Irish troops have served 40,000 individual tours of duty over four decades in Lebanon. Author Tom Clonan writes with vivid accuracy as a former Irish Army Officer (1989 to 2000) who helped expose bullying and sexual harassment within the army. As informed and informative as it is thoughtful and thought-provoking, Blood, Sweat and Tears: An Irish Soldier's Story of Love and Loss is an impressively written and detailed account that is very strongly recommended as an addition to community and academic library 20th Century Irish Military History and 20th Century Middle East Studies reference collections and supplemental reading lists.
About the Author
Dr. TOM CLONAN is the Irish Times Security Analyst. He lectures in the School of Media, Dublin Institute of Technology – Ireland’s oldest Journalism school. He lives in Dublin and has four children. He served as an officer in the Irish Army from 1989 and has direct experience of the conflicts in Ireland, Lebanon and the former Yugoslavia. As Irish Times Security Analyst, Clonan has had exclusive access to all aspects of the Global War on Terror including experiences in Iraq, Syria, continental Europe and Guantanamo Bay. He also provides expert military and security analysis to Irish national television and radio, and international broadcasters including the BBC and Sky News.

Honest, emotional account of a UN Soldiers Tour in South Lebanon

This is actually the first e-book I have bought. Saw the title advertised around Christmas and as I had also served with an IrishBatt in South Lebanon, I had to purchase! I read this in two nights, as I couldn't leave it down. Perhaps this is a biased review, but it brought back many memories from my time there - 25 years ago in fact!
The book is easy to read and full of emotion. The author describes in great detail, life during his tour of Lebanon as a young officer. He gives real-life examples of daily military routines, the humour, fear, loneliness and sadness, that he and many others experienced. At times I bellowed out loud in laughter, as the author described the black humour that in the military, comes in good times or bad, but which often seems the only way to cope in many situations.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in military history of the UN operation in South Lebanon and in particular, anyone who has served there.

Highlights the Challenges, humour and horror of UN Peacekeeping duties

Certainly highlights the personal challenges of being a member Army in the UN Peace Keeping Force in the Lebanon, Very different from any negative or rather non-informed, perceptions that may exists about the role of Irish Defence Forces and their importance on an International stage. This is a very well written personal and 'balanced' account of a peacekeeper. It is populated with both great tales of humour and tragedy - typical of any excellent Irish story telling. It showcases Ireland's world leading ability to slag one another - with even the darkest of humour. I would reccomend this book highly

Very good read

Think MASH, without the medical side, transposed to Lebanon with an Irish cast. All the tragedy, illogicality and black humour of warfare is here.
You get a good insight into the peacekeeping operation - something that isn't as attention- (or headline-) grabbing as offensive military operations, but almost as dangerous.
Clonan writes this very well, always with an eye to the absurd, and the personalities involved. Highly recommended.
