not bad but could've been better
By A Customer
this book starts off a tad amateurish as Polan tries to tackle the film as a phenomenon first, and then analyze the actual film second. it seems that the author's initial take is that PULP FICTION is more pre-occupied with style over substance but as the film is analyzed in more detail argues that there is actual depth and substance to Tarantino's film!
this comes across as kind of awkward but Polan's writing style does improve the further along you read. i just wish that the author hadn't been so concerned with writing the first academic analysis of PULP FICTION and blasting the slew of sloppily written Tarantino biographies and websites, and focused more on the actual film.
i also question Polan's research notes. out of all the articles used/read there is one glaring omission: Gavin Smith's seminal article/interview with Tarantino about PULP FICTION in Film Comment around the time the film came out. Smith's article still remains, in my mind, THE best analysis of Tarantino's film. it's a shame the BFI didn't get him to write one of these books on PF.

Unworthy of its subject.
By Giuseppe C.
There's pulp fiction, then there's worse--namely, thin, obvious, breezy commentary that pretends to be scholarly, or at least "academic." This very slight volume wastes time talking about websites dedicated to the film, then attempts to argue that "Pulp Fiction" is strictly a "postmodern" event to be experienced rather than thought much about (the author's grand conclusion: it represents "style over substance"). I didn't even find the book of much use when I wanted some reminders of plot sequence and characters' names.
Perhaps I expected too much for my money as a result of reading this same series' "The Birds" by Camille Paglia (who obviously immersed herself in an exhaustive research of the filmmaking process as well as the final product). This edition, on the other hand, has the feel of something tossed out in a couple of week-ends.

Deconstructing Tarantino
By Michael Galasso
Dana Polan does an excellent job of breaking down the phenomenon of Pulp Fiction by examining it both textually and culturally, and in doing so, brings the runaway success of Pulp Fiction and the apparent "God-liness" of Tarantino back down to Earth. The book is a quick read, informative, stimulating, and fun. Having been ambivalent about this film since its release, Dana Polan hits the nail on the head about exactly why I both love and hate this film.
At any rate, if you are at all interested about Pulp Fiction (whether positively or negatively), I urge you to give this a read. And, the section on the cyber-world of Pulp Fiction is, at the very least, a humorous added bonus.

Beyond the Conscious Mind: Unlocking the Secrets of the Self, by Thomas R Blakeslee

A new understanding of consciousness that helps you to better understand your own and others behavior. Your mind is a self-organized team of specialized, independent centers of thinking. When we discuss our thoughts and actions in words, it is one of those centers, which we call the self, speaking. Yet most of our behavior is controlled by other specialized centers of thinking which prevail when the context requires their special abilities.
Unfortunately, the self tries to explain all of our behavior, even though it is simply rationalizing. Being word-oriented, it has no direct knowledge of the real reasons for our non-verbal behavior. Chemical signals do give the self vague clues, such as queasy or elated feelings, but the self is forced to fabricate, sometimes elaborate, explanations for our behavior and feelings. With practice, you can learn to see through these rationalizations and better understand your own and other's behavior.
Self-control is when the self actually takes control of behavior. Though useful for suppressing bad impulses, continual self-control is not a goal we should strive for. There are good reasons for the way our brain is organized as a consortium because logic and language are not always the best approach to everything. Intuition and "feel" are more effective for many tasks. Once you understand how the brain really works, you can work on developing mental habits that will increase your effectiveness by using minimal self-control and building a harmonious team of specialists in your head that know how to cooperate to get the job done.

