Patton's Pawns: The 94th US Infantry Division at the Siegfried Line, by Tony Le Tissier

The 94th US Infantry Division was an organization formed late in the Second World War, made up largely of draft-deferred university students as enlisted men and an officer corps pulled together from various domestic postings with unfortunate consequences for mutual trust and respect.

Initially used as part of the force blockading the Brittany ports after D-Day, in December of 1944, the division was incorporated into General Patton’s Third Army south of the Moselle-Saar Triangle, the base of which was a portion of the Siegfried Line known as the Orscholz Switch. Its first combat experience came in battalion-sized attacks during that terrible winter while the Battle of the Bulge raged to the north, and the Division suffered heavy casualties, many due to the ferocity of the winter weather. Patton, with characteristic zeal, excoriated the division’s officers and senior NCOs for the rate of non-combat casualties. Thereafter, the division was ordered forward on an all-out assault to break through the Siegfried Line. After horrific fighting against entrenched defenders, with ice turning to mud as spring approached, on February 19, 1945, the 94th broke through to open the roads to Trier and the Rhine.

This book is the most comprehensive study to date of the fierce fighting between the 94th U.S. Infantry Division and their German counterparts during that spring of 1945. It sheds new light on the achievements of the outnumbered division in penetrating Germany’s Westwall. With characteristic verve and detail, Tony Le Tissier narrates the action and illuminates the tribulations and sacrifices of American soldiers who won their laurels at great cost.

Review
“[Patton’s Pawns] draws some long-overdue attention to the considerable fighting prowess of the 94th. Second, it makes the salient point that the 1945 campaign to conquer Nazi Germany was no walkover. Instead, it was a bloody, costly, demoralizing struggle. By and large, the Germans did not capitulate. They fought very hard, and Le Tissier illustrates this quite well.”—Journal of Military History

"This new and exceedingly detailed divisional history . . . is a well-written narrative with excellent, appropriate maps, drawings, and photographs."— Russel A. Hart, author of Clash of Arms: How the Allies Won in Normandy

“Le Tissier does a great job building an immediate bond between these hard-fighting soldiers of the 94th and the reader. . . . Adding to his superior writing are fantastic maps, sketches, and photos interspaced through the book. . . . Patton’s Pawns is a worthy read of any military historian or for those interested in following one of the many infantry divisions fighting across Europe during World War II.”—On Point

The Advance of the 94th Division to the Rhine
By Dave Schranck
I always considered Tony Le Tissier a Berlin specialist. When it was discovered he wrote a book on the newly formed US 94th ID, under General Malony, fighting in the southwest corner of Germany, was I surprised and also delighted. His books on Berlin, Halbe, the Oder have been favorites of mine.
The author introduces the 94th, telling their brief history and how they started their tour in Brittany, France as a blocking formation against the ports still held by the Germans. It wasn't long before Patton moved them to the Moselle-Saar triangle to relieve 90th ID. The rest of the book describes the battle action this outfit had as it fought its way from the Moselle at Orscholz Switch to the muliple crossings of the Saar River and then to the Rhine. The timeframe for this coverage is mid January to the first week of March 1945. Patton was unduly pressing the 94th ID and the 8th AD to be the first to cross the Rhine. He wanted to beat Patch's 7th Army and Montgomery's 2nd Army over the Rhine. Hodges 1st Army just beat him with a little luck at Remagen.
Some of the engagements the 94th had include: Tettinger-Butzdorf, Nennig, Sinz, Orscholz, Schloss Bubingen, Campholz Woods, Trier, Ayl Crossing, Ockfen, Serrig, Dreikopf Hill among others.
The author gives a daily account of the action this division was in; much of it was in company or battalion size fights. A lot of it occurred at the multiple bridgeheads over the Saar. If you have read "Zhukov at the Oder", you will be familiar with the author's style. There is good tactical description of the engagements along with a scattering of personal observations and anecdotal experiences.
There are 26 maps that will help you follow the action. The maps are pretty good but I had to use a magnifying glass to study them. There are also a small group of photos. There is an Appendix, an extensive Notes section, a Bibliography and a Index. I really enjoyed this book; there is a lot of action in an area that wasn't well known to me. The book is definitely worth a read.

In-depth historical chronicle
By Midwest Book Review
Retired British lieutenant colonel Tony Le Tissier presents Patton's Pawns: The 94th US Infantry Division at the Siegfried Line, a close-up examination of an infantry division created late in World War II, primarily of draft-deferred university students and officer corps assembled from various domestic postings. Chapters recount how the division was incorporated into General Patton's Third Army south of the Moselle-Saar Triangle, its first combat experience during the Battle of the Bulge which entailed heavy casualties from the fierce winter weather as well as the fighting, and its application in an all-out assault to break through the Siegfried Line against entrenched defenders. A handful of black-and-white photographs and maps, as well as notes, a bibliography, and an index round out this in-depth historical chronicle of this outnumbered division and the tremendous sacrifice it paid. Highly recommended.

The Orscholz Debacle
By A. C. Harrison
Mr. Tessier quotes details from my description of the ill-fated attempt to capture Orscholz, Germany in my memoir UNSUNG VALOR: A GI'S STORY OF WORLD WAR II. On January 20, 1945, my outfit, Company B, 301st Infantry Regiment of 94th Infantry Division was stopped by German soldiers of the 11th Panzer when we attacked the town in the early morning. Part of the company that I was part of was pinned down in a field outside the town for twelve hours, lying in deep snow under constant fire from riflemen, machine gunners, and artillery, with Germans to our front and a mine field to our rear. By the end of the day, many men in Companies A and B had been killed and wounded. Only after dark were fifteen of us, under the guidance of one of our own, able to creep through a mine field and escape. But in the process, I stepped on a mine and was wounded seriously in both legs and the left wrist, barely able to walk and bleeding profusely. For the next six hours, my companions helped me through snow drifts that sometimes reached up to our hips as we sought to find our lines.

Fortunately, we escaped, but the rest of the company who had come nearer to the town of Orscholz were under attack for another whole day, and those who did not die from wounds and the cold were captured and remained in German POW camps until the end of the war. I lived to tell of our division's service at Lorient and St. Nazaire, France, before my small part in Company B's attack at Orscholz.

Mr. Tessier tells the whole story of our entire division throughout the battle for Europe, and he does it well, presenting an outsider's unbiased story of the 94th in Europe. I am grateful for him to have included my experience in his book.
