About the Author

Kathleen S. Verderber is an emerita Associate Professor of Management at Northern Kentucky University. She has been writing textbooks for over 40 years working for many years with her husband Rudolph F. Verderber and now with other coauthors. Dr. Verderber is at heart a teacher and enjoys the writing process seeing it as "teaching to a wider audience." In addition to writing, she has recently taken on the challenge of learning to play the harp. Dr. Verderber now lives in Naples, FL.

Erina L. MacGeorge is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at Pennsylvania State University. She teaches and conducts research in Interpersonal and Health Communication, with a focus on supportive communication. Dr. MacGeorge loves to help undergraduates understand communication theory and develop communication skills that are useful in their personal and professional relationships. Off campus, Dr. MacGeorge enjoys reading fantasy and science fiction, taking long walks, and any kind of outing with her family.

I learned of Amos Niven Wilder in a discussion of this book, first published by Harper and Row as "The Language of the Gospel: Early Christian Rhetoric" from Bob and Kelly Wilhelm who operate Storyfest. Harvard U. Press has reversed the original title and subtitle, but Wilder's message is unchanged: each person can "tell the story" of (Christian) experience without memorizing verses from scripture. Story and storytelling remain essential to humanity's collective spiritual progress. Go quickly and tell.

This book gave me a new direction!

I am very impressed with this book. I bought it and it changed the way I do business on EBay! Besides helping me tweak a few things on my listings, etc - it gave me a whole new focus and tons of ideas on where to get inventory!
I do have to say that this book is mainly for people that are already selling on EBay. A lot of the tips and tricks would not be helpful for total newbies.
I highly recommend this book! Also be sure to check out the author's website.
My only complaint about this book is that it didn't give more ideas for improving item descriptions for listings. Other than that - if you're already a seller on Ebay - this is a must!

Interesting read

This book is more a collection stories of duels through history. It has some illustration of various swords and pages with wood cut prints showing duels, armor, weapons etc... It really fills a niche in actual descriptions of combat (typically written in the 3rd person).

There are occasional references in other languages, such as French, which presents difficulty as I don't speak/read/write French. And there is a fair bit of old english writing. These are the only reason I didn't rate this book a 5.

If you are looking for a book with a focus on actual combat vice technique then this is probably what your are looking for.

About the Author

Susan R. Beauchamp spent 15 years as a news and public affairs journalist before embarking on a college teaching career. She has carved out a special place for herself at Bryant as a sought-after public speaking coach and teacher and as the founder of the University's annual Public Speaking Colloquium.

Stanley J. Baran is the founding and current Chair of the Department of Communication at Bryant University where his research and teaching specialty is communication theory. Robin Hard is the author of The Routledge Handbook of Greek Mythology (2003) and the translator and editor of Apollodorus' Library of Greek Mythology (1997) and Diogenes' Sayings and Anecdotes (2012) for Oxford World's Classics, as well as the translator of Marcus Aurelius' Meditations (OWC, 2011), with introduction and notes by Christopher Gill.

Superior to All other Translations Except the Loeb

I have never written a review for amazon but this book is exactly what I have wanted for many years.

There are so many good points that I will will just list them by number.
1. compact other translations are too large the size of the book is perfect to put in a bag or carry along easily when you go on the bus.
2. translation does not have typos - if you have read the English only translation based off of George Long's older one there are so many typos that it is annoying. But this book is proofread and very well done. Also because the other one is public domain you can get some really weird formatted books, but this book is well laid out and easy to read.
3. the translation it self is really good, but I like Oldfather's a little bit more, but that said since I can not read Greek it is nice just having an only English format like in this book.
4. great notes on each Discourse following AA Long nice book where he put many nice ideas about Epictetus's thinking in the translation of just the 1st book, this one follows the lead and there are many great additional notes nicely put at the end of the book instead of on the bottom.

So if you love Epictetus then you will probably love this book. I know I will recommend it highly to all of my friends.

Previous translations of Epictetus' Discourses and Enchiridion are stuffy and strange in parts. Robin Hard's translation manages to both preserve the original meanings as well as be very understandable for the contemporary reader.

Reading the Discourses, it's as if you are in Epictetus' philosophical school in Ancient Rome, learning to become a Stoic. If you are interested in Stoicism and potentially living as a Stoic, Epictetus' Discourses -- and this translation specifically -- is the place to get the juicy philosophical ideas in their full glory. Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, while wonderful, does not portray a complete philosophy but only the journal entries of a practitioner. Seneca's letters, while eloquent and wise, are a mix of Stoic and Epicurean thinking and thus sacrifice the purity of hard core Stoicism found in Epictetus.

I highly recommend reading this edition of the Discourses slowly, contemplating their meaning and how you might apply them into your daily life, then using the Handbook as it was intended: as a summary of the key points in the Discourses.

I think it's a great rundown of Stoicism

I read Oxford Press books whenever possible. I think, overall, they have the most accurate yet modern translations.

I suggest reading the "Handbook" portion of the book first, (it's located at the end). I think it's a great rundown of Stoicism. It gives mental exercises, and a kind of brief genealogical of stoic thought. The Discourse portion provides a deeper explanation in essay format.