From the Back Cover
The Nobel Prize-winning work of Roger Sperry revolutionized our understanding of human consciousness by proving that separate thinking and knowledge could exist in the left and right halves of the brain. Now, popular science writer Thomas Blakeslee - author of the highly acclaimed The Right Brain - takes us to a new level of understanding based on the theory of neural Darwinism by Gerald Edelman, another Nobel Prize winner. Blakeslee explains that our neurons spontaneously organize into hundreds of groups called modules that compete to respond to every situation in our lives - from reading this paragraph to falling in love. A vast preponderance of this activity operates outside of our conscious awareness. One of the most important, yet problematic of these modules is the one that rules our conscious thoughts - the self module. Planning, introspection, and interpreting behavior are among its chief specialties. However, just as a press secretary invents plausible explanations for a President's decision - without being privy to the real reasons - our self module often fabricates an explanation for our behavior when, in fact, it actually doesn't know our true motives. Since we accept its stories as true, it gives us a false sense of conscious control over all our actions and a distorted sense of reality. This distortion leads to many of the conflicts and misunderstandings that plague our relationships and work lives. Beyond the Conscious Mind helps each of us tap into and harness the natural creativity and talents of our whole mind. It is only by balancing our conscious mind with the wellspring of ideas in our unconscious that we can reach our full potential.|This book helps each of us tap into and harness the natural creativity and talents of our whole mind.

About the Author
Thomas R. Blakeslee's books have been published in nine languages. His best-sellers, Digital Design (Wiley, 1975) and The Right Brain (Doubleday, 1980) cross-fertilize here into an exciting new understanding of consciousness. Blakeslee has founded three companies and holds patents in such diverse fields as vehicle guidance, digital telephony, information display, photography, hydraulics, and electronic circuits. Enriching, Accessible and Thought-Provoking
By Peter A. Farrell
Our beliefs may be false (a revelation which had a profound impact on me) and the accuracy of our powers of introspection may be suspect, but our emotions are logical (!) and we can think and communicate non-verbally, not to mention the creative powers we have left untapped. I wish this had been the textbook for my high school psychology class.
Right from page 1 the author has his work cut out for him: explaining the self-organizing nature of the brain and what this means for our consciousness. Blakeslee does this brilliantly with numerous examples of self-organizing systems (like a beehive) that even a non-scientist can understand. Without getting bogged down in technical descriptions or getting lost down philosophical dead-ends, Blakeslee introduces us to our "self module", only one among many talents at our disposal. After describing what this language-bound module can do (and what it can't do, but other modules can), he masterfully applies this knowledge to our everyday lives: our emotions, education, beliefs, our children, sports, music, and creativity.
The book lives up to its name, because I have never read another book on consciousness which really introduces you to nonverbal thinking, a large and thought-provoking chapter in the book. From the famous Libet "consciousness time-lag" experiment, Blakeslee bravely follows the ramifications this presents for the self module, and reveals the equally disconcerting possibilities it holds beyond the conscious mind.

Could not put it down, great book.
By Schelst@aol.com
This book is probably one of the most interesting books I have read. It is easy to read and revolutionary at the same time. I stumbled across this book at the University of Arizona College Book Store. Otherwise, I would never have found it. I am completely baffled as to why this book is currently out of print. If you have any interest in psychology, this book is an absolutely must read! If you do not read this book, you are missing something very important.

Amazing, Revealing,
By A Customer
This is a book that gives the final picture after you have thought so much about this issue. And explains so much else with it. I have some questions also; In one of the chapters the author says that 98% of the time the self module is not "on". My questions are: What decides if one of the modules is "on" or "off"? Is it some kind of "marker" telling that either the self module is on or off? What if the self module is not "on", is it still "running somewhere else"? By the way; is the author planning a new book about the modules role in dreaming? Thanks

Potentially Life Changing
By Patricia Annalee Kirk
More philosophic than how-to,Up, Down, or Sideways refers to our personal economics. We will always be Up Down or Sideways and those conditions will change. If we are wealthy and well, plan for those conditions to change. Thankfully, joblessness and illness can change as well. So how can we live successfully amid life's uneven flow?

The author allows us to define our success--not always financial but often including the financial. He says success means different things to every reader. He contends that most of what happens to us is not in our control, but we can control our responses. He discusses optimism without denial and goes into the power of thinking positively without kidding ourselves.

