I write this review from probably a different perspective than the average buyer. After over 9 years of running a successful cake business out of my home, I began to put together an outline for writing my own book on the subject. Part of my research involved purchasing other books on the subject to see what is currently being offered and what I could do to stand out. Among those I have read are "Start & Run a Home-Based Food Business" by Mimi Shotland Fix, "How to Start a Home-Based Bakery Business" by Detra Denay Davis, and "Start a Cake Business Today" by Paula Spencer. I have also done extensive online research, as there is now a wealth of free information on this subject on the web.
When I reached Chapter 2 of Alison McNicol's book, the chapter on state-by-state legalities, something prickled in the back of my mind. "I've read this before," I thought. A quick google search of some of the sentences led me to the Home Based Baking web site, which has whole sections devoted to the home baking laws in each state. Entire passages of McNicol's Chapter 2 were lifted word-for-word from this site.
It happened again when I reached Chapter 4, the chapter on how to price your cakes. The writing and structure were immediately recognizable as an article on the Cake Boss software web site. It's one of the first results you get if you google "how to price my cakes".
This review is not a review on the merits of the book, which are hard to judge since the author herself appears to be a sewer/crafter with dubious to nonexistent credentials in the cake industry. I just don't feel it's right for someone to copy free information off the web and charge money for it. Additionally, some of the advice is simplistic verging on cloying. She advises "STOP the Procrastination... I don't know about you, but I can quite happily while away hours, days, weeks, or even months daydreaming. In fact, I'm so full of wonderful ideas, I reckon I could quite easily make a full time career out of visualizing and imagining all the wonderful things I could/would do... if only I had the time/tools/money/support etc!" Although if that's the kind of business advice you need, maybe this book is for you.
My advice is: if you can't find the information you want free on the web or a cake discussion forum, buy any of the other books I listed at the beginning of the review. But don't pay for information that's out there for free.

Excellent resource

Just ordered this book for my wife as she has been thinking about starting a home cake decorating business for some time but couldn't quite figure out what to do first. This book is an excellent resource - it not only covers all the official and business stuff she needs to consider, but it also made her really think about what she was capable of, what she wanted from running a business and how to make the business fit in with family life etc. There were lots of fantastic resources - Templates for Terms & Conditions, Contracts, Invoices etc plus detailed information on all the state and food laws she needs to consider and look into, and tons of other really useful information. Definitely a 5***** from us. Now I'm looking forward to the extra cash she'll soon be bringing home !!
