About the Author
Holly Bridges is a an award-winning journalist with 30 years experience as a radio and television reporter, anchor, talk show personality and award-winning writer. About the medical editor Dr. Sony S. Singh is a world-renowned gynecologist specializing in minimally invasive gynecology. He is the Director of Minimally Invasive Gynecology at the Shirley E. Greenberg Women’s Health Centre at The Ottawa Hospital, is an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The University of Ottawa. Dr. Singh is renowned for his surgical expertise in removing deep infiltrative endometriosis through minimally invasive means and is a leading expert in minimally invasive alternatives to hysterectomy, such as hysteroscopic and laparoscopic myomectomy and hysteroscopic endometrial ablation. A MUST Read for ALL Women!

I am a 47-year-old female going through menopause. I have been having problems with my menstrual cycle. I figured I was going through "the change." Periods scattered all over the place that last up to eight days. Every month I suffer from painful, extremely heavy periods with large clots. I wanted to see if this was "normal" so I picked up this book, The Unhysterectomy: Solving Your Painful, Heavy Bleeding Without Major Surgery.

At first I thought the book would be boring and filled with medical terms that I would not understand. I was pleasantly surprised that it immediately captured my attention! The author, Holly Bridges, writes so well you feel as if you are talking to her face to face. She uses humor, interesting words, writes in terms that women can understand and has extensively done her research. I like the fact that she states "every word in this book has been reviewed for accuracy by medical contributors" which include doctors, most specifically Sony S. Singh, MD, Ob-Gyn.

The author shares her interesting story and she does not give up. Other women share their personal stories as well. (You may see yourself in one or more of these stories.) She encourages women to get the help they need from physicians to help solve their female problems without drastic surgery.

I highly recommend The Unhysterectomy: Solving Your Painful, Heavy Bleeding Without Major Surgery to each and every woman. Empower yourself with the knowledge that surgery is not the last resort. In your lifetime if you do not experience these painful problems, you are sure to have a close person in your life that will need your help with regards to this subject. Terrible Title.. But READ ME..!

I'm so sorry for the title of this book. I had passed over it again and again because I knew I WANTED a hysterectomy. If it hadn't been for this book and the motivation it provided.. I would have lost my husband and a 3rd job due to "Flooding." Yes I know all types of people will read this review, men and women, and I honestly don't care. Flooding is flooding and if you don't know what I am talking about than this book isn't for you. Thank you Holly... you saved my life.

The title sounds like "Anti-Hysterectomy" but the book is nice and unbiased, and is for hysterectomies with a true medical need and a truly informed consent. Knowing what's going on for the treatment of heavy bleeding is helpful personally, but it's also an issue for every woman so we can organize solidarity as vulnerable patients in the medical arena or in any other setting. Thank you so much for writing this book!

Flawed

The library I work at has bought every installment in the "Cream" series. This fifth volume follows the same premise as the other books, but the execution of the book physically is so impractical! The pages are delicate loose leaf inside of a very flimsy paper folder. And there's a thin strip of information in a "half dust jacket" over the folder. I'm sure artistically the book works but physically it is a mess. Somewhere between artistry and bookbinding the design of this book took a turn for the worse. Maybe after I have sent this book off to the bindery and received it again, maybe then I can finally enjoy this book. Until then it sits on the shelf for books that need to be bound. It's ridiculous! Why should I have to pay for bindery fees just to enjoy a book??? And don't get me wrong, I understand books that were meant to be art and handled delicately and enjoyed for aesthetic value. But, even when I handled this book delicately, it started to fall apart in my hands. That's just lousy! What this book needs is: quality, sturdy paper, a strong, cardboard cover, and the information on the half dust jacket printed on the cover. What's really weird is the pages are printed and folded like a magazine!!! They should have published the book as a magazine if they wanted to go in that direction. But, again, bind it like a real book or a real magazine. Ugh!

Good contents, The Worst presentation.

I have my own copy, and about an hour after being received but carefully handled, it tore apart. Amazingly, the worst presentation I have ever seen for a book, even a magazine. Contents are good, good pictures, but come on... Think twice before purchase your own..

About the Author
Qin Xue Herzberg: Qin Xue Herzberg is a native speaker of Chinese and a graduate of Beijing Normal University in Chinese Language and Literature. For the past ten years she has been the upper-level Chinese language professor at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. For the past several decades she has taught Chinese to Americans of all ages.

Larry Herzberg: Larry Herzberg studied Chinese for five years at Vanderbilt University before doing his Master's and Ph.D. work in Chinese Language and Literature at Indiana University. In 1980 he founded the Chinese Language Program at Albion College and then did the same at Calvin College in 1984. For the past three decades he has taught the Chinese language at the college level.