I got into this book slowly, wondering where he was going with it, but that soon changed. I get most of my review books from Net Galley so I won't have to sort and discard later. Otherwise, books build into a paper mountain or lie sideways in the bookcase because they won't fit any longer. But I plan to buy this book and read a chapter each day until I "get" it. The "Ingredients of Love" section especially moved me and convicted me to look at my definition of caring and spotlighted the holes in it. He touches on gratitude as a mindset and persistence in getting where we want to go.

The author talks about faith, but he doesn't go into detail about his beliefs. The reader won't see CHRISTIAN in capital letters, but his words echo the lessons in the Bible. This book applies to anyone who wants a well-lived life. A potentially life-changing read.

This book will provide direction and inspiration during these unpredictable times.
By joel garfinkle
In today's economic climate of hardship, downsizing, unemployment and government bailouts, here comes this terrific book, based on sound principles, to help us thrive. This amazing resource could have not come at a better time for the working people of America! "Up, Down or Sideways" focuses on things we should do and keep doing to be successful. The principles and lessons, presented by Mark Sanborn, are easy to understand and very useful. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to successfully navigate through difficult, unpredictable times.

Facing Adversity with Success
By MamaMunky
Mark Sanborn's life had taken a turn for the worst. He wasn't getting as many speaking jobs, his investments were tanking, and then to top it off, he found out he had prostate cancer. An average man would have become depressed. Not Mr. Sanborn. He decided to use these events in his life to re-focus on what was important in his life. This led him to new insights into what was truly important. He realized that thought bad things were happening to him, there were many people who have it much worse.

Mr. Sanborn decided to share what he learned during those troubled times with the world. He teaches about "good-shoulds". This is the good advice that you receive from those around you. He shares how success does not equal your net worth. Success should be measured by health, meaningful work, relationships, service, learning, and faith.

This is a really good book on how to face adversity with a positive attitude. Mr. Sanborn is relateable, as is his tale and advice. I recommend this for people going through tough times or people who just want to read an interesting book on what people do when faced with those bad times.

I received this book for free from Tyndale Blog network. I was not required to give a positive review.

Amazon.com Review
"It has been said that jazz and the short story are the two American contributions to the world of art, and they do seem to have at least this one thing in common: both are engaged in by the practitioner primarily for the love of doing it," begins editor Donald E. Westlake in the introduction to The Best American Mystery Stories 2000. Over the last three years, this series has become an annually awaited delight in the October mystery lineup, with series editor Otto Penzler providing the backbeat and writers like Ed McBain, Sue Grafton, and Tony Hillerman providing the editorial riffs that make each volume unique. Here, Westlake has helped produce an appropriately dark collection with a few sardonic chops, like the late Shel Silverstein's "The Guilty Party" and Bentley Dadmun's "Annie's Dream."

The contributors are nicely balanced between big names like Jeffery Deaver and Dennis Lehane; short-story stalwarts like Barbara D'Amato, Tom Franklin, and Doug Allyn; and newcomers like Geary Danihy, whose first published story, "Jumping with Jim," adds a Conradian twist to the story mix. The nice thing about mystery short stories vis--vis novels is that they rarely sacrifice the elements of plot and motive to the whimsy of character development. These in particular use the classic themes well, from jealousy and revenge in Deaver's "Triangle" (where the murderer's identity is given a surprise fillip), D'Amato's "Motel 66," and Lehane's "Running Out of Dog," to professional rivalry in Edward Lee's "ICU" (the title of which is a very dark pun indeed), to sheer disgust in Allyn's graceful "Miracles! Happen!" and Robert Girardi's "The Defenestration of Aba Sid." If there is any weakness to the collection, it might be the preponderance of Southern and rural story settings, but that also helps give it the uniquely American flavor this series is known for. Think of it like a good Glenn Miller album: it may not push the envelope of the art, but it's got more than enough variety to keep any fan of American mystery entertained through more than one long autumn evening. --Barrie Trinkle

