Inspiring Stories, Useful Format

If we dare to create, fear and uncertainty become bedfellows. So how can we work through those emotions and thrive? In this book, Jonathan Fields' uses stories and research to chart an answer. His suggestions don't break new ground, but he assembles them in a useful and inspiring format. Here's the gist (headings correspond to chapters):

FIND YOUR CERTAINTY ANCHORS

"Certainty Anchor" is Jonathan's catch-phrase for a ritual or schedule. One example: Work (create, practice, write) in bursts and pauses. Go for no more than 45 to 90 minutes. Exercise, meditate, nap. Work again.

BUILD YOUR HIVE

They're not just cheerleaders, they give honest (but gentle) feedback. Specifically, your Hive can help you shift your focus to learning and away from traffic, sales or profits, and explore a minimum viable product (MVP) that you can release and gather feedback to fold into the next iteration.

The most important thing about a hive: "One person's success isn't necessarily another person's loss. There is no zero-sum game."

TRAIN YOUR BRAIN

Engage in what Fields' calls attentional training: exercise, meditation, visualization, specifically process visualization: "If you're a writer, visualize yourself putting your notebook or pad in your bag, walking to your favorite café, choosing your table, ordering your favorite beverage, spending a few minutes reviewing handwritten notes, then opening your current creation and writing X words or for X minutes or hours."

Not surprisingly, exercise mitigates uncertainty because it changes the brain, tamping down the amygdala's fear and anxiety signals.

OWN THE STORYLINE

To overcome fear and uncertainty about your path, ask yourself three questions:

1. What if I go to zero? What would happen if you failed completely?

2. What if I Do Nothing? Fields maintains "there is no way to move sideways in life. Not in relationships, not in business, not in spiritual growth, not in the quest to build something brilliant from nothing. There's only up or down." He points out that if any of the following are left unaddressed over time: nagging pain becomes chronic; unrewarding work becomes soulless; your currently "passable" life becomes increasingly painful as you enter the long, slow slide toward death.

3. What if I Succeed? Create your own storyline of success.

CONCLUSION

Does Fields say anything we haven't heard before? Isn't a Certainty Anchor just a ritual or schedule? A Hive another name for network? Meditation and exercise obvious ways to overcome fear and anxiety?

It's not new information. But Fields connects the dots with individual stories, helps analyze what's holding you back, and inspires you to do something about it. His portrait of "What if I do nothing?" is chilling. He includes chapter summaries, something I wish all nonfiction books would do. Plus, I just like the word Hive. All and all, a good read.

The Writing Style Is A Little Inaccessible For My Tastes. Interesting Ideas, Though.

I first ran across Jonathan Fields on his blog and was impressed by his giving heart and generous spirit. So I was interested to read his take on overcoming the fear we all have when beginning something new.

To his credit, the book is not just a collection of blog posts cobbled together to make a few bucks. Yet, after the Introduction and first few chapters my mind began to wander.

It seems Fields is writing to an audience that wouldn't normally pick up a personal development/self-help type book. The title itself is a bit hyperbolic. Surely, most people would be happy with outcomes less than "brilliant". This continues into the body of the book where he writes about "creators" and their "creations" in the same way most people might think of producers and products. After all, since marketability is a goal isn't most of what we "create" really a product. Surely, even a product of our imagination doesn't have to be couched in such lofty terms.

Jonathan is a good writer but the language makes the book a little inaccessible, at least to me.

His case studies also seemed a little inaccessible. Most of them are what some people refer to as Renaissance Men (or Women). It's not enough that they are clearly successful in one field, they also seem to excel in several others and, of course, they all have the epiphany that there must be something more. They feel unchallenged, unfulfilled. So they go out and start (create) something new. It helps that the success they've enjoyed before starting over has probable given them plenty of money to take chances without worrying too much about paying the bills.

Finally, some of the advice in this book is eons old wrapped in the language of the Web 2.0 twenty or 30 something trying to find themselves. Routine and ritual become certainty anchors, surrounding yourself with positive, like minded people becomes finding mentors, heroes and champions. Even Jonathan's interesting visions of co-creation through feedback loops or co-working environments might be considered as developing a mastermind group. Oh, and focus? You get that through Attention Training (AT) aka meditation.

As I progressed through the book, I began to like it more and more. It does have some interesting ideas and the author has obviously done his research. So if you'd like a book that provides a path on your journey to bringing your creation to market, this is a good place to start.

Not the greatest.

Before reading this book I had already read Making Ideas Happen (Belsky), The Lean Startup (Ries), Crossing the Chasm (Moore), and browsed through Do More Faster (Feld, Cohen).

I found Uncertainty leaning a little heavy on ideas, and examples, from the above books. I'm not implying plagarism, just unoriginality. Credit is given where due, but more for the purposes of a survey than as acknowledging the basis for synthesis.

