A pioneer in the field of visual communication, Rand developed a fresh and individual design language drawn from European art movements including Russian constructivism, de Stijl, and the Bauhaus. His career as an art director, teacher, writer, and design consultant to major corporations spanned almost seven decades. Rand arguably got his start at the tender of 3 when he first began to secretly copy pictures of the attractive Palmolive models pictured in advertising displays in his father's grocery store in Brooklyn, New York. About the Author
Steven Heller is the art director of the NY Times Book Review and co-chair of the MFA Design program at the School of Visual Arts. He is the editor of the AIGA online journal, VOICE. He is a contributing editor to PRINT, EYE, Baseline, and ID. He writes frequently for Metropolis and other design magazines. He is author, co-author, and editor of over 90 books on design and popular culture.

George Lois, a native New Yorker, joined Doyle Dane Bernbach as an art director in 1958 and started his first agency in 1960. He is the recipient of an AIGA Gold Medal, among other honours, and the author of two books on advertising. He continues to consult for major corporations.

Jessica Helfand is a partner at Winterhouse, a design collaborative in New England, and a founding editor of "Design Observer," She teaches in the graduate program in graphic design at Yale University and has written several books on design and cultural criticism. She lives in Falls Village, CT.

Buy a Magnifying Glass

This is a pretty thorough book on a graphic design icon. Unfortunately, the book is typeset very poorly in an 8pt serif font. Reading more than a few pages at a time strains your eyes and results in a headache - ironic considering Rand was a firm believer in usable design.

Lots of full color samples of Rand's work to coincide with the text, which is nice.

Overall, this book is a great resource. It's too bad the type is so difficult to read.

A good work about a great designer

Paul Rand was a giant among designers, and one of the key reasons that graphic design exists as a profession in the United States. Heller, obviously a great Rand fan and friend(not to mention a prolific author), has given his subject his due, tracing Rand's evolution as an artist and the arc of his career. From a 1942 Autocar annual report whose design is astonishingly current to some work for Dubonnet that perhaps hasn't stood the test of time as well, Heller's choices of accompanying materials is excellent, illustrating as well as telling Rand's core philosophies: Effective graphic design is straightforward, purposed, and well-reasoned. This is a straightforward, well-assembled book that falls short in two very minor ways: While much is made of Rand's European influences, none of this work appears in the book, and select examples rather than just mention of Rand's contemporaries would have done a better job of placing his work in a more historical context.

Fresh, Interesting and Inspiring

I bought this book a while ago and it was sitting on my shelf for months - but once I finally opened it I couldn't put it down. It's written in a simple and informative manner that gives me a taste of not only Paul but the times that he lived in, his professional contemporaries and parallel design trends.
I read this book with an iPad right next to me constantly Googeling artists and books that the writer is mentioning. It's is more of a journey into an era than just story or biography - and as a designer I feel inspired. My creative juices are flowing and fresh ideas filling my minds eye.
The format of the book is great, and the paper quality is superb.
I had to take one star off because some of the images are tiny for no apparent reason.
But other then this it's a highly recommended book!

interesting book!

Being fairly new to eye tracking I found this book an interesting read actually. It starts off by covering the history (of the research) of seeing/watching/looking to then continue with the biological and psychological aspects of looking at things, extrapolated to eye tracking today.

Eventually the book will start talking about all sorts of technical stuff halfway part II of the book, that I as an Interaction Designer am less interested in, but then in part III and IV the book gets interesting again.

Not a lot about HCI or marketing side of eye tracking, but as a whole the book gives the reader a pretty good idea of what eye tracking can be useful for.

Excellent introductory handbook

This is an excellent introductory handbook to eye tracking. It has a wide coverage, from eye physiology and visual psychophysics to eye tracking hardware and programming to results evaluation and applications. The theoretical discussions are grounded in practical concerns; the level of detail is sufficient for grasping topics and discussions of further readings close each section; hands-on advices permeate the personal experience of the author and his writing style is lively.

A Must Have In Your Bookshelf

On the shoulders of the sociologist who stood before him, Gergen’s An Invitation to Sociological Construction shows how systems work and influence the people surrounded by those systems; it is an enriching experience for the readers through both it context and content. Its context is educational and transformational and its content is understandable to inexperienced or experienced readers on concepts related to sociology.

Gergen takes his views one step further than did other contemporary sociologists. Gergen shows how language influences sociology; words influence sociology (not only what we say, but how we say it). Gergen advocates for a comprehensive awareness that all do not necessarily have the capacity to attain. Looking at the world through a theoretical sociological lens, Gergen is able to utilize his previous work in Psychology and Sociology to explain many of the paradigms we see in the world today.

I enjoy the way that Gergen constructed his analyses; it feels like Gergen is having a conversation with the reader, rather than just a lecture-method of authorship. This is a book that I will remember for a long time, and will certainly keep on my bookshelf, as Gergen’s work can be extrapolated to encompass a variety of sociological and psychological concepts (ones he specifically discussed and others he did not). Gergen is an intellectual, a professor, and researcher-- this particular work will (arguably) become one of the books that Kenneth Gergen is most known for having written.

How to design and create an educational course

This book covers all the elements needed to create and design learning courses for adults. It is very detailed and academic in its writing style and structure. I would have preferred a more casual writing style. However the content and process is here whether you want to design an e-course, personal interest course, or a work shop. The books shows how to take a student through the complete process of learning a subject from start to finish, I believe this could even be used in colleges and tech schools for course design and implementation. Not an easy read but well worth the effort.