Encourages you to think in Chinese

This book goes directly to the basic differences between Chinese and English grammar. Textbooks tend to favor Chinese sentences close to English grammar. Sentences like "Ta yangle haizi"/"He raised children." I take this example from a textbook I will not name since it is no worse than most. They mean to be helpful but they obscure the intriguing differences and they appeal to English-language intuitions. This book encourages you to think in Chinese.

It is all too natural for English speakers to read "Ta yangle haizi" as if the Chinese "yangle" is the past tense "raised." Textbooks rely on this to make students comfortable. But it is wrong. Verbs in Chinese do not have tenses, rather the sentences convey tense information. It is misleading to treat "yangle" as one word in the first place. Rather "yang le" is two words expressing "raise" and the idea of completing.

The Herzbergs explain this by clear examples of sentence tense and of different uses of "le." For example, "Ta chi le" can mean either "He just ate" or "He wants to eat." This is unnatural to English speakers since in English those are opposites. It is natural in Chinese because "he eat complete" can name either an existing state of affairs or a desired one, depending on context.

The particle "le" by itself has no natural meaning in English. It is natural Chinese.

This book gives numerous examples of patterns not natural in English which are natural in Chinese. The ease and clarity of presentation make these patterns natural to US students.

As other reviewers have said, the Herzbergs are one native speaker of Standard Chinese and one of English, both accomplished teachers of Chinese to American students. Their China Survival Guide: How To Avoid Travel Troubles and Mortifying Mishaps, Revised Edition shows their skill at describing and enjoying cultural differences. I bought this book because of that one.

For a quick start at learning Chinese-language grammatical intuitions, for English speakers, this is the book.

A Good Companion for Self-Study Programs

I have taken the slowest possible way to learning spoken and written Chinese language, i.e. the self-study approach. In doing this, I have needed the best possible tools to help me organize a program and to keep on track with a steady sense of progress. One of the tools that I have found most helpful is this short 120-page book written by a husband-and-wife team, Qin Xue Herzberg and Larry Herzberg, both of whom teach college level Chinese language courses at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

What does one want from a grammar book for self-study? For me, it's a combination of clarity and challenge. I want to be able to understand the principles that are being laid out without needing to enroll in a time-consuming and expensive course at the same time that I want to have the sense that nothing is being given to me in too simple a way. I want a challenge; I want to feel that I have to work for what I am getting. Not because I am a masochist, but because in my experience the effort reinforces the learning. I want to feel that I am confronting new but useful structures all the time, and I want as much Chinese language as possible included in the lessons so that I am not getting everything second hand through English instruction. In this way, I can work on important language structures and also pick up important vocabulary along the way.

The Herzbergs have produced just the right book for someone who is taking my approach. In thirteen compact chapters they lay out important principles relating to word order, parts of speech, special particles, special word choice issues, and even some letter-writing formalities (though I think one would be hard-pressed to find real letter writers anymore). Each chapter covers basic issues and refinements of those issues in ways that will produce not mere parrots of the usual textbook dialogues but sophisticated users of the language tuned in to the distinctions between the various shades of meaning of the word "can," for example, or between various words and structures for expressing the concept "to be."

The whole book is laid out clearly, is written in a plain and straight-forward style, and includes at times a sense of humor. The chapter covering the word "can," for instance, is sub-titled "A Huge Can of Worms." The lessons include correct Chinese structures and word choices, as one would expect, but the authors have also drawn on their combined teaching experience to provide us with what are probably the most common mistakes that English-language students make by trying to translate native expressions verbatim into Chinese. This is a valuable addition to the text because it helps one understand important differences in conceptual patterns between second-language learners and native speakers.

All-in-all this is a very useful book, whether you are learning on your own or in a classroom setting. I do wish the book might have a second part (keyed somehow to the first) that contained short readings (maybe a half-page in length) drawing on the patterns and vocabulary presented in the book. And it might be time to convert that last chapter on letter-writing into a chapter on emailing and blogging!

Since finishing my first year of Chinese, I have begun to wish that I could have the basic grammar patterns of Chinese written down for me, to help me apply my knowledge outside of the classroom. Sure, I can understand the patterns in class, but outside of class I am often lost. This book is an amazing learning tool to have. It's easy to follow along and it's incredibly helpful. About the Author

Mike Williamson did his PhD and subsequent research at the University of Cambridge before moving to the lab of Nobel Laureate Kurt W�thrich in Switzerland. There he worked on the first NMR structure of a globular protein. He is a professor of Biochemistry at the University of Sheffield.

