the Taylor family?

About the Author
Ricky Fleet has been a lifelong horror fan ever since he was (almost) old enough to watch the original Romero trilogy. Those shambling horrors gave birth to an insatiable appetite that has yet to be sated. After spending years in the plumbing trade, he then decided to start teaching, passing on his knowledge to the next generation of engineers. Born and raised in the UK, cups of tea are a non-negotiable staple of the English life and serve as brain fuel for his first love, writing. Today he shares his time between his real life students, and the students of the zombie apocalypse in his first series: Hellspawn. At least the fictional students do as they’re told. Most of the time anyway.

A Unique Zombie Tale
By Dawnzilla
Zombie stories are a dime a dozen and in order for a book to stand out in my mind, it has to not only be different, it has to be very different. Hellspawn fits the bill. There is no zombie virus scientists are trying to find a cure for. Hellspawn sees the dead rising from the graveyards and by the time science can try to come up with an answer, it’s already too late.

The book follows the Taylors, a family in Portsmouth, England, trying to survive hell on earth. The family is not perfect and they certainly don’t have all the answers. They are realistically flawed which makes you cheer for them when they succeed and feel horrible when they fail. Not only do the Taylors have to face zombies, they have to fight against other humans, the worst kind of humans, just to survive.

For a first novel, Hellspawn is a solid piece of zombie fiction. I only discovered a couple of small mistakes while reading, showing this author took the time to hire a great editor, a step many new authors need to take. The story flows well and releases many emotions in the reader, and with a second book in the works, Ricky Fleet has a winner on his hands.

Oh, keep an eye out for Mrs. Humes. I think you’ll love her. I know I did and if the author kills her, I will have to fly to England to inflict bodily harm.

Overall, Hellspawn is a fast-paced thrill thrill ride that is just unique enough to stand out from the crowd.

great twist on the zombe genre
By Patricia statham
The first I heard of this book from a good friend of mine. She told me I had to read, so I did . Boy I was glad I listened to her . I couldn't put this book down . It is such a good twist on the zombie tale . Showing us how the beginning of the apocalypse and how one family stayed alive .

The author has taken the zombie apocalypse and put a fresh twist on it . He took a day in the lives of one family and basically put them through hell as they try and stay alive . But guess what all the evil things in this world aren't the undead, there are people that are still alive that are wanting to hurt them. I couldn't believe some of the things this poor family went through, the perils are great and the tension is so thick . You want them to survive so much , you are cheering for them with every thing they defeat .

The characters are so complex and so flawed at the same time . There is a story within the story of here . What would you do if you were trapped in the apocalypse with your school bully? What would you do when you have some father / son unresolved emotions that are simmering at the surface? What would you do when you feel utter despair when you have to keep your family safe and alive? These questions are all answered with these characters. Kurt is your everyday man, who works hard for a living . When he has to keep his family safe, you see him take control and help everyone one out. I have to say my all time favorite character is Mrs. Humes , she is one gutsy lady and the way she handles herself is what I want when I grow up. She also adds a bit of comic relief when things are getting way to tense. She is a sweet character that I hope and pray makes it all the way through.

This book had me screaming one moment then bawling my eyes out in the next . There is one part in the book that I could hardly read because the tears were streaming down my face. It was so sad all I could do was ugly cry. I was sitting on the edge of my chair most of the time and the other times I had the blanket pulled over my head. I cheered with every inventive way they came up with to kill the masses . Some of them were very ingenious and who knew that a table and nails would be such a good tool. The sign of a great book is how many emotions that a person goes through when reading . Mr. Fleet brought out those emotions with great ease. You are taken on a ride with so many twists and turns. Ultimately this a story of survival and one family's love for each other and what they would do to be safe . I can't wait till book two . So if you want a fresh twist on the start of the zombie apocalypse and one family's survival . Check it out you won't be disappointed .

Hellspawn is one of the most complex zombie book that i ever read !
By alina harajuku zombie
Gore, Action, Romero style Zombies, Family Drama ! The best zombie book in a long time !
I am a fan of the Zombie genre, i read manny of the books that are out there and i tell you that Hellspawn has the potential to stand next to the bigges and most loved series of the genre.
This book has a few of the most bloody and gore filled scenes that i ever read. You can alsmost smell the putrid Zombies, and the emerald green blood of the infected that try to reach the stranded Family and just wants to sinck there teeth into the juicy flesh of the living.
It is not only that the book is filled with action, zombies and gore, and that your heart will skip a beat a few times, and you will hope that everything will be all right . This book also looks into the more complex family relationships, the love and feeling of competition btw father and son, the love of a husband for hs wife and family.
I also find it cool that the action is located in the UK, so there are no fire weapons available in each household, and the Taylor Family has to be inventive in order to survive.
I can't wait for the Sequel!

Holocaust Representation: Art within the Limits of History and Ethics, by Berel Lang

Since Theodor Adorno's attack on the writing of poetry "after Auschwitz," artists and theorists have faced the problem of reconciling the moral enormity of the Nazi genocide with the artist's search for creative freedom. In Holocaust Representation, Berel Lang addresses the relation between ethics and art in the context of contemporary discussions of the Holocaust. Are certain aesthetic means or genres "out of bounds" for the Holocaust? To what extent should artists be constrained by the "actuality" of history―and is the Holocaust unique in raising these problems of representation?