Creating Courses for Adults, curriculum prerequisite

As a former successful adult education instructor for a variety of writing courses, I enthusiastically awaited for the arrival of Creating Courses for Adults: Design for Learning by Ralf St. Clair. I felt this book would help me brush up on my skills to re-enter the classroom arena.

Once the book arrived, admittedly, I found it difficult to read through what I found to be someone dry, textbook-like material. The trick was, once I pushed through the drab text, I discovered a hodgepodge of practical information. In essence, Professor St. Clair offers a comprehensive perspective into the world of adult education and addresses nearly everything you need to navigate your way to success.

One thing I beg to differ with is when the author writes, "One influential factor is the educator's own educational experience. Somebody who did well at school when she was young, tended to be friendly with teachers, and enjoyed reading and writing will have a particular view of teaching and learning. An educator who disliked school, was uncomfortable with the authority of teachers, and hated sitting still at a desk will have a very different perspective."

I, for one, had far too many teachers who were self-indulged, incompetent, bias and really should not have been training show dogs, let alone children. Granted this was many moons ago in affluent Fairfield, Connecticut, but if you didn't conform to the preppy look, didn't excel in academics or sports, these teachers wouldn't give you the time of day. Not only did they flunk teaching, they perpetuated bullying in the classroom--which is another story.

Despite these teacher's inadequate methods of teaching, I, with an insatiable thirst for knowledge, virtually taught myself everything. I feel I am an exceptional teacher because I had a less than optimal learning environment and was determined to break out and be successful regardless of the opinions that my negative, limiting-belief teachers had about me.

Now, back to the rest of the book, here is what I found:

THUMBS UP:
1. Comprehensive information. You get a systematic approach, based on myriad areas of studies, to help you make your classroom rock.

2. The book is easy-to-follow and well-organized; information practical enough to be applied in a classroom setting.
The main crux addresses a three-core design for effective learning:
* Instructor factors
* Learner factors
* Context factors

3. Whether you are teaching personal development courses or professional development workshops, this book is for you since it stretches across a broad range of channels.

4. Rock solid research. Theory after theory, study after study, I'm quite sure Professor St. Clair had to give up many, if not all, extracurricular activities to write this impressive reference guide.
It is a remarkable accomplishment--even for someone in academia.

5. I paid special attention to the analogies since they are interesting and enhance the book as a whole and added some needed life into its pages (see #1 below under THUMBS DOWN).

THUMBS DOWN:
1. Again, the setback is the dry, textbook-like feel of this book. This is not the case in the entire book, but in the few sections that this problem arises, it does deter from the book's overall quality.

2. Typos. Gosh, the proof reader was not consistent in catching a few grammar gremlins.

THE NITTY-GRITTY:
If you are in the profession of teaching adults, you should know exactly where to find Creat-ing Courses for Adults: Design for Learning by Ralf St. Clair in your personal library, it's the best reference around. One caveat, though, you can plan, plan, plan, but in the final analysis, at least in my humble opinion, the best teaching environment happens organically and naturally so much so that you are watching the clock hoping it will slow down instead of speed up!

Contains useful schematics for developing both credit and non-credit courses

As a two-year college professor, I've been a fan of Jossey-Bass publications for years. They always put out thoughtful books that contain valuable information, and so I was eager to read this book to see if I could pick up some new ideas. Even though I'll be starting my twenty-second year of teaching this coming fall, I'm always on the lookout for new ideas to incorporate into my classes. I found this new book by Ralf St. Clair (which focuses on teaching both non-credit and credit courses) to be very useful.

As St. Clair states at the beginning of the Preface, "The big idea of this book is that education for adults has to be designed. Whether it's a one-hour class on wine tasting or a four-month language course, there are some key decisions that must be made as the course is crafted." To help achieve those goals, St. Clair breaks things into three core factors: matters that affect you as the educator, matters that affect your students, and matters that affect the course content itself. The central focus is on design since St. Clair believes that good course design helps create dynamic, engaged teachers and students.

To that end, St. Clair provides a Program Design Chart to help you build your course from the ground up, depending on your aims, methodologies, and values. He asks you to give careful attention to how each of these areas will impact your students.

Before purchasing this book, you'll also want to be open to using active learning, collaboration, and principles of student self-responsibility in your classes. I already use these methodologies when I teach, but I just wanted to point this out in case you don't.

St. Clair also uses nice analogies throughout the book, as well as good examples from the classroom. The book is also grounded in theory and research.

While a bit dry in places, this is overall a helpful book that asks the educator to reflect on her or his core beliefs and how she or he will bring those into each unique course.

About the Author

Giovanni Sartori holds the Albert Schweitzer Chair in the Humanities at Columbia University and is the author of numerous books, including Parties and Party Systems and, more recently, The Theory of Democracy Revisited, which have been translated and published in fifteen countries. As the English second edition of this work appears, Comparative Constitutional Engineering has also been published in Brazil, Chile, Japan, Italy, Mexico and Turkey

Lets face it, political institutions couldn't be more of a bore, but G. Sartori finds a way to turn all that around. With quick wit and little known facts, Sartori manages to create an easy read out of a seriously lacking subject.