Great textbook!

'How Proteins Work' by Mike Williamson is a great text. Its eleven chapters cover various aspects of protein structure and function. It should be applicable to advanced undergraduates, graduates, and academics. I particularly liked Professor Williamson's conversational, relaxed, and friendly writing style. He also takes care to explain in relatively simple terms with appropriate examples. This book deals with topics that other mainstream biochemistry textbooks ignore (e.g. entropy/enthalpy compensation). I found Chapters 1 on protein structure and evolution and Chapter 2 on protein domains particularly useful for my undergraduate students because they had sufficient detail, easy to follow, and interesting. Professor Williamson demonstrates an insight into 'how proteins work' that is obviously built from years of experience in teaching and research. I found this book fascinating and even simple things like the calculation of the number of protons in an E.coli cell (page 129) are a delight! Each chapter is well supplemented with good diagrams, images, and a list of cited references. Pedagogically the text uses extensive sub-headings for organisation, bold type for important terms, boxed text to distinguish more detailed explanations or interesting asides, quotations, wide margins with notes, nicely formatted tables, a list of references for further reading, referrals to relevant websites, and end of chapter problems. The book is colourful, well organised, and easy on the eyes. I like this text and have recommended it to the students in my course on structural bioinformatics. I still have a lot to read but I commend Professor Williamson for taking the time, and considerable effort, to write a great book!

Best book I've ever read on biochemistry and proteins. Don't expect it to be bogged down in the technical details, it sprints through the concepts and provides ample amounts of references for those who want more. Very well worded - some minor typos in this version - missing commas and letters - the concepts are concrete though.

A Must Read for Public Administrators!

This book is easy to read and is timely, relevant to the world climate change. However, some countries will be hit harder than others.This is an issue the world needs to be prepared for in governance and policy. More developed countries need to become aware, and be prepared for the imminent events to affect the most vulnerable, least developed countries. But global leaders also must be aware of the affects more developed countries also face. Public officials, administrators, and government leaders need to be aware of the events that are snowballing globally..

This book does great job with an enormous subject.

Just another book

There is nothing bad about this book, but there is also nothing particularly interesting.
I did not understand what the theme or conclusion of the book actually was. Well, there was no formal conclusion (chapter).
Also I do not know how the countries were picked, maybe I just overlooked it.
It is great not to generalize, however I wish the authors tried to find some bigger finding.
All in all the book is great for people who like descriptive political science and prefer modest claims.

USEFUL ANALYSIS OF CULTURE

Mr. Hall expounds a couple of key thesis. First, culture is not just the medium of communication. It is a method of communication all on its own. Second, if one "maps" cultural characteristics in ten "primary messaging systems", one can gain insight into the formal, informal, and technical aspects of that culture. Those ten primary messaging systems are: (1) Interaction, (2) association, (3) subsistence, (4) bisexuality, (5) territoriality, (6) temporality, (7) learning, (8) play, (9) defense, and (10) exploitation.

This book is indeed somewhat dated, but one can certainly see that the use of this monograph is that it provides a systematic way of analyzing culture. This can be useful when traveling or working abroad. Likewise, one could use these templates to improve ones understanding of his own culture. It is this latter purpose that makes this book relevant today.

The Silent Language is short enough to be easily read. However, for the sake of brevity, it sacrifices a more systemic or detailed analysis. As such, the author resorts to a limited amount of anecdotal information to support his framework. Anecdotal information is useful, but some more statistical analysis might be worthwhile. Indeed, one could argue that defining each primary messaging system as a collection of "sets", it would be possible to apply set theory from mathematics to anthropology.

While I have trouble believing that culture is a form of communication vice a medium of communication, I will probably use Mr. Hall's framework to analyze the "culture" each job and workplace that I deal with in the future. Likewise, I think anyone who works in management or leadership jobs would find this book useful.

An intriguing exploration of time from a cultural studies perspective

In this book, Hall explores the intricacies of time and space from a cultural studies perspective. Although this book is a bit dated, the information is still very relevant, and what Hell offers is an examination of how much our perception of time influences our cultural and everyday interactions. For example, learning just how tightly time is wound for Americans as opposed to other cultures is quite insightful to the workaholicism that pervades American culture. Hall touches on some aspects of space as well, though you'll find more of his thoughts on it, in the hidden dimension. What I most enjoyed about this book is an exploration of time from a social science perspective as opposed to a hard science perspective. I definitely recommend it to anyone interested in understanding concepts of space and time.