From Publishers Weekly
Guest editor Westlake has done an outstanding job selecting 20 stories published in 1999 for this stellar anthology, now in its fourth year, which should continue to garner big sales. In his introduction he wonders at the form's durability. The financial rewards are small, and these days short stories won't make a literary reputation. Why then do its practitioners persist? As with jazz, that other great American contribution to world art, they engage in it "primarily for the love of doing it," asserts Westlake. In contrast to the novel, where digressions and red herrings are the norm, unity of effect is all, as exemplified by the inventor of the detective story, Edgar Allan PoeAand by the contemporary writers represented in this volume. The names here range from the late Shel Silverstein, bestselling children's book author, whose rollicking tale, "The Guilty Party," stands as a fitting swan song for this versatile talent, to Thomas H. McNeely, whose quietly chilling psychological study, "Sheep," is his first published work of fiction. Robert Girardi's novella, "The Defenestration of Aba Sid," works both as a tale of comic absurdity and as an anti-Grisham lawyer story. In a foreword, series editor Otto Penzler comments on how mysteries have evolved in both style and content. Over the life of the genre, stories have become more complex, more textured. When Penzler says "be prepared for the unexpected, and be ready for some of the best prose being written today," he's not overstating the case. This title will enjoy brisk library sales but is also poised to benefit from the continued general-reader interest in matters mysterious. (Oct.)

From Booklist
Twenty stories by American and Canadian mystery writers, culled from more than 1,100 entries, make up the fourth entry in this series. Except for the late Shel Silverstein, who submitted the wickedly clever "The Guilty Party" for this edition, many of the writers are little or moderately well known, probably giving more credibility to the selection process. Series editor Penzler provides a foreword that traces the evolution of the mystery story from puzzles to private eye stories to the current emphasis on stories of character. Mystery Writers of America Grand Master Donald Westlake's introduction does more fine riffs on the similarities between jazz and the mystery short story. A worthwhile assemblage of contemporary crime fiction. "Contributor's Notes" at the end give bios and authors' takes on writing mysteries. Connie Fletcher

Lives Up to the Title
By Brian D. Rubendall
"Best American Mystery Stories 2000" lives up to its title. It is a varied collection of (mostly) fine mystery and crime stories, many by up and coming authors. I'll confess that two or three of them didn't work for me, but that's a very small number in a book than contains 20 stories and nearly 480 pages of text. My two favorites were by two of the few old names in the collection. Dennis Lehane spins an excellent down south slice of life tale in "Running Out of Dog," while longtime television writer and children's author, the late Shel Silverstein, chimes in with the light-in-tone but still serious courtroom story "The Guilty Party." Doug Allyn contributes a fine private eye tale with "Miracles! Happen!" while Barbara D'Amato spins an on-the-road yarn with a twist in "Motel 66." Also first rate are Tom Franklin's "Grit," and the down and dirty gangster in the hospital tale "ICU."
Basically, there's a mystery story here for just about every type of mystery fan, from hard-boiled detective tales, to crime stories, to amature sleuths to compelling whodunnits? Modern short stories do not get nearly the audience they should, and this is a book that deserves to be read.
(Note: The 2000 "Best Mystery Stories" collection is far superior to the 2001 anthology, mostly because it has a better variety of stories).

I was surprised how good this was
By adead_poet@hotmail.com
I'm not the biggest fan of mystery stories, so I was unsure of how much I would like this collection. I was surprised at how much I liked it. There were a few that I didn't like that much, but most of them were good stories and most were well written. They ranged from ok to good, better, and on up to great stories like Shel Silverstein's story, Edward Lee's twisted story "ICU", and what i think was the best, Robert Girardi's "The Defenestration of Aba Sid", which is his 'anti-Grisham' story. A great deal of the selections here come from books and there is no surprise that both Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine and Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine both had three stories in here (the most from any one place). I suppose it's because there aren't many genre magazines anymore, but a few of these stories first appeared in literary magazines. The book is a little longer (around 480 pages) than those in The Best American Short Story series, but mystery stories need a little time to unfold. It's a good selection for the mystery reader (no matter which 'type' of mystery story you like) and for those of us who don't normally read the genre.