However, parts of the book still made it a worthwhile purchase for me; Chapter 4, "Certainty Anchors," chapter 7, "Train Your Brain," and chapter 8, " See The Forest," served to reinforce the value of certain behaviors I have already semi-incorporated into my life. So for sparking the resolve to fully incorporate those behaviors the value of the book has been realized for me.

Where the previously mentioned books contain real business methods, which were of substantially more value to me, this book takes a general self-help psychology approach. Finally, the veiled disclaimer on page 190 from the, attorney, author felt uncomfortable.

To sum up, because I was able to synthesize I found value in the book and give it three stars. As a stand-alone read it probably would get 2 or 2.5.

It was quick read and I enjoyed reading it because I wanted to know more about Russia as well as how USA culture differ from Russian culture."Clash of Cultures : Russia vs USA" by Oleg Malikov is beautifully written with a variety graphic illustration, photos and very insightful . This book gives clear understanding of the Russian culture, traditions, and language comparing to USA. Most importantly little more about why Russians act the way they do. Although a bit basic, this is a nice first-person introduction into contemporary Russian life. I personally could use more insight and detail, especially considering the author is a native Russian relatively fresh from the country, but I suppose that for someone trying to familiarize themselves with Russian culture and everyday life this is a good primer. Enlighting

This was an interesting perspective on Russian and American life through the eyes of Oleg Malikov. I love facts and appreciate that he backed up a lot of the information he presented with quotes and figures. I found the chapter on women particularly interesting and enlighting. I definitely walked away feeling like I have more insight on what it is like to move to a different country. It makes me wonder what my aunts, uncles and grandparents must have experienced in their transition to a new place.

so familiar to me ... Armah captures my interest . Using his large brush the author
paints on a canvas that already has many scenes.. Adding weaving and coloring .. I

About the Author
I have been writing plays since high school and acting since junior high. In 1988, my first play "Nicolas Brooks" had instant success by winning the Youth Division at the Spokane Civic Theatre Forum Festival in Washington State. The writing bug infected me and I decided to form my own little theatre group in 1989 called Tailors of the Imagination. At 17, I produced and directed an extended version of "Nicolas Brooks" called "Who Loves a Writer" as well as a retelling of Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde. In 1990, my play "A Man and His Plant" was produced at the Spokane Civic Theatre Forum Festival in the adult division. The play went on to win third place in a national contest and then was published by the Dramatic Publishing Company as a part of an anthology "Short Stuff for Mature Actors." In New Mexico, I started a theatre group called the Poco Loco Players which have successfully produced four seasons including several plays that I co-wrote with the other Poco Loco Players. I also started the successful website called freedrama.com which has provided free plays to schools and community groups around the world. My 2002 victory as a writer was being included in the Love Creek Production's play festival in New York City. My monologue "Pearls of Wisdom" is the true story of the struggles young women face growing up in rural Idaho. Another success was a 2004 midwest tour of my play "The Redneck" (renamed Operation Redneck) by the professional theatre group Retroact Productions. During this time, freedrama.com became very popular receiving thousands of visitors. My plays on freedrama.com (now freedrama.net) have been performed on every continent including Antarctica. I'm now involved in developing film projects as a writer and producer. In 2008, I started a new series about War Veterans. The series has been featured by Apple iTunes and YouTube. The most successful episode has been "Saving Lives in World War II" which won an Emmy Award in 2009 for best Advanced Media Historical Documentary (Rocky Mountain Region). In 2010, I won a Telly Award for my full length documentary about a wildlife park in Arizona. And in 2011, I won a second Emmy Award for my short documentary about an organization called Paws and Stripes that helps veterans with PTSD using service dogs.

In 1977, in an environment hostile to women's rights and secularism, a 20-year-old woman named Meena founded RAWA to empower Afghan women and promote democracy in Afghanistan (in 1987, Meena was murdered by RAWA's opponents). Community psychologist Brodsky's groundbreaking account studies this important organization's evolution from an 11-member student group to the most powerful voice for women in Afghanistan, with thousands of volunteers. Heavily sprinkled with perceptive interviews, the book relays RAWA's story through the voices of its members and supporters, skillfully bringing to life those whose sacrifices have sustained the organization. About the Author
Anne E. Brodsky is Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology and Women's Studies at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. She is an expert on women and resiliency. Her accounts of RAWA have appeared in the The Washington Post and In These Times and she has been working with RAWA for more than two years.