The dynamics between artistic form and content generally hold even more intensely, Lang argues, when art's subject has the moral weight of an event like the Holocaust. As authors reach beyond the standard conventions for more adequate means of representation, Holocaust writings frequently display a blurring of genres. The same impulse manifests itself in repeated claims of historical as well as artistic authenticity. Informing Lang's discussion are the recent conflicts about the truth-status of Benjamin Wilkomirski's "memoir" Fragments and the comic fantasy of Roberto Benigni's film Life Is Beautiful. Lang views Holocaust representation as limited by a combination of ethical and historical constraints. As art that violates such constraints often lapses into sentimentality or melodrama, clich or kitsch, this becomes all the more objectionable when its subject is moral enormity. At an extreme, all Holocaust representation must face the test of whether its referent would not be more authentically expressed by silence―that is, by the absence of representation.

Review

Holocaust Representation tackles the thorny subject of ethics and art as they bear on works commemorating or referring to the Holocaust.

(James Malpas Art Newspaper)

Berel Lang has achieved in these essays a remarkable and compelling piece of philosophical literary criticism. He aims for nothing less than a demonstration that writings on the Holocaust, however imaginative, cannot escape the form or fact of the history of that event. There is, in this unique case, an internal relationship between truth and poetic representation. It is a powerful and sobering analysis of the limits of art.

(Arthur C. Danto, Columbia University)

With his profound philosophical grasp of both aesthetic and ethical issues at play in Holocaust literature and art, Berel Lang brings great clarity to the very difficult and complex issues surrounding Holocaust representation―whether by survivors or by the next generation.

(James E. Young, University of Massachusetts, Amherst)

Displaying at once the intellectual precision of a philosopher, the verbal sensitivity of a literary critic, and the concreteness of a historian, Berel Lang has produced an immensely appealing book that will attract readers throughout the humanities. Holocaust Representation brilliantly rethinks and redirects that flourishing new genre, the book about Holocaust writing.

(Herbert Lindenberger, Stanford University)

Berel Lang offers a compellingly original, subtle, and provocative meditation on those historical and ethical constraints that invariably limit the representation of the 'unrepresentable,' the speaking of the 'unspeakable.' Joining philosophical inquiry and historical analysis, literary criticism and art history, Lang presents a new interpretation of the 'blurring'―of literary genres, of artistic forms, of historical discourses, of stylistic conventions―that, in the afterwards of history and memory, extreme trauma imposes on representation.

(Richard Stamelman, Williams College)

Berel Lang's writings on Holocaust representations reveal the broad range of aesthetic and ethical complexities that define this important subject. Lang's essays, historically informed and critically astute, warrant and will amply reward the most careful reading.

(Alvin H. Rosenfeld, Indiana University)

About the Author

Berel Lang is a professor of humanities at Trinity College. His many books include Writing and the Moral Self, Mind's Bodies: Thought in the Act, Heidegger's Silence, and Act and Idea in the Nazi Genocide.

Fire: Nature and Culture (Reaktion Books - Earth), by Stephen J. Pyne

For over 400 million years, fire has been an integral force on our planet. It can be as innocent as a bonfire or as destructive and lethal as a wildfire. Human history is rife with fires that have leveled cities—the Fire of Moscow in 1812 that destroyed seventy-five percent of the city, the Great Chicago Fire in 1871 that took down 17,000 buildings, and the fire that obliterated San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake are just a few. Fire is a force of nature that can consume everything in its wake, and yet it also has tremendous powers of cleansing and renewal. At the end of the day, we can’t live without it.In Fire, Stephen J. Pyne offers a concise history of fire and its use by humanity, explaining how fire has been at the core of hunting, foraging, farming, herding, urbanizing, and managing nature reserves. He depicts how it gave humans power in ancient times, which resulted in humanity beginning to reshape the world for its own benefit. He describes how fire was used by aboriginal societies and the ways agricultural societies added control over fuel, but warns that our mastery of the science and art of fire has not given us complete control—fire disasters throughout history have defined cultures, and unexpected fires that begin as the result of other disasters have shocking effects. Pyne traces fire’s influence on landscapes, art, science, and even climate, exploring the power a simple spark has over our imaginations.Lavishly illustrated with a host of rare and unexpected images, Fire is a sizzling and accessible tale of our relationship with this primal natural force.

Fire, fire everywhere
By lyndonbrecht
This is a title in Reaktion Book's "Earth" series, which I stumbled across by accident and have read all of. The publisher is British. Pyne, who is American, is probably the best known scholar of wildfire. This is not his best book but it's solid and an interesting read.

His approach may strike some readers as odd. This book is organized around the theme that fire is life--breathing is a kind of fire. Fire, says Pyne, is a product of life. Slow fire in living cells, enclosed fire in industrial processes, fires burning in forests. Without fire, no life. Sections include fires depicted; fires in history and so on. It is excellently illustrated. The illustrations are not just of wildfire, but paintings and depictions of fire--hellfire, fire as a force of nature, fire on the home hearth. This book considers cultural understandings of fire such as metaphor and legend, as well as fire being a phenomenon of nature.

Pyne is a fine writer and the topic is oddly interesting, although readers looking for a history of fires or how fires are fought will not find the book as interesting as people interested in things like the use of iconic images in the arts would. He does cover famous fires such as the famous Chicago fire, but as one part of several.

This is an interesting read, but I found it somewhat less satisfying than other books in the series, and especially not as good as other books by Pyne. I think it may be because he overdoes the fire-is-life trope. His point is well worth reading about, because I suspect, most people don't really think about the similarities of the fire in their own lungs and the fire in their car's engine.

Basic good read for non-fire thinkers. Covers the range and history of fire in snapshots. Did not spark any insight or passion.