Review
The futurologists of the world have gathered at their Eighth World Congress at the Costa Rica Hilton to discuss the problem of overpopulation. Their deliberations, however, are interrupted by a revolution which the government attempts to quell with chemical weapons. The air and water are laden with "benignimizers" and other exotic drags which send futurologist Tichy careening into a hallucinatory tomorrow. Lem's view of the overcrowded future is original and disturbing. A pessimistic, mordantly funny book, well translated from the Polish by Michael Kandel. (Kirkus Reviews )

About the Author

Quite a trip... Stick with it to the end.
By T. Nelson
As a preface, I started "The Futurological Congress" not knowing what to expect. Although I am a fan of science fiction, I had not read any of Lem's other works before.

As most books from this genre do, "The Futurological Congress" hurls you into a bizarre world from page 1. The story, based in Costa Rica at a conference of futurologists, takes the reader through many hallucinogen-fueled narratives. At many times, it was difficult to understand what was reality and what was a product of the LTN (love-thy-neighbor) chemicals in the air; this, however, is one of the most fascinating aspects of the tale.

Lem does a great job creating a world very different from our own but grounded in concepts we all understand. He also, quite successfully, fosters a sense of uncertainty in the reader; this uncertainly mirrors that experienced by the narrator and welcomes the reader to guess at what might happen later in the story.

I will not give any of the story away, but I would advise you to stick with this book through the end. At the onset, I was confused about what was happening and how the story would come together; I was not drawn to the writing style (the English translation is good but not perfect), but by the end, I couldn't put it down.

This is a great exploration of human character and a riveting read. However, if you are not familiar with Lem's works, I might suggest starting with "Solaris" so you get a good introduction to his style. I would definitely recommend "The Futurological Congress" if you're interested in a quirky, dynamic science fiction read.

But half way into the book it went down like a roller coaster making you cling to the story
By tnpurdon
For the simple minded one. I will be honest. At first I was confused on what the heck was going on. It started very slow for me and the words were a bit to wordy. But half way into the book it went down like a roller coaster making you cling to the story. What a ride and how insane and scary it is to what we might become as in the future. I only picked up this book do the comment that was made about the movie called The Congress. It takes Metrix and The Congress to a whole another level. It's beautifully well written and man it's scary. Just scary in the essence of how remarkably close it's coming to our future.

Paroxysms of laughter, pure fun!
By Kathy
I must say I warily downloaded this book and put off reading it for some time. I thought it could be as bleak as the recent Russian sci-fi translation I read. I guess I didn't read the reviews carefully enough. This was one of the funniest books I ever read. Lem is brilliant, with such a sense of humor. There were parts where I had to close my Kindle, while I tried to get the guffaws under control. Luckily I was reading in bed and only my hubbie could see me.

While Lem is wonderfully creative and you could tell he had a great time penning this story, I was also blown away by the translator. This novel is so much about word play, and you could not tell it was written in a foreign language. It was impecably translated and didn't suffer a bit. I can't wait to try more of Lem's books. While very funny and short, there was also a scary message here.

Even if you are not a sci-fi fan, you are in for a treat with this book. It would take anyone out of a reading slump or maybe even a deep depression. Get it and enjoy, now!

How Should We Then Live (Study Guide), by Francis A. Schaeffer

As one of the foremost evangelical thinkers of the twentieth century, Francis Schaeffer long pondered the fate of declining Western culture. In this brilliant book he analyzed the reasons for modern society’s state of affairs and presented the only viable alternative: living by the Christian ethic, acceptance of God’s revelation, and total affirmation of the Bible’s morals, values, and meaning. How Should We Then Live? has become the benchmark for Christian worldview thinking today. This edition commemorates the 50th anniversary of L’Abri Fellowship, founded by Francis and Edith Schaeffer.