The women beyond the burqa

This is a timely and important illustration of the history of the struggle of the women of Afghanistan. Brodsky describes a "cosmopolitan" Afghanistan that many Westerners are unaware once existed. Once, a society where 40% of all medical doctors were women, Afghanistan disintegrated into a feudal society dominated by the Soviet occupation in the late 1970's and various fundamentalist regime changes (including the Taliban) throughout the next 20 years.
Brodsky's book is a powerful response to the influx of burqa-dominated books that hit the market last year in the wake of 9/11. While books on the subject of Afghan women over the past year have focused primarily on the burqa as the ultimate image of oppression, Brodsky's book expands this narrow view as she depicts the life and death struggles of women who have fought (and continue to fight) a slow but persistent battle to gain basic human rights in a fundamentalist society that views them as worth half that of a man. In fact, Brodsky shines some light on the history of the burqa noting that in some cultures it is a woman's choice whether or not to wear burqa - a topic not adequately addressed by other books currently on the market.

Set in motion prior to the events of 9/11, Brodsky began this project in early 2001 with the goal of documenting the struggles of RAWA through the scope of resilience studies. As the U.S. led attack on the Taliban brought heavy media attention to Afghan women, Brodsky picked up the pace of her research and has produced a timely book that will attract a wide range of educated, politically conscious readers.
With All Our Strength opens with a riveting (if revolting) depiction of the execution of a 35 year-old women in a sports stadium in Kabul. Accused of murdering her husband, Zarmeena is led to the stadium in burqa where she is forced to kneel before the assembled city and is executed. Her execution is portrayed as a warning to the women of Kabul. RAWA members managed to videotape the execution in secret - had they been discovered, their fate would have no doubt been the same.
And so goes this appalling account of life in Afghanistan. Though the history is somewhat repetitive at times, Brodsky's strength lies in effectively balancing Afghanistan's history with personal accounts of RAWA members and succeeds in creating an engaging and informative narrative that will leave readers demanding action.
A book you should read and pass on. The website also provides invaluable information - though you should be prepared for a very graphic encounter.

Brodsky does RAWA an enormous service

I have been a supporter of RAWA for four years, and thought I knew a lot about the organization, until I got my hands on this book. All of the questions that I have had over the years have been answered here, and then some! Brodsky's analysis and background information fill in the gaps for me in ways that nothing else has to date. I have read many books on Afghanistan, Afghan women, and even the other recent books that focus on RAWA, but this book is my best source yet. For anyone interested in helping this magificent organization, this book is a MUST read. I have given this book to family members and friends as gifts so that they may understand why RAWA is so important to me. I urge everyone who is even remotely concerned with women who resist to read this book. You will not be able to help but love RAWA and their spirit of resistance and strength. I thank Anne Brodsky for this enormous gift of information. Her contribution is truly in the spirit of RAWA, and I cannot encourage enough people to read it and to help these valiant women in their life-changing, tremendous work. If ever an organization deserved the attention of people all over the world, this is the one!

Excellent book on RAWA and Women in Afghanistan

While there are a couple other books about RAWA, this one really stands out. It is thoughtful, thorough, well documented, and very readable, with excellent interview excerpts and stories. It explains a great deal that has never been available before about this amazing, all-volunteer, indigenous, pro-democracy, afghan women's group and how they have been able to build such an effective organization under such terrible circumstances in Afghanistan. RAWA has sometimes been mis-characterized, and this book corrects those misconceptions as well as discussing why it is sometimes depicted wrongly. It also very well describes the various facets of RAWA's work and organization, as well as the human side of their work and lives. Therefore, in addition to being an engrossing and useful account of RAWA, it tells and important and usually neglected slice of recent Afghan history...that of women. The book and RAWA itself are also an excellent example of organizing for change that could be useful across the globe. Worth reading!

Great book! Let your imagination go wild!

Brilliant! The author is a skilled writer and she knows how to take your imagination to the next level.

If you're looking for something short and some "hot shifter sex" and you're team Jacob (from Twilight) then you won't have to look any further. This is probably in the head of Jacob when he's with Bella, but instead, this book gives it a thrilling tension between Bridget and Varo (the characters in the book).

Chosen by the alpha but the pack agrees.
She is a bartender and on her walk home under a full moon after her shift she hears something.
She has heard the rumor of wolves being close, so she tries to get home quick.

She doesn't make it and he wolves are a bit different than she thought they would be, at least the alpha.
She knows him from the bar and is attracted to him.
And he has chosen her as his mate and takes this to the next hot level under the eyes of his pack.

Pity the story stops there, I would have liked to read more about them together

I really wanted to like this story but kept getting distracted by the poor ...

I really wanted to like this story but kept getting distracted by the poor use of the English language. Also, the author kept switching character descriptors. In one sentence the character would be called "she". In the next she would be "the bartender", "Bridget" or "the redhead".
Here is an example the author's writing style: "She did her usual song and dance of flirting with Varo, which gave her little information about the man but left her stomach in knots, served some drinks and had a generally fine night."
Short thought it was, I could not finish it.