Review

"This is a modern-day classic, one of Schaeffer's books that awakened me to how biblical truth affects all of life."
—Charles Colson, founder, Prison Fellowship and the Colson Center for Christian Worldview

"There are books that quickly go out of print and there are books for the ages. How Should We Then Live? is one for the ages. Any serious thinker must read it again and again."
—Cal Thomas, Syndicated Columnist, Host, After Hours, Fox News Channel

"How Should We Then Live? was produced by a genius who cared about the battle of ideas. It's also the book I still recommend to students for a quick overview of 'the rise and decline of western thought and culture.' Schaeffer brilliantly takes readers from ancient times through the Renaissance, Reformation, and Enlightenment, then discusses the breakdown in philosophy and science and moves on to art, music, literature, film, and much else besides."
—Marvin Olasky, Editor in Chief, World News Group

"Go to any evangelical Christian gathering ... and ask twenty people the simple question: 'What single person has most affected your thinking and your worldview?' If Francis Schaeffer doesn't lead the list of answers, and probably by a significant margin, I'd ask for a recount."
—Joel Belz, Founder, Worldmagazine

Still an Important Work 25 years Later
By A. Wolverton
In "How Should We Then Live," Francis Schaeffer seeks to give an analysis of the events of history and how they have shaped our present cultural philosophies, thoughts, ideas, and beliefs. Schaeffer begins with the culture of Ancient Rome and leads us all the way through to (written in 1976) the present. How has our current way of thinking developed? Through philosophy? The arts? Science? Religion? The answer is through all of them, and Schaeffer shows how a Christian worldview (or a lack of one) did and continues to affect people and nations. According to Schaeffer, modern man really only cares about two things: personal peace and prosperity...at any cost. How we have arrived here is a very interesting story...
Schaeffer himself admits in the introduction that a comprehensive study of the rise and fall of Western thought and culture would be a near impossibility. He's right. But many times in the book I think he fell short. Schaeffer tends to explain concepts during certain periods in history very clearly, then assumes that the reader is familiar with other periods without the same foundation being laid. Again, as he said, the problem is he can't treat the subject comprehensively in only 258 pages (many of which are photographs). I also felt that Schaeffer was somewhat uncomfortable in knowing how to fit musical influences into the book. His musical statements don't seem to support some of his ideas very well at times. (However, he handles the influence of art quite well.) Also, as with any book examining culture that is 25 years old, much of the material is outdated. It's a shame that Schaeffer didn't live to see and comment on some of the events of the past decade. It would have been very interesting to hear him speak of things (such as cloning) which are now very real.
I have read four previous Schaeffer works. None of the books I have read are very long (well under 300 pages), but some can be a pretty rough road. "How Should We Then Live" is very readable and most of the time very clear. The book is well worth your time.

Good idea, flawed execution
By Jordan M. Poss
In reading How Should We Then Live, I found that Francis Schaeffer reminded me a great deal of another famous Christian writer, John Foxe. Like Foxe, Schaeffer's writing--specifically, his accuracy in assessing and describing art and culture--improve the closer he comes to his own era. I had never read anything by Schaeffer before but had always heard him highly spoken of, so when I came across this book recently I bought it on impulse. It was a fascinating, brisk read that I completed in two days.

What Schaeffer sets out to do is follow the development of the Western philosophy of life from the decadence of Rome to the decadence of the modern world and explain what has gone wrong with our society. He also seeks to describe how a proper worldview balances the universal with the particulars and how most modern philosophies overstress one or the other to a fault.

Schaeffer's flaws are not many, but they are often great. He begins the book with a brief explanation of presuppositions--unfortunately, many of his own presuppositions give an otherwise welcome brief history a bad flavor.

Starting with his presupposition--pointed out ad infinitum by other reviewers--that all pre-Reformation Christianity is unquestionably bad, he grossly misinterprets the works of St. Thomas Aquinas, Dante, and Michelangelo, to name only a few. His view of Greco-Roman culture is also oversimplified. Ironically, for someone so keen on balancing the universals and the particulars, he is often only generally accurate in the broad strokes and does poorly on the particulars.

I've dwelt on the flaws, but this is still a good book. Just read it knowing that much of the early material is either oversimplified or misinterpreted. Once Schaeffer reaches Nietzsche, he is within his depth and gives a good, if too brief and simplified, overview of the major philosophical movements that shaped the 20th--and now 21st--century.

How Should We Then Live? is an ambitiously conceived book--its problems lie with the author's presuppositions and, to an extent, its brevity. If you're looking for a book with similar themes and goals, I'd recommend John Blanchard's Does God Believe in Atheists? instead. Blanchard's work is much more detailed and exhaustive, and far more balanced in its treatment of viewpoints that don't square 100% with his own.

Recommended.

Should be required reading for every educated person
By captiii
I needed this book for a graduate course. It was well worth it and will become a part of my permanent library.

The focus of Schaefer (2005) is “the rise and decline of western thought and culture”
(Schaeffer, 2005). Using examples starting with ancient Rome Schaeffer brings the reader
through 2000 years of the history of western civilization influenced by Christianity. Some of the
influences have been positive and some negative. Looking at the current situation what is
needed in society is a dose of the truth. A good dose of the truth can help bring about a world
view that can help bring some sanity back to western civilization. Without truth there may
indeed be a complete collapse of the civilization for which we are a part.

The purpose of the text is to examine “the rise and fall of western thought and culture”
(Schaeffer, 2005). Schaffer (2005) states in the last sentence of the book that,
this book is written in the hope that this generation may turn from that great wickedness,
the placing of any created thing in place of the Creator, and that this generation may get
its feet out of the paths of death and may live. (p. 258).

The intended audience is quite broad. Although there is a distinct Christian perspective
the book is written to the general population with an overview of how western civilization has
arrived where it is today and the implications of its current state. It is also directed towards
Christians because there is a special note at the end of the book directed specifically at Christians
and what the presentation of the information should mean to them.

The thesis of the book is to use the evolution of western culture, philosophy, knowledge
and thought to “present the flow and development which have led to twentieth century thinking
and by so doing hope to show essential answers” (Schaeffer, 2005). This is accomplished by
starting with what has been considered the origin of the western world, ancient Rome.
The book is definitely not a study on the global evolution of philosophical and cultural change. It focuses on the western world that has its roots in the Roman Empire. This is the part of the world that
has been the most impacted by Christian thought throughout the centuries more than any other
part of the world. The bias found within the book is found in Proverbs 1:7 “the fear of the Lord
is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline” (New International
Version (NIV)). Another bias also found in Proverbs 13:20 “there is a way that seems right to a
man, but in the end it leads to death” (NIV). These versus taken from the Bible are sound
description of the basis found in the book. The bias is the truth of God.

The theoretical assumptions made are directly related to how Christianity has impacted
western civilization for the past two thousand years. The assumption is that Christianity has
played a very large part in the manner in which culture, art, math, science philosophy social
contract theory and social moral norms have evolved. It has been the organized church that has
either facilitated or put up barriers to change. Another assumption is that although there should
only be one truth there are in fact two or more truths that the culture is trying to embrace
manage. The spiritual aspects of Christianity and the secular aspects of the culture within a
community have over time continued to drift apart. Schaeffer explains this as a dichotomy of
“two reciprocally exclusive orders” (Schaeffer, 2005, p. 164). He describes this dichotomy as
the description of modern man and this becomes the basis for many of the issues that are
discussed in the book. Modern man has created a “total separation between the area of meaning
and values, and the area of reason” (Schaeffer, 2005). This separation has become the dilemma
that modern man has tried to resolve. However there is one ingredient missing from attempt.
Proverbs 1:7 clearly states “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise
wisdom and discipline” (New International Version (NIV)). Basically modern man has become
a fool because of the attempt to rationalize the split between values and reason. Without the
source of truth this cannot be rationalized by modern man.

Schaeffer (2005) uses as an example of the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. Nietzsche
“was the first one who said in the modern way that God is dead, and he understood well where
people end when they say this” (Schaeffer, 2005). Later in life Nietzsche went insane as
Schaeffer (2005) explains “because he understood that insanity was the only philosophic answer
if the infinite-personal God does not exist” (p. 180). If society adopts the reasoning that God is
dead then meaning and values have no basis nor does reasoning. In the end, it is all disaster.

The modern view of thought has become the accepted viewpoint by popular consensus
(Schaeffer, 2005, p. 205). As long as people seek personal peace and affluence they will believe
they have been successful. The current thought that permeates society is that it is all about the
individual to the detriment of the generation that is following. Alongside that, is the affluence
mentality that measures success by what I have accumulated in the material world. The book
discusses current issues in light of modern thought and these are discussed along with each
historical context. These issues include an explanation of how arbitrary judicial decisions have a
major negative impact on the health of society. In addition to judicial arbitrary decisions, mob
rule or law by consensus has become the norm. There is no basis for reasoning and therefore
whatever a person wants to do they can make the case that it should be acceptable. As it says in
Romans 1:28 “furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of
God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done” (NIV). Schaeffer
(2005) makes the case for this biblical truth in his discussion of historical and current events.

This book is valuable in the study of school law and ethics in that it provides the
documented basis for how society has evolved to arrive at this point in history. Understanding
history and how historical events have impacted society allows a contextual view for why the
societal norms experienced today and why they exist as they do. Jesus told his disciples in
Matthew 10:16 “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as
snakes and as innocent as doves” (New International Version). It is this admonition by Jesus that
gives a context from which to view the value of this particular book. The better the Christian
understands the basis for societal norms, including ethics and laws, the better they can be a
catalyst for change to help bring light to the truth. Schaeffer (2005) provides the knowledge and
context required to understand the continuing influx of laws that are not based on any rational
reasoning.

It is the manner in which Schaeffer makes his presentation that has the greatest impact and provides the foundation and evidence for a thought that was already held. Overall this book describes exactly how we should live if we intend to have an
impact on improving the current decline in western thought and culture. “The problem is having
and acting upon the right world view - the world view which gives men and women the truth of
what is” (Schaeffer, 2005, p.254).

Written for the layperson but extensively annotated for the experienced lawyer, this book provides clear guidance through the rapidly developing law of electronic commerce. Issues covered in detail include (but are by no means limited to):

  • What rules govern online advertising?
  • What are the legal issues involved in setting up a Web site?
  • How do you create and enforce online contracts?
  • How can you use digital signatures to facilitate electronic commerce?
  • Who owns the rights to online information?
  • When can you "borrow" online materials from others?
  • What are the rules for using sexually explicit materials on the Net?
  • What constitutes illegal conduct online?
  • Can employers legally read their employees' e-mail?
Written by attorneys from the Information Technology Law Department at McBride Baker & Coles, sponsored by the Software Publishers Association, and Highly Recommended by Amazon.com Books.

From Library Journal
Very much a book on Internet law, this thorough resource provides access to over 500 pages of complex legal material. It offers intriguing chapters on jurisdiction and taxation of online commerce, and the section on a signed writing and the statute of frauds is written from a telecommunications perspective. Annotated endnotes are done in legal citation. The only drawback is the insertion of sometimes confusing cross references. A member (like his contributors) of McBride Baker & Coles, a Chicago law firm, editor Smedinghoff has written extensively on the legal aspects of software. His book is more accessible and readable than Edward A. Cavazos and Gavin Morin's Cyberspace and the Law (MIT, 1994) and is a sure companion for any computer law course. Recommended for all libraries and essential for law libraries.?Alan Schroeder, Chapman Univ. Sch. of Law, Huntington Beach, Cal.

Out of Date; 1996 publication, not 2007
By Ray Campbell
Amazon persists in showing this as a 2007 publication. It is not. It was written and last revised in 1996. It was, I expect, an excellent book in its time, but a lot has happened in internet law since 1996, and this book should not still be available for sale new.
